47: Chapter 47 Shackles
An hour before dawn, Lu Chen woke up.
It wasn't a natural awakening—he was pulled awake.
Something tugged inside his Sea of Consciousness.
It wasn't Spiritual Qi. It wasn't a Restriction.
It was a thread so thin it was almost invisible—pulling outward from his Sea of Consciousness.
The pull was very light, like a fishing line entering the water—with a very patient angler standing on the bank.
The Xuantian Cyan Jade Token. The second layer. Wind Listening Technique.
Fang Jing said the Cyan Jade Token had three layers of Restrictions: sealing cultivation, preventing backlash, and positioning.
He didn't mention the Wind Listening Technique. It wasn't that he forgot—he never intended to say anything at all.
Han Yuan had been the one to tell him.
Lu Chen sat up, his fingers pressing against the Cyan Jade Token.
The token was tucked against his chest—side-by-side with the sixth finger bone.
The finger bone was heating up. The token was heating up, too.
The two kinds of heat were different—the heat from the finger bone radiated outward, while the heat from the token drew inward.
A very thin, warm current seeped from the token into his chest—not an attack, but a probe.
It was like a very light finger touching his Sea of Consciousness.
It touched the edge of his Grey Line Meridians—stopped, hesitated, and then skirted around them.
It wasn't that it didn't want to enter—it was that it didn't dare to yet.
"Fang Jing is listening," Lu Chen said in a low voice.
Qin Wu was sleeping at the cave entrance with his blade resting on his knees—he opened his eyes. "Now?"
"Since last night. The Wind Listening Technique requires a connection of Spiritual Qi—it's inconvenient for him during the day. He probes in at night while I'm sleeping. The Sea of Consciousness has the lowest defense during sleep. The Wind Listening Technique cuts in from the corner of the Sea of Consciousness—leaving no trace. Even if discovered, it wouldn't wake me up."
"Can you block it?"
Lu Chen didn't answer. He opened one of his Grey Line Meridians—the one running from his Dantian to his brain.
Ink-gold Spiritual Qi flowed in reverse—not as an attack, but as a shroud.
The Grey Line Meridians acted like a transparent glove, wrapping around the Spiritual Qi fluctuations outside the Cyan Jade Token.
The token was heating up—but the thin current seeping outward was blocked by the Grey Line Meridians.
It wasn't completely blocked. It was intercepting a portion and letting a portion pass.
The portion that was let through was false information—that the Spiritual Qi in his Dantian was steady, his Sea of Consciousness was quiet, and there were no signs of anything unusual.
The intercepted portion—the token was still operating.
He was feeding the Wind Listening Technique a false wall.
"What can Fang Jing receive?" Qin Wu sat up.
"He receives that I am sleeping. My breathing is steady. My Spiritual Qi is calm. My Sea of Consciousness is quiet. It's the same as the previous hour, and much like the previous night."
"Will he notice?"
"Not for now. The false wall is coated with my own Spiritual Qi—there are no traces of the Grey Line Meridians. His Wind Listening Technique is locked onto my Cyan Jade Token—the token is mine. He can only hear things outside the token. The Grey Line Meridians are inside."
Shen Xi woke up. He was lying on his side on the ground—still clutching that piece of charcoal.
After waking, he froze for a moment—looking at his hand, the charcoal, and the dozens of "Shen Xi" written on the ground. Only then did he slowly sit up.
"Are you blocking eavesdropping?"
"The Wind Listening Technique. Xuantian Sect."
"The Xuantian Sect's Wind Listening Technique is an old relic," Shen Xi said, wiping the herbal dregs from the corner of his mouth. "Forty or fifty years ago—when Han Yuan was still in the Ten Thousand Sword Sect, he cracked it once. He didn't break it by force. He fed it false signals. He fed it for three years—until Han Yuan exposed himself. Did he teach you?"
"He didn't. But the principle is similar."
Shen Xi picked up a new piece of charcoal from the slate. He drew a circle on the ground. Inside the circle, he wrote "Cyan Jade Token." Outside, he drew a few arcs—"Wind Listening perception range."
"The Wind Listening Technique steals Spiritual Root fluctuations. It doesn't steal speech—the conversations in that little Sea of Consciousness of yours aren't what it wants. It wants changes in Spiritual Qi—cultivation Breakthroughs, operation of Cultivation Techniques, triggering of Restrictions. What is Fang Jing waiting for?"
"Waiting for my cultivation to rise. Or—waiting for my Grey Spirit Root to show an abnormality."
"So you cannot have a Breakthrough while he is listening." Shen Xi's charcoal drew a thick line outside the "Cyan Jade Token." "Compress the Breakthrough into very small chunks—increase a little each time. Do not exceed the threshold he set. Qi Refining Level 6 to Level 7 can be divided into five Breakthroughs—with three days in between. Increase by twenty percent each time. The Wind Listening Technique will read twenty percent as 'Cultivation Technique operation speeded up'—not a Breakthrough. Just that the person has woken up."
Qin Wu looked at the circle on the ground. "Can you calculate his threshold?"
"The threshold for the Xuantian Sect's Spiritual Root fluctuation theft is fixed—twelve bronze notches." Shen Xi wrote a number outside the circle. "Fang Jing might set it at the fifth notch—medium sensitivity. He won't notice fluctuations below five notches. If you cut the Breakthrough into small chunks—each chunk no more than four notches—he won't be able to see it."
Lu Chen took the seventh empty finger bone out from his chest.
It was empty. There was no stored power inside—but the bone itself belonged to Li Xuanyi.
The finger bone was a type of container—for sealing power. After it was emptied, there were still residual Spiritual Patterns on the glass-like walls.
These Spiritual Patterns could absorb a tiny bit of Spiritual Qi—very little. But if read with the Grey Line Meridians—one could read the shape of the Spiritual Patterns.
He placed the left finger bone onto the finger bone of his right index finger. The moment the two touched—the ink-gold Spiritual Qi in his Dantian churned. It wasn't a Breakthrough. It was a resonance.
The Spiritual Patterns inside the empty finger bone were moving—not alive. It was like a dried-up riverbed encountering the first drop of rain.
The Spiritual Patterns crawled along the Grey Line Meridians into his Dantian—not as power. As information.
The Spiritual Patterns of the empty finger bone held the final record. It wasn't written by Shen Xi. It was carved by Li Xuanyi.
"The seventh, eighth, and ninth—each of the three gates has a key. When all ten keys are obtained, the furnace can be reversed. However, reversal is not redemption—it is a choice. The Love-Refining Furnace takes from them, and returns to them. They are not you. You are the furnace master—when the furnace returns what it took, what you lost will never return. Think carefully. The fire ends."
The Spiritual Patterns finished burning in his Dantian. The last trace of light dissipated—turning into a faint, warm current that seeped into the Grey Line Meridians.
Li Xuanyi's final words. Not in the Inverted Tower. In the finger bone's Spiritual Patterns.
Each of the three gates has a key—not the finger bones. It's the Spiritual Patterns inside the finger bones. The seventh, eighth, and ninth finger bones are the keys that lock the Seal of the Cave of Ten Thousand Desires. All three are needed to open that well.
Only when all ten keys are obtained can the Love-Refining Furnace be reversed. When reversed—the furnace will return the emotions to the original people. But the memories Lu Chen himself lost—will never come back.
His mother's face. Qin Wu's smile. These things that had already been refined away—were not just temporarily taken. They were already burnt away. Reversing the furnace wouldn't bring them back. Reversal was to let others who had been refined take back what they had lost. It was not to save himself.
"Did you understand it?" Shen Xi looked at Lu Chen's expression.
"The last words Li Xuanyi carved into the Spiritual Patterns—the seventh, eighth, and ninth finger bones are the keys to the Cave of Ten Thousand Desires. All three are needed to open the well. Ten Fingers Clasped—reverses the Love-Refining Furnace. But reversal can only save others. It cannot save oneself."
Shen Xi was silent for a while. Then he threw the charcoal into the fire. "What he wrote on the walls in the Inverted Tower—that was for others to hear. What was carved into the Spiritual Patterns—that was for himself."
Outside the cave, it was dawn. The miasma had thinned by a layer.
Lu Chen tucked the empty finger bone into his chest. He stood up and walked to the cave entrance. He probed southward with his perception—the Spiritual Qi that was stationed at the south entrance of the Thousand Miasma Valley was still there. It had guarded all night. It hadn't come in. It hadn't retreated either. It wasn't a search and capture—it was surveillance.
One person. Their cultivation wasn't high—about Qi Refining Level 5. Not one of Fang Jing's men. Fang Jing's men wouldn't be this steady—the Xuantian Sect's scouts were very professional. This person had squatted there all night—not changing their breath once. They didn't seem professional. They seemed to have been given a death order—"Guard until someone comes out." No one told him who would come out. They only told him—he must guard.
"There's one outside." Qin Wu put away his blade. "Should we—"
"No need. They aren't here to fight."
Lu Chen walked outward. He walked a dozen steps outside the cave entrance—the miasma brushed against his face. He stopped. He raised his hand in the direction of the south entrance—the white line on his wrist glowed in the miasma. It was very faint. So faint it was almost invisible. But the grey mark on the line—appeared very clear in the light.
He was looking for resonance. Not the resonance of the Grey Spirit Root—but human resonance.
The Spiritual Qi of the person at the south entrance shuddered. It was very light—not fear. It was recognition of something.
Then that Spiritual Qi began to retreat southward. It retreated very slowly. It wasn't a withdrawal. It was going back to report.
"Not Fang Jing's people," Lu Chen lowered his hand. "It's someone from the Hehuan Sect. They have already set up sentries outside the Thousand Miasma Valley. There should be more than one—there might be some at the north of the valley, too."
"How do we get through?"
"We go during the day. When the miasma is thickest—there are fewer people." Lu Chen turned around. "Shen Xi. You stay here and keep writing. When you're done—keep it. Wait for me to come out of the Hehuan Sect. If you still remember who you are then—come with me."
Shen Xi didn't answer. He wiped the characters on the slate clean—and rewrote two characters.
"Shen Xi."
Then he wrote it again. Over and over again. Until the slate was almost full—only then did he stop.
"You go," Shen Xi said. "I will guard the valley entrance. I won't live for too long—but I can hold it for half a month. Within half a month—the people from the Hehuan Sect cannot enter."
Qin Wu shouldered his pack. His blade hung at his waist. When he left the cave, he looked back at Shen Xi.
Shen Xi didn't look up. He was still writing.
He kept writing until the ink-gold Spiritual Qi spread from under Lu Chen's feet—to the cave entrance—touching the Restriction set by Shen Xi—shuddering slightly. Then the Spiritual Qi between the three of them pushed outward like ripples. It pushed to the edge of the Thousand Miasma Valley—touching those who were waiting outside the valley.
It only touched once. Then it pulled back.
It wasn't a signal. It was a farewell.
The south entrance of the Thousand Miasma Valley. The road climbed up from the bottom of the valley. Once over the top—it was a mountain ridge. On the south side of the ridge—the Hehuan Sect. Three more days of travel.
The Spiritual Qi in Lu Chen's Dantian was rising little by little. It wasn't a Breakthrough—it was compression. Cutting the rising power into small chunks. Each chunk exchanged for one breath. The Qi rose from the Grey Line Meridians—passing through his heart, throat, and brain. Then it dissipated from the corner of the Sea of Consciousness. What the Wind Listening Technique on the Cyan Jade Token felt—was only that the operation of his Spiritual Qi had slightly accelerated by half a breath.
From Qi Refining Level 6 upward. Little by little. Like water slowly rising over his ankles.
