January 19th, 2028.

Michael sat in his office, staring at the reports and updates from his legal team.

The phone on his desk rang, breaking his concentration. It was Juliet.

"Mr. Reyes, there's a courier here with a letter for you. It looks official."

"Send them in," Michael replied, trying to steady his nerves.

A few moments later, a courier entered his office and handed him a sealed envelope. Michael thanked the courier and dismissed him, then carefully opened the envelope. Inside was a letter from VirtuReal Innovations' legal team.

Michael unfolded the letter and began to read:

Pursuant to Rule 4 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, we are hereby notifying you that a lawsuit has been officially filed against Reyes Corporation in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

The complaint alleges that Reyes Corporation has unlawfully utilized proprietary algorithms belonging to VirtuReal Innovations in the development of its VR technology. As such, you are required to appear before the court to respond to these allegations.

Sarah nodded, her expression serious. "This gives us limited time, but it's manageable. We need to focus on gathering all relevant documentation and preparing a strong defense."

Michael looked at the screen where their US legal team was visible. "Mr. Collins, how do you suggest we proceed given the specifics of this case?"

Thomas Collins, the lead counsel from the US firm, leaned forward. "First, we need to file an official response to the complaint within the 21-day window. This will include our initial defenses and any motions we wish to raise. Given the allegations, our primary defense will focus on proving the independent development of your technology."

Sarah added, "We should also consider a counterclaim if we have grounds. This can often strengthen our position and provide additional leverage."

Michael nodded. "What about the court appearance? What should I expect?"

Collins replied, "The preliminary hearing is mostly procedural. The judge will establish timelines for the discovery process, hear any initial motions, and set the schedule for the trial. It's important to present yourself confidently and make it clear that we are prepared to fight these allegations."

Sarah continued, "We'll prepare you thoroughly for the hearing. Your testimony, even if limited at this stage, needs to reflect our position strongly."

Michael looked at his legal team with concern. "What if I don't appear in person for the preliminary hearing? Can my absence affect our case?"

Thomas Collins nodded, his expression serious. "It's crucial that you appear in person, Michael. Failing to do so could be interpreted as non-compliance, which might lead to a default judgment in favor of VirtuReal. Your presence signals that you're taking the matter seriously and are prepared to defend your company."

Michael sighed. "Alright, I'll be there. Let's go over what needs to be done before then."

"You can start by booking a flight to California," Thomas Collins continued. "We need to ensure you're there in advance, so you have time to meet with us and go over any last-minute details."

Juliet nodded, making notes. "I'll arrange the travel logistics and ensure everything is set up for your trip."

"Very well, let's go to California. It's going to be my first time setting foot on U.S. soil. This is going to be quite an experience," Michael said, attempting to lighten the mood despite the situation they are facing.
