Chapter 84 Jia Shu, please take good care of my eldest niece!
Greentown Rose, a long-established villa complex in Hangzhou.
It consisted of 18 detached houses.
Numbered from 18 down to 1, the lower the number, the larger the area. Number 1 was the 'King of Buildings'.
The Kan Family lived in Villa No. 7, which had small front and back gardens and an independent guardhouse.
The Kan Family must have notified them in advance, as Ling Yue's party only had to perform a simple registration at the guardhouse before passing through without hindrance.
Carrying two fish and a shopping bag, she stood outside the iron gate and rang the doorbell.
A moment later, Kan Jiashu came trotting out to open the door.
Today, he wore a hoodie paired with casual pants. His hair wasn't deliberately styled, and a stubborn tuft was still sticking up. He looked completely relaxed, a far cry from his elite professional attire, appearing much more down-to-earth.
He pulled open the iron gate, his gaze falling first on Ling Yue before immediately spotting a large white bucket by her feet. "What's this?"
The fish in the bucket seemed to know their end was near, flopping twice as if to declare war on the person outside.
Kan Jiashu's mouth hung slightly open. "You went fishing?"
Ling Yue smiled proudly. "It was quite a bountiful harvest."
Kan Jiashu immediately thought of his social media feed, which was always open to his friends. If it were anyone else, they would probably have bought a few fishing rods to cater to his father's interests, but she had gone straight to the source and brought the fish she caught herself.
They passed the fountain and flower beds and entered the villa through the double doors.
The interior was decorated in a classic European style.
While changing her shoes at the entrance, Ling Yue heard the sound of a television.
She followed Kan Jiashu into the living room and saw a middle-aged man with graying temples sitting on the sofa, intently watching Animal World.
He wasn't looking at company financial reports or similar documents?
"Dad, my friend is here," Kan Jiashu called out casually.
The middle-aged man slowly turned his head. His features were thirty percent similar to Kan Jiashu's. Perhaps because he had held a high position for many years, his face naturally carried a hint of sternness.
He quickly scanned Ling Yue and curled his lips into a smile. The soft expression happened to soften the sharpness in his gaze. "Ling Yue, right? Sit anywhere, make yourself at home... Eh?"
What was that smell?
A veteran angler's nose was indeed sharp.
He sat forward slightly and happened to see the large white bucket Zang Lanyi was carrying.
Ling Yue organized her thoughts. "I took my team for a group outing this morning. There was a wild water area there, and it just so happened that my driver is a veteran angler. He taught me how to fish."
"I didn't expect to catch a small bucketful on my first try."
"I saw Kan Jiashu's posts and learned that you also like fishing, Uncle Kan, so I just brought them all. They say people who know how to fish also know how to cook it. I wonder if I'll have the good fortune to taste your cooking today?"
Just as the words left her mouth, something rushed forward.
Ling Yue looked back and saw Mr. Kan with his hands behind his back, staring at the big white bucket with glowing eyes.
Zang Lanyi put the bucket down and lifted the lid.
Mr. Kan clicked his tongue twice and looked at Ling Yue with envy. "Not bad, young lady! Your luck is incredible! Let me tell you, you've come to the right person for eating fish!"
He called the chef over. "Use the head of the Bighead Carp for soup and make fish balls from the body. Braise this little Carp, and grill the Grass Carp with spices—no, make it black bean flavored."
"Oh, and put that largest Carp in the tank for me. I'll invite some friends over to eat it in a few days."
The chef took the bucket to the kitchen.
Ling Yue had initially worried that these fish were too common and that Uncle Kan, who had seen all kinds of luxury, might look down on them.
Now it seemed her worries were unnecessary. Who was to say a big shot couldn't have simple hobbies and enjoy ordinary fish?
When Mr. Kan looked up again, his smile was full of sincerity. "Where did you catch these?"
Kan Jiashu looked helpless. His father was the resolute Chairman Kan in public, but in private, he was just a humble old man who asked everyone for fishing spots.
Ling Yue said, "The place is quite remote. My driver said it's his secret base and wouldn't let me tell anyone."
"Oh, Xiao Yue, am I 'anyone'?" Mr. Kan patted his chest. "You're Jiashu's friend, so you're like half a niece to me. From now on, call me Uncle Kan. Don't be so formal!"
Things were progressing this fast?
Ling Yue looked at Kan Jiashu, who shook his head with a wry smile. "This is my dad's true colors."
Mr. Kan ignored his son's sarcasm and subconsciously held up three fingers. "Don't worry, I promise not to bring any outsiders! I'll go there secretly by myself."
Ling Yue shook her head. "I can't make that decision."
Mr. Kan grew anxious. "Your driver must have come too, right? Where is he? I'll go ask him myself."
Without waiting for Ling Yue to answer, he muttered to himself, "The driver must be parking. I'll go find him in the garage. Xiao Yue, make yourself at home. I'll be right back. Jiashu, take good care of my big niece!"
With that, he disappeared through the doorway.
Kan Jiashu rubbed his brow and said awkwardly, "My dad is like this. Aside from work, his only hobby is fishing. He's a bit obsessed."
"Be careful, he'll likely drag you along. You'll sit there for hours, get your legs covered in mosquito bites, and won't even be able to wear dresses."
Kan Jiashu leaned back casually on the sofa. It was clear that the rules in the Kan Family were not that strict.
Ling Yue sat down and took a few gulps of the tea the maid had brewed for her. "It's fine. At worst, I'll give my driver a day off and let the two of them compete. I won't let my guy go easy on him."
"By the way, Uncle Kan's heart should be fine, right?"
Kan Jiashu chuckled. "If he loses, he'll only want to take the winner as his master."
He certainly had a strong mindset.
Mr. Kan's departure at this time was also a deliberate move to give the young people some space.
When elders are around, the younger generation is bound to feel somewhat constrained.
Facing Kan Jiashu, Ling Yue indeed felt no pressure. "The wristwatch I'm giving you—see if you like it."
Kan Jiashu took the gift box handed to him by Cheng Jiao and opened it. A smile curled on his lips. "What a coincidence, I happen to not have this model."
He immediately took off his old watch and put on the new one, waving it in the air. "Not bad, it matches my outfit today quite well. I like it! Thanks."
As he spoke, he put the old watch in the box and had the maid take it away for storage. He had no intention of taking off the new one.
Ling Yue smiled and brought the conversation back on track. "What kind of person is the owner of the manor?"
Kan Jiashu rested his left hand on his leg and stroked the watch face with his right. "Easygoing, even a bit casual. Very easy to get along with."
"I have a question. Why would someone want to sell a property as massive as a manor?"
From what she knew, manors were usually kept as ancestral homes to be passed down through generations.
Cheng Jiao had looked into it, but the family's privacy measures were too thorough to find the specific reason for the sale.
Being in the same circles and on good terms with the owner, Kan Jiashu knew a thing or two.
"Their internal family relationships are complicated. I only know that when his grandfather passed away, he left a will stating that he could only receive his portion of the inheritance if he got married."
"However, he's a staunch bachelor and has been rebellious since he was a kid. He probably doesn't intend to marry just for an inheritance."
"He has his own business, which is separate from the family enterprise. It's possible his current venture is facing a liquidity crisis, so he had to resort to selling property."
Ling Yue was shocked. "The manor doesn't count as part of the inheritance?"
Kan Jiashu shook his head. "His parents divorced when he was young, and his father died of illness when he was ten. His grandfather doted on him. That manor was his eighteenth birthday present; it has always been his private property."
Holy moly.
Great families were truly on another level.
An eighteenth birthday present was an entire manor!
Ding-dong, ding-dong!
At that moment, the doorbell rang again at the main gate.
Kan Jiashu looked back toward the entrance. "That should be him."
