94: Chapter 93 Proof of the Candidate

The first meeting of the "Candidate Evaluation Team" was held in the virtual consciousness space of the "Cradle". The three-person jury consisted of Professor Chu Yunshen (Humanities and Civilizational Traits), Academician Chen Qiming (Science, Technology, and Consciousness Potential), and Gardener Representative Qi (Builder Protocol and Civilizational Development Perspective). Lin Shen and Sarah attended as confirmed candidates but did not participate in the voting, providing only observational opinions.

The list of evaluation subjects was preliminarily screened to include five candidates:

Max Costa: Former Commander of the Imperial "Zeus Station", with a deep emotional bond with Sarah, representing persistence, the spirit of sacrifice, and the possibility of cross-faction cooperation. His consciousness showed extraordinary stability and empathy depth during multiple resonances with Sarah.

Zhao Yan: Former ace pilot of the Dragon Kingdom, a high-sensitivity volunteer for the "Spark Project", representing courage, discipline, and the ability to adapt and make decisions quickly under extreme pressure. His consciousness has a natural affinity with the Psionic Field.

Dr. Elena Costa: Linguist and expert in Psionic Rhythm, representing communication, understanding, and keen insight into abstract patterns and civilizational symbols. She played a key role in connecting anchor points and cracking harmonics.

Kevin Li: Former software engineer, survivor of an AI event, Consciousness Harmonic tuner, representing resilience in recovering from trauma, intuitive understanding of complex systems, and the future orientation of symbiosis between humans and intelligent agents.

Medical Officer Lu Yunshan: Senior space physiologist and psychologist, representing deep care for life and mental health, a supportive force for maintaining calm in crises, and a clear awareness of human limitations.

"What we are evaluating is not just individual ability," Professor Chu Yunshen stated clearly. "It is the dimension of civilizational traits they represent, and whether these traits can form a beneficial complement and check-and-balance with Commander Lin Shen (rational exploration/leadership) and Dr. Sarah (connection/legacy) when facing a 'Choice' that may determine the fate of the civilization."

Chen Qiming pulled up the detailed resumes, psychological evaluations, and Consciousness Harmonic data of the five individuals from the "Spark Project" and various missions. "From the perspective of pure consciousness stability and potential resonance with the 'Cradle' or anchor point protocols, Zhao Yan and Elena's data are the most prominent. Max has a special bonus effect when resonating with Sarah, but his values are not the highest when evaluated individually. Kevin and Medical Officer Lu's traits lean more toward assistance and support."

The light and shadow of Gardener Representative Qi swept over the data: "the builders civilization emphasizes 'diversity' and 'dynamic balance'. A healthy, potential civilization should have a leadership core (or candidate group) that reflects this diversity. The third candidate may not need to be the strongest in 'technological affinity' or 'protocol resonance', but rather someone who can complete the 'perspective' that the first two might lack."

"For example?" Lin Shen asked.

"For example, the ultimate manifestation of 'civilizational collective will' or 'individual value and sacrifice'; for example, the ability to make a choice that goes against pure rational calculation but conforms to some higher ethical or emotional principle even in absolute predicaments; for example, representing the voices of the most widespread and silent groups in a civilization." The Gardener Representative's explanation remained abstract.

The meeting decided to conduct multiple rounds of evaluation, including simulated scenario tests, deep consciousness interviews, and passive resonance tests of the Gaia Network's background harmonics (not actively connecting, only observing the natural reaction of the candidates' consciousness to specific harmonics).

Meanwhile, other preparations for the "Key Insertion" plan were fully underway.

The lunar energy network optimization was presided over by Dr. Zhou Zhe. They established a new Earth-Moon Tidal Energy Collection Array near the "Kunlun" station and began testing an experimental factory for extracting Helium-3 from lunar soil to reserve extra energy for the power upgrade of the "Sanctuary Protocol".

The prototype of the "anchor point one" project underwent its first integrated test in a laboratory with reinforced shielding. This time, the intensity of the simulated "Order Cutting Beam" was increased threefold, and a weak "Law Interference" component was added (based on theoretical simulations provided by the Gardener).

The prototype started successfully, creating a "Law Reference Field Pulse" lasting 5 nanoseconds around the protected area. The simulated beam and interference were effectively neutralized, but the Psionic Lattice of the prototype's core developed fine cracks due to overload, and the cooling system reached its limit.

"The defense was successful, but the durability and continuous combat capability are insufficient," Ouyang Jing reported. "We need to improve the energy buffering materials and heat dissipation design. However, the principle has been verified once again; we are on the right path."

The "East Sea Peak Buffering Scheme" design was completed. Zhou Zhe's team planned to deploy four sets of "Psionic Damping/Shunting Arrays" at the geostationary orbit position corresponding to the East Sea Node and the corresponding point on the far side of the moon. These arrays would not attempt to stop the peak, but rather set up "buffer pads" and "spillways" on the path where peak energy might leak or trigger spatial disturbances, harmlessly directing it toward the tail of Earth's magnetic field or the open areas on the far side of the moon.

"The scheme cannot guarantee complete neutralization of unknown impacts, but it can reduce the risk of accidental chain reactions," Zhou Zhe explained. The components of the array were being continuously transported to the moon and designated orbits via the shifts of the "Qingtian" passage after its stable operation.

The core display module of the "Greeting" contingency plan was basically finalized, entering the final stage of refinement and multi-modal translation. Professor Chu Yunshen was also guiding the team to transform complex narratives about war, peace, life, and ethics into "civilizational stories" that could be understood by different ideologies.

Outside, the eyes of the monitors did not look away because of human busyness.

The "Scavenger" network and the Gardener's deep space probes simultaneously captured the third, and most obvious, activity of the unknown jumper.

In the shadow zone of an Interstellar Rogue Planet (numbered OU-07) about 1.5 light-years from the Sun, a brief but intense Spatial Fold occurred. After the fold subsided, a tiny perturbation in OU-07's orbit was detected by precision instruments. At the same time, a clear, non-natural "Psionic Beacon" afterglow was left in the airspace where the perturbation occurred. The beacon continuously transmitted in a complex encoding for about three hours before self-destructing.

The beacon encoding was jointly deciphered by Nuwa and the Gardener, and the content was baffling:

"Observation Point: Solar System. Target: Gaia Network (shallow activation signs detected). Potential Inheritor civilization: Humans (ID pending). Evaluation Status: In progress. Associated Protocol: 'sowers legacy Recovery and Redistribution' clause (under dispute). Recommendation: Continue observation, do not intervene for now. Signature: ... (unparseable symbol, suspected ancient civilization identifier)"

"It's them! That hidden observer!" The voice of Gardener Representative Cheng carried a rare fluctuation. "It is reporting the observation to someone... possibly a hidden civilization or organization it belongs to! It mentioned the 'sowers legacy Recovery and Redistribution' clause! This shows that besides the 'Pruning Faction' and the Galactic Council, there is a third force eyeing the 'sowers legacy', and they seem to have their own set of 'rules'!"

"It suggests 'not intervening for now'; is that good news?" Minister Li Weimin asked.

"Not necessarily. 'For now' means they are waiting for a certain opportunity or need more evaluation data. Moreover, they have labeled humans as a 'potential Inheritor civilization', which could be a 'protective' label (implying this civilization is already bound to the legacy and subject to certain ancient clauses) or a 'for sale' tag." The Gardener Representative analyzed. "The key lies in what 'clauses' they follow and what 'judgment' they will ultimately make."

Yet another "referee" acting according to unknown rules. Humanity felt as if they were in an arena with multiple referees, each with different and opaque rules.

Candidate evaluation entered the final round: simulated "Choice" scenarios.

The five candidates were placed in highly immersive virtual scenarios, facing civilizational-level dilemmas with no perfect answers. The scenarios were adapted from crisis cases in the s-07 protocol and extreme events in human history.

Max faced the classic Trolley Problem of "sacrificing a few to save many," but the scenario was scaled to a civilizational level, and the "few" included people vital to him. He needed to make a choice and explain his reasoning.

Zhao Yan faced the choice of whether to trust a flawed but hopeful ally in a desperate situation or to make a high-risk, independent breakout.

Elena faced the task of cracking an ancient protocol that could bring great power but also lead to unknown disasters; she needed to decide whether to attempt to "awaken" it under incomplete information.

Kevin faced a society where human consciousness and strong AI were gradually merging; when some individuals voluntarily gave up their independent consciousness in exchange for "higher efficiency," he had to decide as a manager whether to allow it.

Topologist faced the challenge of how to formulate a life screening and continuation plan to sustain the spark of civilization in a Generation Ship with absolute resource scarcity.

Their choices, thinking processes, and post-event reflective statements were all recorded in detail and evaluated by the jury.

At the same time, their consciousness was guided to a special "Resonance Chamber," where processed Gaia Network background harmonics (mainly those frequency bands related to "balance," "choice," and "legacy") were played. Instruments recorded their unconscious harmonic response patterns.

After all tests were completed, the jury deliberated behind closed doors.

Lin Shen and Sarah waited outside. Max appeared calm, but there were ripples deep in his eyes. Zhao Yan still stood straight. Elena was deep in thought. Kevin looked a bit tired. Topologist carefully reviewed his own test records.

A few hours later, the virtual meeting space opened again.

Professor Chu Yunshen announced the result on behalf of the jury:

"After a comprehensive evaluation, considering individual traits, consciousness resonance, civilizational dimension representation, and complementarity with the first two candidates... the jury recommends Dr. Elena Costa as the third 'High-Level Candidate'."

Elena was slightly taken aback. Max let out a soft breath, whether of relief or regret. Zhao Yan nodded. Kevin and Topologist cast congratulatory glances at Elena.

"The reasons are as follows," Academician Chen Qiming added. "Dr. Elena has shown excellence in communication, understanding, pattern insight, and intuitive grasp of complex systems (such as Gaia Network harmonics). Her traits can complete the roles of 'decoder' and 'translator' beyond Commander Lin Shen's focus on macro strategy and Dr. Sarah's focus on protocol connection. In simulated scenarios, she demonstrated the prudent wisdom of finding a subtle balance between risk and opportunity, which highly aligns with the impartial and insightful ability required for the 'Choice'. Her Consciousness Harmonics also showed the most significant natural resonance with the 'balance' and 'legacy' frequency bands."

Gardener Representative Qi finally said: "She represents the power of 'understanding' and 'communication' in a civilization—understanding ancient legacies, communicating with different existences, and identifying order in chaos. This is crucial for facing the abstract trials that may appear in the Sanctuary of Choice."

Elena accepted the result, her gaze firm. "I will do my best to live up to this trust."

The third candidate was determined.

The final piece of the "Key Insertion" plan was in place.

Only waiting for the right moment to insert it into the keyhole and turn the door leading to the unknown and hope.
