17: Why is there a mirror?

Jiang Chen and Cheng Yurou sat in the donkey cart, swaying for a whole morning, and finally arrived at the entrance of Dongfeng Town.

Villagers from outside the town didn't need to pay to enter, but if you wanted to stay in the town overnight, you had to stay in an inn or a communal lodging house; if you were found sleeping on the streets, you would be thrown in jail.

Although the Great Lan Dynasty was powerful, there were quite a few covetous forces around it.

And to buy property in the town, you first had to have a household registration in the town.

"Thanks, Uncle Bao."

Jiang Chen handed Jiang Dabao, the cart driver, a string of copper coins.

Jiang Dabao, with a pipe in his mouth, glanced at the money Jiang Chen gave him, and his eyes immediately lit up.

He accepted it with a chuckle.

"If you want to go back, you know the place; every three days, just find me anytime."

Jiang Dabao said.

"Okay."

Jiang Chen nodded.

Jiang Dabao also cracked his whip and drove the cart away.

"Goodbye, Uncle Dabao."

Cheng Yurou also said politely.

At this moment, the two were on a street in Dongfeng Town; the road was paved with smooth bluestone slabs, and both sides of the road were lined with hawkers.

It was similar to other ancient towns, but this was the market at the city gate, so patrolling soldiers could be seen passing by.

Cheng Yurou carried the box she had brought with her when she got married.

The bustling traffic in the town filled Cheng Yurou's eyes with anticipation, but her worn-out clothes made her feel a bit self-conscious. Passersby cast surprised glances at her, as if to say, "How could such a beautiful girl be dressed like this?"

"Rou'er, let's find an inn to stay in first, and then we'll go buy some new clothes later."

"After we get our household registration this afternoon, we'll look for a good house."

Jiang Chen said.

"Mm-hmm, I'll listen to Xiao Chen... Xiao Chen, this is what I've saved over the years, and some dowry, silver ornaments. If we pawn them, we should be able to get four taels of silver."

Cheng Yurou handed over a small sachet, looking at Jiang Chen expectantly.

Seeing Cheng Yurou's resolute expression, Jiang Chen immediately pinched her pretty face.

"You little gold-swallowing beast, you don't need your little stash; I have money here."

Jiang Chen didn't tell Cheng Yurou about the ten thousand taels of gold in his System space. After all, wealth should not be flaunted. Although Cheng Yurou was his own person, it was inevitable that she might be used by those with ulterior motives.

Not to mention the ten thousand taels of gold, he had already obtained more than ten taels of silver just from Zhao Erming and others.

Don't underestimate these more than ten taels.

These Black Tiger Gang members, for some unknown reason, had made all the villagers sign ten-year installment accounts. Although the monthly payments seemed small, the duration was long, and interest was added from time to time.

Before, Jiang Chen and his family had to pay one tael and six qian of silver every month.

One tael of silver could be exchanged for one thousand copper coins in the Great Lan Dynasty.

One qian was equivalent to one hundred copper coins.

One tael of gold could be exchanged for one hundred taels of silver.

Furthermore, these people wouldn't allow early repayment, saying that doing so would be a breach of contract and they would have to compensate them for huge losses.

Jiang Chen was not visiting Dongfeng Town for the first time.

He had come a few times with Jiang Dalei before, and when he caught large game, he would also bring it to the town to sell. Although there was a tax, he could sell it for a good price.

Dongfeng Town was divided into ten districts.

The outer three districts, the middle three districts, the inner three districts, and a core district.

The core district belonged to the Town Guard Office and other government agencies.

The inner three districts were, without a doubt, the safest, had the best public security, and were the most prosperous, belonging to the wealthy area.

The middle three districts were slightly inferior.

The outer three districts were places for all sorts of people. Within a two-hundred-li radius of Dongfeng Town, there were no fewer than fifty villages, and people came and went in an endless stream every day, but they were basically concentrated in the outer three districts.

Jiang Chen directly took Cheng Yurou to the inner three districts.

"The streets here are so wide... I feel like ten horses could run abreast..."

"Xiao Chen, look at that carriage, it's golden! Is it pure gold?"

"Xiao Chen..." With a curious Cheng Yurou, he walked all the way to a seemingly high-end inn.

It was called Bancheng Inn.

Cheng Yurou looked at such a luxurious inn and immediately felt apprehensive.

"Xiao Chen, this inn looks very expensive. We can just find a regular one..."

"The town is not like the village; everything costs money."

"Don't worry, Rou'er, just listen to me."

Jiang Chen didn't explain much.

Under the shocked gaze of the waiter, he asked for a first-class grand suite.

The room rate for just one day was two taels and three qian.

Jiang Chen booked it for three days in one go.

Although Cheng Yurou didn't know where Jiang Chen got so much money, she didn't ask further. She just needed to follow Xiao Chen.

The reason she didn't ask was because Cheng Yurou knew Jiang Chen's style of doing things: he wouldn't do anything he wasn't confident about, nor would he do anything impulsive or thoughtless.

"Send two sets of clothes first, then call a female tailor, and also send some food to the room."

Jiang Chen paid ten taels of silver.

When someone could spend so lavishly, why would the waiter care what kind of clothes you were wearing?

Perhaps some wealthy Young Masters just liked to play these tricks?

Like a theme of a distressed hunter couple.

The waiter had long been accustomed to such sights.

"Alright."

"It will be sent up to you shortly."

When Cheng Yurou pushed open the door and entered, she saw the spacious and bright living room, the luxurious and cozy bedroom, and the soft and comfortable large bed. There was even a dressing table and a wardrobe. The entire room was filled with a faint scent of sandalwood, and the window faced the inner courtyard, allowing her to see the unique scenery within Bancheng Inn.

"This is a quilt made of Heavenly Silkworm silk..."

"This is sandalwood..."

"This bronze mirror can be so bright..."

Cheng Yurou touched these luxurious and exquisite items. Many of them she had never even heard of, let alone seen.

Although it was only a temporary possession, for Cheng Yurou, experiencing it once was worth it.

Of course, the prerequisite was to experience it with Xiao Chen.

If it meant selling herself to get these things, Cheng Yurou would absolutely not do it.

"Rou'er, if you like it, then our future house will be built to this standard."

Jiang Chen said with a smile.

When Cheng Yurou heard the phrase "our house," her expression immediately changed, and her cheeks couldn't help but flush.

"Rou'er, you've been traveling all day. Go take a bath and rest."

"Look, there's such a big bathtub here, enough for the two of us..."

Cheng Yurou's face turned even redder as she listened to Jiang Chen's words.

"How... how is there such a big mirror opposite this bathtub..."

"You'll know in a bit!"

"Ah..."
