875: Prying open Bertha's mouth (Part 1)

When Sheriff Mode arrived at the back of Bertha's house, he could already vaguely hear Bertha yelling at Corey in the front yard.

Taking advantage of this moment, Sheriff Mode directly entered the house through the back door.

If this woman, Bertha, had lied when he questioned her yesterday, then there was no point in trying to get information from her.

Entering the house, Sheriff Mode paused for a moment before walking towards the woman's room.

Having observed the layout of Bertha's house the day before, Sheriff Mode was quite familiar with the distribution of the rooms inside.

After a few breaths, he arrived at this woman's bedroom.

The layout of the room was the same as yesterday, without any special features or changes.

However, after Sheriff Mode arrived here, his gaze was fixed on one particular area!

That was Bertha's bed.

Normally, looking at it, there was nothing particularly special about it.

But at this moment, with the help of the System's new function, Sheriff Mode clearly saw that this bed was emitting bursts of dark black color!

He strode forward.

He lifted the quilt with one hand.

What Sheriff Mode saw was an ordinary bed board.

However, with the System's prompt, he could see that inside this bed board, a dark black luster was constantly flowing!

Hooking his fingers onto the bed board, Sheriff Mode gritted his teeth and pulled hard!

"Crack, crack~"

As the wooden board splintered, a small hidden compartment beneath the bed board was also revealed!

And in this hidden compartment, a small pile of banknotes was placed!

"What are you doing?!"

Suddenly, standing at the doorway behind Sheriff Mode was a disbelieving Betty.

"Captain, you..." Corey, who had followed, also didn't understand the situation for a moment.

Just now, Corey was outside trying his best to calm Bertha's anger and attempting to talk calmly.

A clear sound came from inside the house.

Bertha heard the sound and immediately ran back into the house as if she was worried about something.

Corey followed and arrived here, where he witnessed this scene.

"Sheriff Mode! You broke into my house and are stealing things from my home, this is a crime!" Bertha's voice was firm but trembling.

And her loud tone further highlighted her anger.

"Where did you get this money?" Sheriff Mode didn't explain his actions.

He picked up the stack of money from the hidden compartment within the bed.

Corey was slightly taken aback by the sight of so much money and couldn't help but look at Bertha in surprise.

"This is my money, of course!" Bertha's tone carried a touch of hysteria, "The money my parents left after they died, and the money I've saved from working all these years! This is all mine! Why are you taking it?!"

"Captain, your actions are indeed a bit inappropriate." Corey couldn't help but speak up for Bertha.

The money on the bed, at a rough glance, was about forty to fifty thousand US dollars.

This much money, if it was Bertha's savings over many years combined with her parents' inheritance, was plausible.

"You saved it from your work?" Sheriff Mode smiled.

If it were before, he might have believed Bertha's statement.

After all, he couldn't prove that this money was related to the dismemberment case, and even if Bertha said she won the lottery, he had no way to question it.

But the System's obvious prompt indicated that this money was one of the physical evidences.

This meant that Bertha must be involved in this case to some extent!

Perhaps this money even came from Bosen, with the same origin as the package of money he received from the mysterious person last night!

"Based on my investigation these past few days, I found that Bosen was carrying a large sum of money before he died."

"And the serial numbers on that money... are exactly the same as the money you have here!"

"This money belongs to Bosen! Not yours!"

Sheriff Mode looked at Bertha with piercing eyes, his tone carrying an undeniable authority.

His words were, of course, fabricated.

Checking the serial numbers on the money would require going to the bank, and he didn't have the time.

The reason he said this was because it was a fact that this money belonged to Bosen!

From this result alone, it was enough to infer the matter of the serial numbers.

Upon hearing this, Bertha's initial anger instantly vanished, and a hint of evasion appeared in her eyes.

"Bosen's money? This money is clearly mine, how could it be related to Bosen? Are you trying to steal my money?!"

"Tell me, how did you know this money existed and how did you get it?" Sheriff Mode got straight to the point.

From the moment he saw this woman buying such expensive jewelry yesterday, Sheriff Mode began to notice her abnormality.

After learning that Bosen was carrying a large sum of money before he died, his suspicion towards Bertha intensified.

This woman was also one of the suspects, second only to Old Tang Na!

"I don't know what you're talking about, give me back my money!" Bertha shouted stubbornly and strode towards Sheriff Mode, trying to snatch the money back.

"Hold her." Sheriff Mode ordered Corey.

"Huh?" Corey hesitated a little.

However, after meeting Sheriff Mode's undeniable gaze, he stepped forward and directly restrained the woman.

"What do you want to do?!" Bertha struggled constantly.

She looked at Sheriff Mode and then at Corey, and suddenly started crying and screaming, shouting words like 'help, someone is raping me'.

"Click~"

With a slight sound, Bertha suddenly quieted down.

Just look.

The necklace she wore close to her neck was directly ripped off by Sheriff Mode!

"I asked about the price of this necklace at a jewelry store, it's worth 200,000."

"Miss Bertha, can you explain where the money to buy this necklace came from?"

Sheriff Mode's unhurried question finally silenced Bertha.

Even Corey showed a look of surprise.

"Tell me, where did you get this money?"

"If you tell the truth, this item and the money on your bed can be yours, considered a reward for helping with the case's progress."

"If you don't say anything, then all this wealth of yours will be gone from you."

"No!" A look of anxiety appeared on Bertha's beautiful face.

She no longer appeared as radiant and cheerful as she had always shown everyone, but more like a lunatic who would do anything for money.

"You're the Police, how could you decide to leave these things to me?" Bertha's first words after calming down were about the ownership of these assets.

She really loved money.

"I even let Corey out to assist me with the case investigation even though he committed that kind of crime, so I can naturally decide to let you keep these things of yours."

"The premise is that the information you provide me is confirmed to be correct and useful."

Sheriff Mode said this without batting an eye.

His words could be said to have no bottom line as a Police officer.

And Sheriff Mode himself didn't consider himself a Police officer.

This was just the identity assigned to him in this instance.

Upon hearing this, Bertha couldn't help but glance at Corey.

"I also need proof of relocation."

"You give me the proof of relocation, return this money and necklace to me, and guarantee my safety, and not pursue my responsibility, then I will tell you what I know."
