281: Chapter 281 Awakening and Choice

Old Shi leaned against the cold metal base, eyes closed to regulate its breathing, feeling the abundant, gentle "Order" energy within its body that faintly resonated with the "Geocentric Furnace," as well as the stable and clear sense of power transmitted from the "interface" on its wrist.

Its injuries were mostly healed, and its stamina had largely recovered, but mentally, the exhaustion from resisting the will of the "Geocentric Furnace" and enduring the deluge of massive information, along with the indescribable sense of alienation and restraint brought by the cold "Order" brand, still lingered like a shadow.

Its gaze spent most of the time fixed on the medical pod nearby.

Inside the pod, Ling Ye was submerged in the shimmering life-sustaining fluid, resembling a sleeping ancient god. The wound on his chest had completely healed, leaving only a few faint traces of newly formed pink tissue, almost imperceptible unless looked at closely. The color had long since returned to his face, and, nourished by the "Geocentric Furnace" energy and his own "the key" mark, it even faintly radiated a restrained, warm luster like jade. His breathing was deep, long, and powerful; every rise and fall of his chest seemed to create an extremely faint, harmonious resonance with the pulsations of the "Geocentric Furnace."

He had slept for a long time. So long that Old Shi almost began to think that this deep restorative dormancy would last until the day the "Geocentric Furnace" energy ran dry.

But change, in this seemingly eternal silence, quietly occurred.

Those long-closed eyelids fluttered slightly.

Old Shi's heart leaped instantly. It held its breath, staring without blinking.

Once, twice... like the final struggle of a butterfly before breaking out of its cocoon.

Finally, amidst another steady pulse of the "Geocentric Furnace," those eyes, closed for who knows how long, slowly opened.

There was no confusion of a new awakening, no weakness of one severely injured. Those eyes, like two bottomless cold pools reflecting pale golden starlight, were calm, deep, and icy, yet they seemed to burn with some kind of restrained, never-extinguishing flame. The gaze first landed unfocused on the transparent pod cover, reflecting the orange-red glow of the "Geocentric Furnace," and then, slowly and with extreme stability, it shifted, finally locking onto the face outside the pod—Old Shi's face, which was written with tension, worry, and a trace of indescribable, complex emotion.

Their eyes met.

Ling Ye's gaze was calm and waveless, but Old Shi read too much from it—a quick assessment of the current situation, an understanding of its presence, and... a deeper, clearer, cold, and resolute will, as if he had perceived a portion of the trajectory of fate.

"Click."

With a soft sound, the medical pod detected that the user had awakened, automatically stopped the circulation of the life-sustaining fluid, drained it, and the pod door slid open silently to one side. Lukewarm air, carrying a faint scent of disinfectant, flooded into the pod.

Ling Ye made no move, just lay there quietly, letting the door open. A few seconds later, he slowly sat up with an exceptionally steady, powerful posture, devoid of any hesitation or pain.

His bare upper body displayed smooth, distinct muscle lines, and the new skin was smooth, leaving only a few faint pink marks on his chest. He lowered his head to look at his chest, then raised his hands and clenched his fists, feeling the surging and solid new power within his body like a dormant volcano, as well as the "the key" mark deep within his Soul, which was now thoroughly activated and shining brightly, and the clearer, more vast "Ancient Ring" rhythm resonating with it.

Severe injury, near-death, repair, rebirth... this series of experiences seemed to have tempered his body and Soul, refining them and pushing them to a brand new, more solid level.

"How do you feel?" Old Shi's voice broke the silence, carrying a trace of imperceptible tremor.

Ling Ye slowly turned his head to look at Old Shi. His gaze swept over Old Shi's entire body, pausing for a moment on the dark silver scar on Old Shi's right wrist that emitted a soft orange-red glow, his eyes flickering slightly.

"Very good." Ling Ye's voice sounded, calm, steady, with a slight hoarseness from not speaking for a long time, yet exceptionally clear and powerful, echoing in this empty underground space. "Better than ever."

He stepped out of the medical pod and landed on the ground, his figure as steady as a mountain. He looked around, his gaze sweeping over the massive "Geocentric Furnace," the abandoned machinery, the dusty shelves, the dark passages, and finally, it landed back on Old Shi.

"This place, the energy node of the 'Court of World Purification.' You connected to it, drew energy, and repaired us." Ling Ye said slowly, not as a question, but as a statement. In the instant he woke up, his perception—deeply bound to "the key" mark and enhanced by the resonance of the "Dual Keys"—along with the residual information echoes in the "Geocentric Furnace" energy, had already given him a rough understanding of the surrounding situation.

Old Shi nodded, not concealing anything, and briefly recounted the process after Ling Ye fell into a coma: encountering the "Hub Judgment," entering the "Purification Furnace," and finally its risky connection to the "Geocentric Furnace" to obtain energy. It emphasized the initial resonance of the "Dual Keys" and the terrifying fragments of scenes contained within the "Geocentric Furnace" energy regarding the "Seventh Star Gate" to the northeast and the source of the "abyssal eye" pollution.

Ling Ye listened quietly, his face showing no change in expression, only those deep-pool-like eyes occasionally flashing with an extremely sharp, cold light as Old Shi narrated.

"So, the 'Star Gate' is the core, and the 'abyssal eye' is the wound of the 'Gate'." Ling Ye muttered to himself, as if organizing the more complete information fragments from deep within "the key" mark that had automatically integrated after he woke up. "Are the 'Dual Keys' a protocol for opening, stabilizing, or... sealing the Star Gate?"

He looked at Old Shi, his gaze falling on the "interface" scar: "Your 'interface' is part of the Star Gate maintenance unit, which should have been paired with 'the key' to assist in stabilizing or repairing the Star Gate. But it was eroded by pollution, and its functions were lost. Now, after initial Purification, it has recovered some basic functions and established an initial resonance with 'the key'."

"Yes." Old Shi nodded, raising its wrist and looking at the glowing scar, its eyes complex. "I can feel that its affinity for 'Order' energy has greatly increased, and I can also vaguely sense that... huge, incomplete thing to the northeast, entangled in darkness. Moreover, by connecting to the 'Geocentric Furnace' through it, I can draw, store, and even limitedly guide the 'Order' energy here."

Ling Ye was silent for a moment, walked to the edge of the "Geocentric Furnace" pit, and stared at the slowly rotating orange-red energy vortex below. The vast, gentle, pure energy warmed him like a mother's embrace. "the key" mark deep in his Soul produced a harmonious resonance with this energy field, even faintly giving a sense of closeness like "returning home." But he knew this was just an illusion. This "Geocentric Furnace," this "Order," was just a part of the cold tools and heritage left behind by his parents and that ancient civilization.

The real "home" was that "Gate" flowing with starlight, the direction his parents last disappeared in, and also... the root of this world's "countdown," the source of the "abyssal eye" pollution's ravages.

"How much have you recovered?" Ling Ye asked.

"Sixty to seventy percent. My body is basically fine, and the 'interface' can provide extra energy support. But..." Old Shi paused, "Mentally, I'm not quite adapted. When connecting with the 'Geocentric Furnace,' I received too much... cold information and 'Order' imprints. I feel... a bit unlike myself."

Ling Ye turned around and looked at Old Shi, his gaze as sharp as a knife, as if he could see through every trace of unease and change deep within its Soul.

"The power of 'Order' is powerful but also dangerous. It can repair you, but it can also assimilate you." Ling Ye's voice was still calm, but carried an unquestionable warning. "Remember, power is a tool, not a master. You are the holder of the 'interface,' the resonant of 'the key,' and an ally who has walked here with me. You are not a part of the 'Court of World Purification'."

Old Shi's body trembled, meeting Ling Ye's gaze. From deep within those cold eyes, it saw a trace of... rare recognition and admonition belonging to a "companion." This caused the cold sense of alienation in its heart, born from the "Order" imprint, to dissipate slightly.

"I understand." Old Shi nodded heavily.

Ling Ye said no more. He walked back to the medical pod and picked up his clothes from the ground—already tattered, but seemingly simply cleaned by Old Shi—and put them on. Although ragged, worn on his tall, powerful body, they inexplicably added a touch of wildness and murderous aura.

Ling Ye dressed neatly, his gaze sweeping across the entire underground space again. "This place is safe and the energy is abundant. Your 'interface' is connected to the 'Geocentric Furnace,' so you can continuously draw energy, accelerate recovery, and perhaps unearth more information about this place and the 'Star Gate.' We can stay here for now to consolidate our strength, gather intelligence, and formulate a more detailed plan."

He paused, his voice becoming deeper and more powerful:

"However, you and I both 'saw' the situation of the 'Star Gate.' It is being continuously eroded by the 'abyssal eye.' Every moment of delay means the pollution deepens, and the world moves one step closer to total collapse. And..."

He raised his head, his gaze seeming to pierce through the thick rock layers, casting toward the distant, unseen beyond in the northeast:

"When I woke up, 'the key' mark transmitted a kind of... urgent, intermittent 'call' filled with sadness and warning. It came from the northeast, from the direction of the 'Star Gate.' There... something is waiting for us. Or rather, something... is about to happen, or is about to become completely irreversible."
