331: Teacher Lin
Teacher Hu Xian's standard for judging whether a boy was honest was very simple: she had been beautiful since she was a child, and the gazes of the men around her, from teenagers to men in their fifties, were never pure.
But when Lin You looked at her, his eyes were clear, his smile was clean, and there was no difference from how he looked at anyone else.
If Lin You knew what Teacher Hu Xian was thinking, he would definitely feel that being thirty-five didn't matter; if you didn't understand, you just didn't understand.
When looking at a woman, first look at her eyes. If you find that her eyes are not looking at you, then... you can look wherever you want.
The three of them sat in the hotel lobby chatting for a while. The high-speed rail tickets were for a little after 2 PM, and it was not yet 11 AM, so there was plenty of time.
It was clear that everyone in the group, including Teacher Hu Xian, was very happy.
Lin You wasn't actually very excited. The proof of legendres conjecture had been certified by the System and was bound to become the first brilliant academic achievement of his life. In just a few months, Lin You would become the most dazzling figure in the university circle and even the academic world.
With such an achievement as a foundation, looking at the Higher Education Press Cup of the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Contest seemed somewhat "ordinary."
However, Lin You was not a spoilsport. He happily followed the three of them, chatting about topics related to the competition.
Perhaps because of the change in environment, or maybe because the Higher Education Press Cup was within reach, Teacher Hu Xian seemed a bit more "down-to-earth" than she was that night she treated them to barbecue.
She didn't seem like a glamorous Associate Professor of the Mathematics Department, but rather a slightly older sister.
"After this competition, if you have any issues in the future, whether related to studies or life, or any confusion, you can come find me."
An Associate Professor around thirty-five years old was not an overly exaggerated position, but for students, it was already a high-quality connection.
You Xinyue and Wang Chun looked happy, only nodding vigorously, not daring to say too much.
Teacher Hu Xian had always been a bit cold and didn't have a great temper, which they all knew. This time, they were benefiting from Lin You's influence, and it would be unfavorable if they said anything inappropriate.
"Teacher Hu, are you familiar with Number Theory?"
Hu Xian nodded, "Number Theory is my main research direction."
Lin You couldn't help but smile internally, thinking, "Teacher Hu, you still need practice. In Professor Zheng's eyes, the strongest person in the Number Theory field at Nandu University is currently Professor Qi."
Lin You played to her interests and started chatting with Hu Xian about research in the field of Number Theory.
Due to the [legendres conjecture], Lin You had studied a large number of Number Theory-related journal papers. Although he wasn't a master in Number Theory, he was definitely considered to have entered the inner sanctum and gained some insight.
Hu Xian was thirty-five and unmarried, appearing to have dedicated her life to mathematics. Lin You chatting with her about her specialization was exactly what she needed to hear.
You Xinyue and Wang Chun listened with wide eyes for a while, exchanged glances, saw the clear stupidity of having zero knowledge retained in each other's eyes, and silently pulled out their phones together.
Abba abba abba, phones are much more fun than math!
For lunch, after the four checked out, they went together to a beef hotpot restaurant in Haidian District.
Teacher Hu Xian paid the bill again. The four ate until their bellies were full, bringing a perfect end to their interview and defense trip to Beidu City.
A little past one, Lin You and Hu Xian bid farewell to You Xinyue and Wang Chun, and the two of them set off together for the high-speed rail station.
When Lin You suggested returning to Nandu City early last night because he had something to do, Teacher Hu Xian did not hesitate and offered to travel with Lin You.
As for You Xinyue and Wang Chun, they had obtained three days off for the Beidu City interview and defense, and the day after tomorrow was the weekend. They wanted to take this opportunity to enjoy sightseeing in Beidu City before returning to school on Sunday.
Although Teacher Hu Xian had always been aloof and serious, she was not the type of teacher who interfered with students' private affairs, allowing the two of them to make their own arrangements.
Once on the high-speed rail, they were still in the business class seats. Lin You originally wanted to lie down and rest for a while to conserve energy, as he was going to make a "brilliant appearance" at Dongda University that evening.
However, Teacher Hu Xian did not give Lin You this opportunity and kept him engaged in academic discussions for the entire journey.
Most male teachers his age had impure gazes, while older professors had generation gaps that made communication less casual. For Hu Xian, having such a good academic partner like Lin You was truly a treasure.
During the three-and-a-half-hour high-speed rail journey, Hu Xian barely stopped talking for a moment. Lin You could feel her pure passion for mathematics.
When Lin You was establishing the progress bar for the first mathematical entry, he only had utilitarian thoughts about mathematics. But as he pushed the progress bar of that first entry to 100%, he continuously felt a sense of accomplishment and perceived the beauty of mathematics.
Mathematics was no longer a simple tool for advancing his education.
This was a field he was willing to dedicate his entire life to pursuing and exploring.
After getting off the high-speed rail and into Hu Xian's car, just as Hu Xian dropped Lin You off at the Dongda University campus, she suddenly asked, "Lin You, Professor Zheng is about to retire. Are you really not considering becoming my student?"
Lin You grinned, "Teacher Hu, you must have heard: I'll graduate with my bachelor's degree next June and start my postgraduate studies. Plus, I probably won't be in the master's program for long, and getting a Ph.D. will just be a formality. Actually... I've already proven legendres conjecture."
Seeing Hu Xian's sincerity, Lin You responded sincerely, informing Hu Xian about the legendres conjecture matter.
Perhaps the first time Hu Xian tried to "poach" him, it was somewhat playful and teasing, but this time, Lin You saw that she was genuinely inviting him, and Lin You was unwilling to be evasive with a teacher who purely loved mathematics.
With the System, it didn't matter who he followed; Lin You could achieve great things regardless.
However, Professor Zheng valued Lin You since he was in grade 12 and accepted him as his final disciple. Although this teacher-student relationship wasn't purely a debt of gratitude for recognition, it was equally rare and precious.
How could Lin You be the kind of shallow male student who would be poached midway by a beautiful teacher?
"What?! You proved legendres conjecture!!!"
Hu Xian's voice rose several times. One was in the driver's seat and the other in the passenger seat. In her excitement, Teacher Hu Xian couldn't help but lean toward Lin You's position, and the seatbelt acted as the ultimate oscilloscope.
Lin You kept his eyes straight ahead, focusing his gaze on Hu Xian's eyes, struggling to maintain his composure and only glancing around with his peripheral vision.
I, Lin You, must maintain my persona at the School of Mathematics, Nandu University!
The number of people in academia who claim to have made major breakthroughs every year is countless. Lin You wasn't afraid of spreading this news. South Korea even claimed to have solved room-temperature superconductivity a couple of years ago... Compared to room-temperature superconductivity, legendres conjecture seemed ordinary.
Lin You continued, "Yes, Teacher Hu, I wouldn't lie to you. My paper has already been approved by Professor Zheng and Professor Qi and submitted to Annals of Mathematics."
Professor Zheng is an Academician, and Professor Qi is the number one authority in the Number Theory field at Nandu University. With these two certifications... Hu Xian was silent for a moment after her excitement, and then she showed a relieved smile.
"It seems I'll have to start calling you Teacher Lin in a couple of years."
