Chapter 284: Out of the Abyss

After what felt like an eternity of trudging through endless gloom, the group finally saw the glimmer of light far ahead, like a mirage in the distance. At first, they thought it was another illusion born from exhaustion, another cruel trick of the abyss.But as they moved closer, the oppressive heaviness that had wrapped around their lungs for days loosened, the black mist thinning until streaks of pale light broke through.

The empress slowed her steps, her weary eyes narrowing against the sudden brightness. "We’re close," she whispered, her voice trembling...not from fear this time, but from disbelief. The others followed her gaze, and their breaths hitched. The suffocating darkness that had followed them since the beginning began to recede, retreating like a living thing afraid of what lay beyond.

One final step...and they broke through.

The moment they crossed the boundary, the atmosphere changed. The air rushed into their lungs, crisp and cool, filling them with life again. The black sky was gone, replaced by a vast expanse of blue so vivid it made their eyes sting. White clouds drifted lazily above, golden sunlight spilling through them like warm silk.

For a long moment, no one spoke. They stood there, blinking against the brightness, each of them feeling the sun on their faces for the first time in what seemed like years. Lira sank to her knees, clutching the earth beneath her hands, laughing and sobbing all at once. "We made it," she whispered, her voice cracking. "We actually made it."

Theron exhaled a shaky breath, his eyes turned upward, reflecting the sky. "I thought I’d never see it again," he muttered.

The empress remained standing, her robes torn and stained, her face pale but her gaze radiant. For the first time since they had entered that cursed chasm, her expression softened. The golden sunlight brushed her cheeks, and a faint glimmer passed through her eyes. "The heavens have not forsaken us," she said quietly. "Not yet."

The Ice Belle, stirred faintly. Her tiny wings shimmered in the sunlight, scattering motes of frost-like light into the air. The divine dome that had protected them for so long dissolved slowly, its silver sheen fading into nothingness, leaving only the soft whisper of wind against their skin.

The group breathed deeply, as though their bodies were relearning what it meant to feel alive. For a moment, they forgot their hunger, their thirst, their wounds...there was only relief, and the overwhelming gratitude of survival.

Even in his unconscious state, Lucas’s body seemed to respond to the change. His fingers twitched slightly, his breathing steadying as the light touched him. The Ice Belle looked down at him, her small head tilting, and her crystal-like eyes glowed faintly as if in recognition of something only she could sense.

The empress knelt beside him, her fingers brushing over his forehead with gentleness. "Rest well," she whispered.

The group moved away from the boundary without looking back. The land behind them was scarred, tainted by darkness and decay, but as they walked farther, the corruption began to fade. The air grew lighter, and the ground beneath softened, no longer brittle and cracked. Patches of green began to appear between the stones, and soon, tufts of grass swayed in the gentle breeze. It was a sign that they had truly crossed over, leaving the cursed abyss behind.

They journeyed onward until they came upon a quiet clearing where a small fountain stood, carved from pale stone and overgrown with moss. Water bubbled softly from its centre, clear as crystal and shimmering under the sunlight. The sight of it alone made their parched throats tighten with longing. Without hesitation, they rushed forward, kneeling by the fountain’s edge and scooping water with trembling hands.

The first sip was almost sacred. The cool liquid slid down their throats, washing away the dryness that had plagued them for days. Lira let out a quiet gasp, her eyes glistening with tears as she drank deeply. Even the empress, usually so composed, cupped her hands and drank slowly, closing her eyes as the water refreshed her weary spirit.

For a while, no one spoke. The only sound was the gentle trickle of the fountain and the quiet murmurs of gratitude that escaped their lips. The crippled grandmaster leaned back against a rock, his face softening for the first time since they entered the abyss. "The heavens are merciful," he whispered, his voice hoarse.

Theron glanced at Lucas’s still form, resting nearby beneath the shade of a willow-like tree. The Ice Belle sat on his chest again, splashing her tiny fingers in a small bowl of water she had conjured from the air. It seemed to amuse her endlessly, and for the first time, the group found themselves smiling faintly at the sight.

Two of the Valerion guards, regaining a bit of their strength, rose to their feet and exchanged a quick look. "We’ll bring something to eat," one of them said quietly. The empress nodded without objection, and the two men disappeared into the nearby woods, their figures silent and purposeful.

The group settled down to rest. Some lay back and closed their eyes, others washed the grime and soot from their faces. The sunlight filtering through the leaves above felt gentle and warm. After endless days of walking through torment, the simple sound of running water and rustling leaves felt like a blessing beyond measure.

Before long, the faint sound of movement came from the trees, and the smell of raw meat followed...the Valerion guards had returned, one carrying an antelope slung over his back...the other carrying vegetables and scent leaves that would be used to cook the meat. Their catch was more than enough to lift the spirits of the weary survivors.


They built three fires in the clearing before the sun began to set, the flames flickering in rhythmic unison as twilight descended over the land.

The loyalists gathered around their own fire, speaking in low tones among themselves, weary but thankful to be alive. The empress and her company...Lira, Nyx, Selene, Seraphine, and Mirielle...sat together by another, their faces lit by the orange glow that softened the exhaustion etched into their features. A short distance away, the Valerion guards and their captain, Varran, shared their fire with the crippled grandmaster, who sat slightly apart from them, quietly watching the flames.

The smell of roasting meat soon filled the air. They had skinned the antelope the guards caught earlier, cutting it into careful pieces and rubbing it with crushed vegetables and scent leaves. The juices dripped into the flames, sending up tiny sparks that danced in the cool evening air. Everyone waited in near silence at first, letting the warmth seep into their bones, each one lost in thoughts they dared not voice.
