Chapter 33 Regret
The thirtieth floor of the maze, Augu Town.
Mu An and his group were about to reach their destination.
"Friends up ahead, please help me catch that damn thief!"
Upon hearing these words, a young man with a black cloth covering his face was sprinting toward Mu An's direction, holding a dagger.
Seeing the obstruction ahead, he immediately brandished his dagger with a ferocious expression, attempting to scare off the enemies.
"Get lost! You disgusting vampires, all of you, get lost!"
Not far behind him was a silver-armored knight in pursuit.
The silver armor, which should have appeared cumbersome, seemed not to affect his speed at all; his movements remained just as agile.
It was only slightly inferior to the thief, who was known for stealth and speed.
Of course, it could also be because the latter had a higher Rank.
Seeing this scene, Renée, who had read many stories about brave adventurers, immediately perked up.
She prepared to step forward immediately to intercept the thief.
After scanning with his [Enemy Detection Radar], Mu An chose to 'watch from the sidelines.'
"Don't act rashly before you understand the full story; be careful not to bring trouble upon yourself."
This remark seemed to be intentionally or unintentionally reminding a certain girl of the Elven Race.
Unfortunately, the latter remained stubborn.
In her view, when encountering an injustice, one should unsheathe their blade to help.
Upholding justice is exactly what a qualified adventurer should do!
"Hmph! I won't be like you, a coward who has to hesitate before doing anything!"
Renée snorted coldly, immediately chanting the unique incantation of the Elven Race, and activated plant magic.
The young thief was caught off guard when vines suddenly grew from beneath his feet, tripping him; losing his balance, he fell hard to the ground.
The bundle he was clutching tightly in his arms slipped away, revealing half a white steamed bun and an expensive potion in a crystal bottle.
Seeing the evidence of what appeared to be 'stolen goods,' Renée believed even more firmly that she had done nothing wrong this time.
The binding vines grew wildly, and in no time, they formed a cage full of thorns, trapping the thief inside.
"Damn it! You bastard!"
"Let me out! You damn vampires! You demons in human skin!"
"No! I can't die here!!"
The young thief struggled frantically, swinging his dagger wildly in an attempt to cut through the cage trapping him.
But those thorny vines were terrifyingly sturdy, completely beyond what a mere Rank 13 thief could Breakthrough.
Other than injuring himself all over, there was almost no hope of breaking the situation.
"I am the Silver Knight, Raul Croft. Thank you, beautiful Young Miss of the Elven Race, for your generous assistance!"
Raul wore a gentle smile, placed his right fist over his chest near his heart, and bowed slightly to express his gratitude.
He looked like a friendly and upright knight of justice.
"I was on an escort mission for a caravan when we unfortunately encountered monster attacks, and this damn thief stole some items during the chaos."
As he spoke, he bent down to pick up the potion that had fallen to the ground.
As for the half of the white steamed bun, he didn't even glance at it, and a hint of disdain even flashed in his eyes.
"It was just a small favor!"
Having finally been thanked by someone, Renée raised her head with a hint of pride.
She even intentionally glanced at a certain man who had just remained indifferent, as if showing off like a child.
Raul's gaze then naturally shifted to Mu An and Nina.
A strangely dressed human and a lowly cat-eared demi-human? And an elf? What kind of strange adventuring party is this?
However, now was not the time to think about other things; Raul issued his request again.
"Young Miss of the Elven Race, please dispel the magic; it is time for this thief to receive his due punishment."
Renée naturally would not refuse.
But the moment the thorn cage was dispelled, the young thief tried to run away.
Raul was one step faster; he strode forward, raised his longsword, and decapitated him with a single strike.
As blood sprayed, the head fell to the ground.
The special crescent-shaped birthmark on his neck was also stained red.
Mu An frowned slightly and shielded Nina behind him.
Renée was also startled, and her eyebrows furrowed in displeasure.
"Why did you kill him?"
But Raul said sanctimoniously:
"A thief who dares to steal once will steal a second, third, and fourth time..."
"I am doing this only to prevent the next person from being stolen from, or even unfortunately losing their life in the process."
"Therefore, not only must I kill him, but I must also hang his head at the town entrance to deter all the thieves lurking in the shadows!"
"Evil deserves to be eradicated; this is what I, as a knight, should do!"
Just as he said, Raul did indeed take the young thief's head when he left.
Renée felt a bit uncomfortable inside.
She thought she had done a good deed.
But if she had known beforehand that this 'good deed' would cause someone to lose their life in vain, it didn't seem so good anymore.
"Boss, I don't know why, but I always feel that he is not a good person," Nina said weakly.
Mu An patted her head without saying a word.
Renée also remained silent.
Since the group was already approaching Augu Town, Mu An recalled all other Undead Creatures into the summoning space, except for the Level 97 Death Shadow Scythe Ghost that could hide in the shadows, to prevent causing panic and riots in the town.
The closer they got to the town, the more the foot traffic increased.
Most of them were adventurers returning from adventures, including humans, demi-humans, and beastmen.
Within the dangerous maze, the town served as a 'safe point' and 'supply point.'
In daily life, multiple races that were usually at odds with each other rarely formed a stable balance.
Of course, the premise of everything was strength.
Those without strength would be devoured until not even their bones were left.
And there were countless terrifying monsters within the maze; they were the best 'chosen accomplices' for destroying evidence.
"Boss, look there..." Nina widened her beautiful eyes in disbelief and subconsciously covered her small mouth.
Looking in the direction of the girl's finger, several bloody heads were hanging on the plaque suspended high in the air next to the entrance and exit of Augu Town.
The head of the young thief from earlier was also among them.
"Mark! Where did you go? Stop fooling around, come home early; Grandma's eyes have been blind for so many years, I'm already used to it!"
"Hello, do you know where my grandson Mark went? He has a very conspicuous crescent-shaped birthmark on his neck..."
The blind old woman leaned on her cane, walking with a staggering gait, repeatedly asking everyone who passed by.
Unfortunately, she was destined to never wait for him.
Because the head of the grandson she was yearning for was hanging on the plaque.
The blood-stained crescent-shaped mark on his neck was so glaring and ironic...
For a moment, Renée became even more silent.
Perhaps, stealing even half a white steamed bun was really just to fill his stomach.
And stealing the potion was probably to cure his grandmother's blind eyes...
After figuring everything out, the girl's heart felt as if it had been pierced by a sharp blade; while it throbbed with pain, she felt a lump in her throat.
At this moment, she deeply regretted not listening to Mu An's warning earlier.
If she hadn't acted, could all of this have been avoided?
