Chapter 69: Monsters That Creep in the Dark
Adam managed to gently untangle himself from Ignis’s enthusiastic, scaly hug, though her tail continued to thump against the cavern floor like an excited puppy’s. "Alright, alright, let’s see it. But carefully. We don’t want to bring the ceiling down on Alice," he said, nodding towards the still-churning sphere of void.Ignis bounced back, her fiery eyes wide. «Okay! Watch this!» She took a deep breath, her chest glowing like a forge. Instead of the previous cone of fire, she exhaled a focused, spiraling Sun Lance—a brilliant beam of condensed solar energy that shot across the cavern and vaporized a sizable chunk of the far wall with a quiet fwoom and a shower of molten rock. The heat was intense, even from a distance.
She then crouched and unleashed a Cinder Dash, but it was faster and left a lingering trail of shimmering heat that warped the air. She skidded to a halt, panting happily. «And! And! My Molten Armor is way shinier now!» Her scales rippled, glowing with a fierce, protective light.
Adam observed, his Celestial Calculus already analyzing the improved efficiency, heat density, and mana flow of her skills. "Impressive," he rumbled sincerely. "Your control is better, and the power output has increased significantly. That Sun Lance is a formidable ranged attack. Well done, Ignis."
Ignis beamed, puffing her chest out so far she almost tipped over.
A smooth, psychic voice cut through the drake’s pride. «Amazing fireworks, Ignis. But true power is found in subtlety and grace.»
Lilith skittered forward, her new obsidian-and-violet form moving with silent, deadly elegance. She raised one foreleg, and from her spinnerets, she produced not just silk, but Umbral Silk—threads that seemed to be woven from solidified shadow, dripping with a cold, void-like essence. «My webs now drain vitality and mana. My psychic assaults can shatter a mind without touching the body.» She turned her multitude of pale eyes towards Adam, and though her voice remained elegant, there was a clear, expectant edge to it. «Do you not find this new form... compelling, Adam?»
Adam caught the hint. He gave a mental sigh. ’Right. Praise must be distributed evenly to maintain hive harmony.’
"Of course, Lilith," he said, his tone full of appreciation. "Your evolution is remarkable. The aura you project is... profoundly intimidating. Your new capabilities make you a master of control and debilitation on the battlefield. A perfect counterpoint to Ignis’s direct assault. You’ve both grown incredibly strong."
Lilith seemed to preen, a slight, satisfied dip of her cephalothorax. «You are most perceptive.»
«Hey! She is pretty cool!» Ignis chimed in, her jealousy seemingly forgotten in her own happiness. She trotted over to Lilith, looking at her shiny carapace with genuine admiration. «You’re all sparkly and dark now! Like a shiny rock in the night! And your legs are so pointy and cool!»
Lilith regarded the enthusiastic drake for a moment. A soft, almost genuine-sounding psychic chuckle emanated from her. «And you have traded clumsy charm for a more... respectable draconic majesty. Your flames have gained a purer quality. Do try not to singe my new silk, however.»
«I won’t! Unless you want me to!» Ignis replied, entirely missing the warning in the compliment.
The cavern’s tense quiet was shattered by a blur of jagged, multi-limbed motion. It shot from a crack in the ceiling Adam’s Hunter’s Tri-Sense had only just begun to ping—a split-second warning of vibration, a whiff of stale chitin, and a spike of predatory intent.
[ Hexsadder (Level 48) ]
It was a nightmare of angles and hooks. Six barbed legs propelled a flattened, spiny body, with a head that was mostly a circular maw of rotating, bony teeth. It aimed straight for Ignis’s exposed flank, its movement a silent, deadly streak.
But Lilith was faster. She had been waiting in the shadows, her new senses attuned to malice. A whip-crack of her Umbral Silk, dark and sticky, snapped out and tangled the creature’s forelegs mid-pounce.
"Nice one, Lilith!" Adam’s thought was a flash of approval.
«MY TURN!» Ignis roared, spinning and unleashing a point-blank Solar Flare. The explosion of fire washed over the entangled creature, scorching its carapace and drawing a pained, clicking shriek.
Yet, the Hexsadder lived up to its ambush nature. With a sickening tearing sound, it ripped free of the silk—leaving behind two hooked leg segments—and scrambled up the cavern wall with shocking, adhesive speed. It clung to the stone, its maw rotating furiously.
"Is that... some kind of spider-crab abomination?" Adam hissed, coiling for a strike.
The next moments were a chaotic volley. Adam’s Ember Shard Shot peppered the wall where it had been. Lilith’s Mind Spike made it convulse but fail to drop. Ignis’s Sun Lance seared a glowing line across the ceiling as it dodged. It was fast, unnervingly so, taking damage but avoiding anything fatal, always moving, its beady eyes calculating.
Then Adam saw it. The creature wasn’t just dodging randomly. It was herding them, drawing their attacks—and their attention—away from the center of the cavern. A cold dread shot through him.
"Alice!" he roared mentally.
It was a feint. The Hexsadder dropped from the ceiling, not towards any of them, but in a perfect, silent dive directly at the swirling sphere of void that contained the evolving Alice.
Time seemed to slow. Adam saw Ignis’s flame breath turning in the wrong direction, saw Lilith’s silk shooting out but a fraction too slow.
No.
With a thunderous crack of displaced air, he was there, his massive body interposing itself between the descending horror and Alice’s cocoon. His tail, empowered by legendary strength and sheer fury, whipped upwards in a blur.
SMASH!
The impact wasn’t clean. It was brutal, overwhelming force meeting a brittle, armored body. The Hexsadder was smashed into the cavern wall with catastrophic force, its carapace shattering into a thousand wet pieces before it could even utter a final click.

Silence returned, broken only by Adam’s heavy breaths and the faint crackle of Ignis’s cooling flames. He glared at the pulpy remains smeared across the stone.
"What the hell was that thing?" Adam snarled, his voice vibrating with residual rage and adrenaline. "It wasn’t just hunting. It was smart. It tried to use a diversion..." He looked back at the undisturbed void sphere, relief flooding him. "Is everyone okay? Lilith, your silk?"
«Intact, and already regenerating. A fascinating, and irritating, specimen,» Lilith replied, examining the severed hooks left in her web.
«I got it super good with my fire first!» Ignis declared, though her boast was undercut by the worried glance she shot at Alice’s cocoon.
