Chapter 17: The Calm Before the Silk
The victory over the Stonehide Gorger solidified their strategy. For the next stretch of time, Adam and Noodle became specialists. Adam’s Hunter’s Sense was now fine-tuned to find creatures with earth-based abilities. Their world became a hunt for specific vibrational signatures and the scent of damp stone and deep soil. They sought out and defeated Graniteback Lurkers for their defensive fragments, which merged with his Scale Fortification, pushing it to Level 5. They ambushed Quake-runners, fast, rodent-like creatures that could create minor tremors, slowly but surely filling the Tremorsense fragment.
The battles were less about brute force and more about precision. Adam would engage, using his agility to draw attacks and create openings, while Noodle would be a constant, teleporting nuisance.
The little Voidspalk Kitten had become a master of tactical distraction, appearing to claw at a monster’s eyes one moment and vanishing before a retaliatory strike could land, only to reappear behind it to bite its tail.
The final fragment for Tremorsense came from a massive, slow-moving Basalt Beetle. As Adam consumed it, the change was immediate and profound. His Prey’s Tremor skill dissolved, seamlessly merging into the new, superior ability.
[ Skill Fragment Complete! ]
[ New Skill Acquired: Seismic Sense (Passive) - Cost: Low Mana ]
Effect:A constant, 360-degree perception of your surroundings through vibrations in the ground and air. No longer requires physical contact. Range and clarity are superior to Prey’s Tremor.
The world opened up to Adam in a new way. He no longer needed to press his jaw to the ground; he could feel everything. The skittering of insects fifty feet away, the steady drip of water from stalactites, the deep, slow breathing of something colossal slumbering far below. It was like gaining a new, all-encompassing sense.
Their relentless, focused hunting paid off in raw power as well. After a grueling but successful hunt against a pair of Quake-runners, twin notifications bloomed in his vision.

[ Total Evolution Points: 486/1000 ]
Two levels in quick succession! The surge of energy was immense. He felt his body lengthen, his muscles thicken, his mana pool expand. He was now Level 15, a significant milestone. He had two new Skill Points to spend.
It was time to visit the Shop.
He found a secure niche, Noodle curling up contentedly in his lap after happily storing their latest haul. Adam willed the Shop interface open. It had expanded once more, offering new, more powerful options.
[ Available Purchases - Skill Point Section ]
> Skill: Mana Core (Passive) - Cost: 3 SP- Slightly increases your base Mana pool and improves mana regeneration rate.
> Skill: Venomous Bite (Passive) - Cost: 2 SP- Increases the damage of your initial bite attack, in addition to venom effects.
> Skill Upgrade Token - Cost: 1 SP- Instantly levels up one of your existing skills by 1.
[ Available Purchases - EP Section ]
> Attribute Point - Cost: 75 EP
> Skill: Earthshaker (Active) - Cost: 400 EP- Unlocks the full skill from your fragment. Slam the ground, creating a damaging shockwave in a small area. (Cost: High Mana)
His eyes widened. He could outright buy the Earthshaker skill! But 400 EP was a huge chunk of his savings. He also really needed to address his mana constraints. His Crystal Shard Shot and Mantis Slash were powerful, but a few uses left him drained.
He made his decision. He needed a stronger foundation before adding another high-cost active skill.
He spent 3 SP to purchase Mana Core. A warm, expansive feeling bloomed in his chest as his internal mana reserves grew and he felt a faint, constant trickle of regeneration.
[ Mana Core (Lvl 1) Acquired! ]
With his last Skill Point, he purchased a Skill Upgrade Token and immediately used it on his new Seismic Sense, pushing it to Level 2. The range of his passive perception increased noticeably.
He then looked at his EP. 486. He decided on a balanced approach. He spent 225 EP to buy three Attribute Points, putting one into Strength (17 -> 18), one into Vitality (21 -> 22), and one into Agility (24 -> 25).
Reaching Agility 25 was a rush. He felt lighter, faster, his movements becoming even more fluid. He was now officially at the prerequisite for the next stage of his Membrane Wings. He could feel the potential for true flight itching under the skin of his wings, waiting for his next evolution to unlock.
He saved the remaining 261 EP. The Earthshaker skill would have to wait. For now, he was stronger, tougher, faster, and had the mana to sustain longer fights. His senses were sharper than ever.
He looked down at Noodle, who was sleeping soundly. Then he looked out into the deep dark, his Seismic Sense painting a vivid picture of the dangers and opportunities that lay ahead.
"The foundation is set," Adam thought, his resolve iron-clad. "The next evolution is within reach. It’s time to start hunting for the big prizes."
The deep dark had become a familiar, if not friendly, place. Adam and Noodle moved with a synchronicity that was second nature. His Seismic Sense painted a constant, vibrant picture of their surroundings, allowing them to flow through the tunnels like water, avoiding the territories of the truly ancient behemoths they could feel slumbering in the depths.
It was during one of these routine patrols that his senses picked up something... out of place. A pack of sleek, panther-like creatures with fur that drank the light. Void-Fang Panthers (Level 13). He’d fought one before, up on the higher levels. Their presence here, in the deep dark, was unnerving. They were skittish, their movements frantic, as if they were being herded.
"They don’t belong here," Adam thought, his instincts screaming. "Something must have driven them down."
But a hunter couldn’t ignore easy prey, especially when it carried a fragment he coveted. He and Noodle set a perfect ambush in a narrow canyon. As the lead panther passed beneath their perch, Adam dropped, his Mantis Slash severing its spine before it could even react.
The rest of the pack scattered, but one, blinded by panic, charged straight at Noodle. With a defiant "mrrrow!", Noodle Void Stepped onto its back, and Adam finished it with a swift constriction.
Consuming them finally completed the elusive fragment.
[ Shadow Pounce Fragment: 1.0/1.0! ]
[ New Skill Acquired: Shadow Pounce (Active) - Cost: Moderate Stamina ]
Effect:When emerging from deep shadow or camouflage, your next physical attack’s speed and power are dramatically increased.
"Perfect for an ambush predator," Adam grinned. This synergized perfectly with his entire kit.
Their next target was a lumbering Crystalback Crawler, a creature they now handled with efficient, practiced ease. The fight was short. Consuming it yielded the last of the Chitin Fracture fragments.
[ Chitin Fracture Fragment: 1.0/1.0! ]
[ New Skill Acquired: Chitin Fracture (Passive) ]
Effect:Your attacks, particularly Mantis Slash and your bite, gain increased armor penetration, especially against hardened carapaces and chitin.
Feeling invincible, Adam decided to clear out a minor nuisance—a nest of Cave Glow-Pedes. It was trivial work, and the final consumption completed the long-dormant fragment.
[ Bio-luminescence Fragment: 1.0/1.0! ]
[ New Skill Acquired: Bio-luminescence (Active) - Cost: Minimal Mana ]
Effect:You can cause your scales to glow with a soft, controllable light.
"Well, that’s... utterly useless for me," Adam thought with a mental sigh. "I’m a stalker. Why would I want to glow in the dark? But hey, free skill, I guess. Maybe it’ll scare something eventually."
He was about to suggest to Noodle that they find a place to rest when his Seismic Sense screamed.
It wasn’t a vibration he could identify. It was a silence. A void where the constant, faint vibrations of the deep dark simply... stopped. Then, a new tremor began. It was a rapid, skittering, multi-legged rhythm that made the very stone hum. It was coming from the direction the Void-Fang Panthers had fled.
A wave of primal, instinctual terror washed over him, so potent it bypassed his Iron Will. It was the fear of a fly seeing the shadow of the swatter.
From the same tunnel the panthers had used, the other dungeon monsters came pouring out. Not just the Void-Fangs, but creatures he’d never seen—a multi-horned beetle the size of a small car, a serpent made of shifting gravel, all of them ignoring each other, their sole purpose to escape what was behind them.
They were fleeing in a blind, terrified stampede.
"Noodle! UP! NOW!" Adam didn’t think. He coiled and leaped for the highest wall, his Gecko’s Grip latching on. Noodle Void Stepped instantly to his side, trembling violently, his fur standing on end.
The skittering grew louder, a sound like a thousand swords being sharpened at once. Then, it emerged from the tunnel.
It was a spider. But the word "spider" was a pathetic, inadequate description for the reality of it. Its body was the color of bleached bone, wider than the tunnel it exited, its eight legs like polished obsidian pillars that punched deep into the stone with each step. Its abdomen was grotesquely large, dragging behind it, and its multiple eyes were pits of intelligent, ancient malice. A name, written in blood-red system text, seared itself into Adam’s vision, a title, not a level.
[ The Arachnowyrm ]
This was no mere monster. This was a Dungeon Lord.
A calamity.
It didn’t even glance at the fleeing monsters. One of its smaller forelimbs, still larger than Adam, lashed out with impossible speed, impaling the massive gravel-serpent and dragging its writhing form towards a fanged maw that yawned open beneath its eyes.
Adam held his breath, pressing himself and Noodle against the wall, his Deep Camouflage active, praying to any god that might be listening that it wouldn’t look up.
The Arachnowyrm finished its snack and took another step forward, its gargantuan form blocking their only known way back up. It was heading deeper into the territory Adam and Noodle had just been hunting.
They were trapped. Behind them was the unknown, terrifying deep dark. In front of them, a creature of legend that treated other apex predators as light snacks.
The Arachnowyrm paused, its head tilting slightly. One of its massive, dark eyes seemed to sweep across the wall where they were hiding.
Adam’s blood ran cold.
