9: Chapter 9 The Door of Opportunity

As the applause at the end of the lecture subsided, the students began to leave the hall one after another.

The lecture hall quickly emptied out for the most part, leaving only a few lingering students clustered around the podium, hoping to exchange a few private words with Professor Zhang.

There were also several individuals who appeared to be college leaders or professors from other departments.

After Professor Zhang patiently answered questions from several students, the group of professors and leader-like figures finally stepped forward.

Chen Youhua did not rush forward. Instead, he stood quietly in the aisle next to the front row seats, carrying his backpack and waiting patiently like a silent plant.

He clearly saw a gray-haired, dignified university leader first shake hands warmly with Professor Zhang and exchange pleasantries.

"Professor Zhang, that was a brilliant lecture! You explained profound concepts in simple terms; it was truly captivating!"

Professor Zhang responded with a few modest words of thanks.

Then, the conversation turned toward more practical matters.

The university leader asked with concern.

"Professor Zhang, how is your current key project on cancer cell migration progressing? Are there any difficulties that require support at the university level?"

Professor Zhang gave a brief report on the progress, mentioning some equipment requirements and funding bottlenecks.

The university leader nodded, stating they would do their best to coordinate. After a few more polite remarks, they took their leave along with the other administrative staff.

The remaining individuals were clearly professors from the School of Biology or other related disciplines.

The atmosphere of their conversation shifted immediately, becoming less about official pleasantries and more focused on the depth of academic discussion.

They gathered around the podium and began to discuss in low voices.

The topic soon focused on the common dilemmas currently faced by basic biological research.

They spoke of the reliance on expensive imported key instruments, the loss of top talent, the difficulty and long cycles of translating basic research results, and the helplessness regarding the lack of social attention and investment in niche basic disciplines.

As they chatted, the conversation somehow circled back to the concept of the "Artificial Cytoskeleton" or "Cellular Exoskeleton" that Chen Youhua had proposed during the lecture.

"Old Zhang, that idea the freshman student proposed earlier—though it sounds a bit far-fetched, it's actually quite interesting when you think about it."

The Professor with Thick Glasses said, his tone carrying a hint of novelty and contemplation.

"Indeed."

Another Professor with Slightly Curly Hair chimed in.

"Using external batons and frameworks to guide collective cell behavior—this line of thinking steps outside traditional gene editing and has a bit of an engineering mindset to it."

"However..."

The Professor with Thick Glasses shook his head.

"The difficulty is too great."

"Cells aren't machine parts; how could they be so easily obedient?"

"Furthermore, once the scale is increased, there are more variables than one can imagine."

At that moment, someone noticed Chen Youhua standing quietly not far away.

"Oh, the student who asked the question hasn't left yet!"

The Professor with Slightly Curly Hair beckoned to Chen Youhua.

"Student, come over here! Let's chat about that idea of yours."

Chen Youhua walked over as requested and stood among the professors. His expression remained calm, showing no signs of restraint.

The Professor with Thick Glasses looked at him with great interest.

"Student, that idea you mentioned about an artificial skeleton directing collective cell behavior is quite bold."

"Can you be more specific? How do you think one might practically start? Don't be afraid of being wrong; just speak your mind."

Chen Youhua nodded and began to speak, his voice clear and calm.

"Professors, actually, part of my inspiration comes from nature itself."

"The animals and plants we see—these complex multicellular organisms—aren't they essentially super-cell clusters formed by countless cells performing their respective duties and operating synergistically under a naturally formed set of rules and frameworks?"

"Their morphology, functional differentiation, and coordination between tissues all rely on a precise natural exoskeleton formed during development. That is to say, the tissue structures, the extracellular matrix, and the signaling pathway networks that run through them."

He paused and continued.

"My vision is to mimic this naturally occurring process but attempt to accelerate or guide it through artificial design and intervention."

"Rather than pursuing a fully functional artificial organism from the start, I'd go from easy to difficult, first achieving some localized, controllable modular functional clusters."

He elaborated further.

"For example, as a first step, perhaps we could try designing a simple signaling skeletal network to guide a group of engineered bacteria to arrange and attach themselves in a preset pattern on a specific material surface, forming a biological coating with basic conductive or sensing functions. This could be considered a prototype for applications in industrial or material fields."

"Going a step further, we could design smart scaffolds capable of responding to specific chemical signals to guide stem cells to differentiate into different tissue cells in various regions of the scaffold, moving toward the construction of simple artificial tissues. This would be an initial goal in the medical field."

"The ultimate long-term ideal, of course, is to construct more complex and functionally diverse cellular biological communities that can work together like natural organs to serve specific needs. However, this requires long-term accumulation of basic knowledge and technological breakthroughs."

The professors listened with varying expressions on their faces.

Some nodded slightly, feeling that this approach of progressing from simple to complex through modularity was quite practical.

Others remained with their brows furrowed, clearly feeling that even the first step would be fraught with difficulties, let alone the long-term goals.

In their view, for biology to develop to the point where functional multicellular biological communities could be built like toy blocks was simply too far off, filled with insurmountable scientific chasms.

However, no one spoke out to discourage him.

The Professor with Thick Glasses patted Chen Youhua on the shoulder.

"The idea is very bold and quite inspiring! It's good for young people to be daring in their thinking."

"Research, after all, requires this kind of drive to explore the unknown."

"Even if only one or two small goals are eventually achieved, it would still be a valuable contribution to the development of biomaterials or tissue engineering!"

The other professors also nodded in agreement and offered a few words of encouragement.

After chatting for a while, the professors also took their leave one after another.

In the lecture hall, only Professor Zhang Zhenhua and Chen Youhua remained.

Professor Zhang looked at Chen Youhua, his gaze much softer and filled with clear appreciation.

"Student Youhua, your foundation is very solid and your thinking is quite active, far exceeding my perception of a freshman."

He didn't waste any more time on pleasantries and began his assessment directly.

"In the lecture just now, I mentioned the core switching role of the Rho GTPase family in cell migration, where the activation of Rac1 primarily regulates the formation of Lamellipodia at the leading edge of the cell, pushing it forward."

"So, if we overexpress a constitutively active Rac1 mutant in a cell, what changes do you predict will occur in its migration behavior? And why?"
