104: Chapter 104 Black Tide Devours the City!
Baili Lei turned into an earthy yellow streak of light and streaked across the sky.
Fury burned within him.
Lin Yuan's words, "not qualified," made him feel extremely uncomfortable.
He had to make that youth pay the price.
While speeding along, his figure came to a sudden halt.
A cold and tyrannical aura rose from the valley below.
He looked down.
Deep in the valley, the spatial fluctuations at the edge of the pitch-black rift grew increasingly violent.
A blood-red vertical pupil snapped completely open.
The rift was torn even wider.
Baili Lei's body stiffened.
This aura was precisely the demonic energy unique to the "Purgatory" of the Southern Border.
In his mind, the instructions of Clan Leader Baili Jiang echoed: "On this trip, you are only there to investigate thoroughly. If anything happens, prioritizing your own safety is paramount."
Baili Lei's face turned ashen.
He understood instantly.
This was no accident; it was a time bomb planted by the Clan Leader himself.
He suppressed all his anger and gave a short snort.
Without hesitation, he changed direction and sped away from Baoan City.
...
Inside Baoan City, the originally peaceful night sky was suddenly torn apart.
In the void to the east, south, west, and north, ear-piercing wails rang out simultaneously.
Four hideous, pitch-black rifts appeared out of thin air in the sky, like the fangs of a Great Abyss's maw.
They greedily devoured the light, staining everything around them in ink-black.
From deep within the rifts, a foul-smelling demonic energy surged forth, corroding everything in its path.
Immediately after, an eerie dark-red light screen descended from the sky.
It enveloped the entire Baoan City.
The light screen hummed.
All contact between the city and the outside world was instantly severed.
Radio signals were cut off.
The transmissions of Spiritual Masters were completely blocked.
Baoan City instantly became an isolated island.
Inside the city, the once-bustling streets instantly fell into a deathly silence.
A moment later, screams began to ring out continuously.
"That... what is that?"
"The sky is falling! The demons are coming!"
The citizens looked up in terror at the four expanding rifts in the sky and the demons pouring out of them like a tide.
It was a dense, black mass.
They blotted out the sun and sky.
A massive shadow loomed over the entire city.
The alarms of the City Defense Department pierced the night sky.
They were shrill and hurried.
"Demon attack! Demon attack! All personnel on high alert!"
Zhen Hai suddenly leaped from his bed.
He quickly donned his armor, his face grim.
He rushed out of the dormitory, with the sounds of explosions and the cries of the people echoing in his ears.
He didn't have time to think and headed straight for the cultivation room where Lin Yuan was.
"Marshal Lin! Marshal Lin!" Zhen Hai pounded on the door of the cultivation room.
There was no response from inside.
He paced back and forth anxiously, his fists clenched.
Boom!
A violent surge of energy suddenly erupted from deep within the cultivation room.
The door to the cultivation room swung open.
Lin Yuan stepped out slowly.
His senior colonel's uniform was clean and tidy.
His expression was calm.
There wasn't a hint of panic.
Zhen Hai rushed to him and reported urgently.
"Marshal Lin, four spatial rifts have appeared outside the city! An army of demons is pouring in! The city defense system has failed, and communications are down! The entire city is enveloped by a red barrier!"
Lin Yuan didn't interrupt him.
He simply walked to the window and looked up at the sky.
The four hideous rifts and the demons continuously pouring out were reflected in his eyes.
He withdrew his gaze, a mocking curl appearing on his lips.
"The Baili Family, as expected, only knows such pathetic tricks as killing with a borrowed blade."
Zhen Hai was stunned.
He didn't understand.
Lin Yuan didn't explain.
He turned around and gave Zhen Hai an order.
"Pass on my commander's order."
"All heavy firepower of the City Defense Department is to be deployed to the four city walls. Hold the walls at all costs."
"Those who disobey will be executed; even if you die, you must die on the city walls."
"Leave the rest to me."
Lin Yuan's tone was flat, yet it carried an unquestionable authority.
Zhen Hai's heart skipped a beat.
He knew that Lin Yuan's current calmness was not numbness to the crisis, but control over the entire situation.
"Yes! Marshal Lin!" Zhen Hai responded loudly.
He asked no more questions, turned, and rushed out of the residence to gather the troops.
Heavy armored vehicles roared as they drove toward the city walls.
The roar of artillery began to sound continuously.
Zhen Hai climbed the south city wall.
As he looked out, he felt his scalp go numb.
Outside the city was already a dense black sea of demons.
Low-level demons were charging frantically like a swarm of ants.
High-level demons were supervising the battle from the rear.
The numbers far exceeded estimates.
"Fire! Open fire, damn it!" Zhen Hai roared.
The heavy cannons on the wall let out earth-shattering roars.
Searing energy beams tore through the night sky and slammed into the demon swarms.
Demon limbs flew in all directions in the explosions, a mangled mess of flesh and blood.
But there were too many demons.
They trampled over the corpses of their own kind, charging forward wave after wave.
The defensive line on the south wall was barely maintained under Zhen Hai's command.
However, the number of soldier casualties was climbing at an alarming rate.
The brutal battle had begun.
"West city in critical condition! West city in critical condition!" the communicator's shouts echoed in the command center.
On the west city wall, the garrison commander Du Yan watched everything before him, his heart aching.
"Damn it! Where's the defensive array? Why has it failed!" he bellowed.
A sky full of "Shadow Kill Bat Swarms" screeched as they charged toward the city wall.
These demons were small in stature but extremely agile.
Their sharp claws and teeth frantically gnawed at the city wall's defensive array.
The light screen of the array dimmed visibly to the naked eye.
"Quick! Use flame shells! Burn them to death!" Du Yan commanded.
However, the Shadow Kill Bat Swarms were numerous.
They tore through the defensive array and rushed into the interior of the city wall.
Soldiers were pounced upon and instantly submerged by countless bat shadows.
"Ah!"
"Help!"
Du Yan watched helplessly as his subordinates were dismembered, their blood staining the city wall red.
"Where's the ammunition? How much ammunition is left!" he screamed.
"Commander! There's almost none left!" the communicator responded tremblingly.
Du Yan's body swayed unsteadily.
He looked at the flying demons pouncing from the sky, and despair welled up in his heart.
Out of ammunition and supplies.
He had carried out the order to hold at all costs to the very limit.
He gripped the energy core in his hand, a look of determination flashing in his eyes.
"Brothers! Come with me on the final journey!"
He prepared to detonate his Qi Sea and perish together with the demons.
Du Yan closed his eyes.
He waited for death to descend.
Just then, a rapid whistling sound of something cutting through the air came from the sky.
A sky full of willow leaves Spirit Blades suddenly appeared in the air.
They were a lush, dripping green.
They were as thin as a cicada's wing.
Each one carried a sharpness that tore through the air.
These Spirit Blades turned into a green torrent, sweeping toward the battlefield.
