49: Chapter 49 The Storm Is Coming

After hanging up the phone, Li Hongji immediately dialed Secretary Gao Yuliang's private line and launched into an aggressive reprimand: "Yuliang, why is the public security in your Jiang Province so chaotic? How exactly are you doing your job as the Secretary of the Provincial Political and Legal Affairs Commission?"

Secretary Gao Yuliang was completely baffled by this sudden questioning. Fortunately, Li Hongji still valued this old subordinate somewhat; after venting his anger, he briefly explained the situation.

Upon hearing this, cold sweat broke out on Secretary Gao Yuliang's forehead, and he hurriedly assured him: "Old leader, rest assured. I will personally look into this matter and guarantee that I will bring Li Dakang out of the Police Station safe and sound!"

After hanging up, Secretary Gao Yuliang immediately called Liang Qunfeng, the Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of Mingzhou City. As soon as the call connected, he launched into a furious scolding: "Liang Qunfeng! How are the police in your Mingzhou handling things? You dare to arrest just anyone?"

"I think your time as the Secretary of the Municipal Political and Legal Affairs Commission is up!"

Liang Qunfeng was bewildered by the scolding, but after figuring out the cause, the phone call that Director Ma Baoguo received took place.

Director Ma Baoguo hung up the phone, wiped away cold sweat, took a deep breath to calm his nerves, and returned to the interrogation room.

He pulled Young Master Lu into the corridor and said in a low voice: "Young Master Lu, why don't we just let this matter go?"

"Just now, Chief Liang from the Municipal Public Security Bureau called me personally, ordering me to ensure the safety of the young man inside, and he is on his way here."

He specifically emphasized the words "Chief Liang."

Within the Mingzhou City public security system, everyone was accustomed to calling Liang Qunfeng "Chief Liang," while outsiders respectfully addressed him as "Secretary Liang."

This was because Liang Qunfeng was not only the Chief of the Mingzhou City Public Security Bureau but also a member of the Mingzhou Municipal Party Committee Standing Committee and the Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission. Furthermore, he was a close follower of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee member and Mingzhou Municipal Party Committee Secretary Meng Qixiang, holding a pivotal position in Mingzhou City's political scene.

Although Young Master Lu was arrogant, he was not brainless.

Hearing that even the Secretary of the Municipal Political and Legal Affairs Commission, Liang Qunfeng, attached such importance to this person, it seemed the other party's background was at least no worse than his own.

He gritted his teeth and said reluctantly: "Alright then, Director Ma Baoguo, I will give you this face."

The heavy weight in Director Ma Baoguo's heart finally lifted; fortunately, this young master still had some sense of propriety, otherwise, today's affair would have been truly difficult to resolve.

Returning to the questioning room, Director Ma Baoguo squeezed out a smile and said to Li Dakang: "Young comrade, I have just persuaded Young Master Lu, and he has agreed not to pursue this matter further. You may leave."

"Hmph."

Li Dakang sneered: "I said it before: it's easy to invite me in, but asking me to leave won't be so simple."

The voice was not loud, but it was resonant, ringing out with particular clarity in the quiet interrogation room.

"Kid, don't push your luck!"

Young Master Lu's inner anger was ignited again, but this time he had learned his lesson. He said to Director Ma Baoguo: "Director Ma Baoguo, since he doesn't want to leave, then don't let him go! But I must make a phone call to my father first."

...

Mingzhou City Mayor Lv Zhihe had attended an important investment promotion banquet that evening. Representing the Mingzhou Municipal Government, he had signed investment letters of intent totaling hundreds of millions with several merchants from Hong Kong. He was in a great mood and had drunk a few extra cups, so he was slightly tipsy when he returned home.

Pushing open the door, he didn't see his son, Lv Bin, so he asked his wife, who was watching TV: "Has Xiaobin not returned yet?"

"No, he went out to eat with friends."

His wife took his coat and frowned upon smelling the alcohol: "You drank so much again?"

"Hmph, that kid spends all day neglecting his proper work and running around causing trouble."

Although Mayor Lv Zhihe complained, there wasn't much reproach in his tone.

Just then, the telephone in the living room rang abruptly.

"Answer it and see who it is."

Mayor Lv Zhihe rubbed his temples: "If it's not urgent, tell them to come to my office to find me tomorrow. I'm tired today and want to get some proper rest."

His wife answered the phone and spoke a few words, then covered the receiver and said: "It's our son calling; he says he has something urgent to talk to you about."

"This kid didn't go out and cause trouble again, did he?"

Mayor Lv Zhihe's heart skipped a beat, and his drunkenness instantly faded by more than half.

He took the phone and asked, suppressing his anger: "Xiaobin, why aren't you home so late?"

"Dad, something happened here..."

On the other end of the line, Young Master Lu's voice carried obvious panic. He briefly recounted what had happened but omitted the part where he had harassed Du Meiyan, only speaking about how arrogant and domineering the other party was.

"You good-for-nothing! All you know how to do all day is cause trouble!"

Mayor Lv Zhihe scolded angrily, his voice making the receiver tremble.

But scolding aside, he and his wife only had this one son. Since he was small, they had held him in their palms for fear he might fall, and held him in their mouths for fear he might melt, which had caused Young Master Lu to develop an arrogant, domineering, and conceited personality.

After pondering for a moment, Mayor Lv Zhihe softened his tone: "Wait there, I will come over personally."

At this moment, Mayor Lv Zhihe had not yet realized the severity of the problem. In his view, even if the other party had a significant background, his son had not caused any substantial harm, and with him, the Mayor, appearing in person, the matter should be resolved.

If the other party refused to let it go, he wasn't someone to be trifled with either; he had people backing him as well.

But what Mayor Lv Zhihe did not know was that Li Dakang's background far exceeded his imagination.

A storm was quietly brewing...
