24: Chapter 24: The Necromancer Fleet Jumps In, Target: The Imperial Fleet's Flanking Position
Before the Necron Fleet's Warp rift had fully opened, all scanners of the Imperial Fleet had already lost their lock on them.
It was not interference, nor was it shielding; rather, the scanning beams were absorbed completely the moment they touched those black metal hulls. There were no reflected echoes, no energy scattering, nothing at all. On the scanner screens, only black outlines remained where they had been gouged out, as if someone had taken scissors and cut holes in a star map.
Tech-Priest Melchior labeled this phenomenon as "complete signal absorption of living metal," and added a small note on the side: "Our sensors cannot track them. We can only determine their course by the starlight they obscure."
Marcus Aurelian stood before the bridge command console, his hands pressed against the edge of the tactical table. His eyes were not on the scanner, but rather counting those gouged-out holes. One, two, three—the number was still increasing. When the sixth hole emerged from the Warp rift, it obscured the light of nearly half the star.
"Withdraw," he said. This was the third time he had issued a retreat order in this campaign. The first was to the 37th Garrison Fleet, which had now become a belt of debris in low orbit; the second was to the Ultramarines, who were still gathering survivors for that strike cruiser pierced by the Leviathan's main cannon; this was the third. Aurelian had never in his life issued three retreat orders against the same enemy. He clenched his jaw, ensuring every word was as clear as iron.
"All fleet, turn about. Target: Mandeville Point. All Warp engines, begin preheating. Ultramarines assault squads and surviving Thunderhawk Gunships must complete recovery within ten minutes—ten minutes from now, we will no longer remain here."
The fleet began to turn. The battle barges expanded their Void Shields to maximum power, the wreckage of the strike cruiser was towed behind the formation, and the Ultramarines' Thunderhawk Gunships flew at full speed from low orbit toward the fleet's recovery window. Their exhaust trails carved dozens of short, bright blue-white arcs in the void, as if the entire expeditionary fleet was struggling with all its might to take its final breath.
The Necron Fleet did not pursue the retreating Imperial Fleet. Three Scythe-class Harvester warships sailed out from the Warp rift, the cold green energy on the surfaces of their hulls flowing slowly through the seams of the ship casings. They unfolded into combat formation on the periphery of the star system unhurriedly, as if the retreat of the Imperial Fleet was merely a footnote not worth the expenditure of energy to them.
The leviathan mothership completed its final attitude adjustment in low orbit. Its main cannon shifted away from the Imperial Fleet's retreat route and aimed in the direction of those three Necron warships. This was a precisely calculated signal—The Swarm did not intend to open fire proactively, but it would not move its weapons away before being attacked either.
The Brood Lord orbital formation converged on both sides of the hive ship, with each Brood Lord entering its designated cover sector. A fixed distance was gradually established between the attack formation of the parasite swarm and the surveillance formation of the Necron Fleet. Tense, yet quiet, like two fronts operating independently without directly colliding.
The Necron Fleet's flagship, the "Eternal Echo," was the first to break the silence. A string of encrypted quantum communications was sent from the communication array of the Eternal Echo, passing through the void and received by the Necron protocol antenna urgently installed on the leviathan mothership. The antenna had not completed full calibration since it was last used, but the decoded message was clear and without noise:
"This is the Royal Expeditionary Third Fleet of the Solemmnace Dynasty, flagship 'Eternal Echo.' We have received encrypted information from the Silent Node 'Nephilak'—the content of the information has been verified. Your civilization assisted in repairing a lost communication link of the Solemmnace Dynasty. According to Article 417, Clause 2 of the Dynasty Code, this action constitutes 'protection and restoration of Dynasty assets,' equivalent to a Tier 2 military alliance obligation."
"Overlord Nephilak Void-Covenant commands this fleet to execute the following terms: First, establish a protected airspace in the orbit of Dead Silence-42 to intercept subsequent Imperial reinforcement fleets. Second, dispatch the engineering ship 'Hammer of Silence' to repair the main temple of the Necron Node Nephilak and restore its full functionality. Third, grant the civilization of The Swarm a strategic cooperative relationship identification code with the Solemmnace Dynasty—codenamed 'Void Covenant.' Fourth—the Overlord himself will meet with you in person upon arrival."
The Dominator completed the analysis of these four terms within the Hive Mind, taking less than a second. A Tier 2 military alliance obligation: not the protection of a suzerain over a vassal, but equal military cooperation terms. In the diplomatic framework the Empire defined for xenos, there was never "equality," only extermination and utilization. The Necrons skipped the entire framework, treating The Swarm as an interlocutor as ancient as themselves. This was more formal than any phrasing used against any living xenos civilization in the Imperial database, and chillingly satisfying to the Dominator.
"Accepted," he replied, simultaneously docking the leviathan mothership's data link with the Necron Fleet to exchange tactical identification signals. This was a formal procedure to incorporate The Swarm into a secure communication channel with a cooperative adversary.
The Brood Queen finished executing the negotiations and attached a supplementary message at the end of the communication record: "Does the Nephilak Node require further biomass or composite materials to assist in the temple restoration?" The Necron engineering ship Hammer of Silence was sailing toward the low orbit of Dead Silence-42. The construction of the black living metal on its hull was unlike any Imperial engineering ship—it had no welding torches, no mechanical arms, only layers of flowing green light scanning back and forth across the surface of the hull, as if searching for the correct repair coordinates. "Negative. The temple structure is intact; living metal damage can be repaired using this ship's regeneration technology." The reply from the Hammer of Silence was businesslike. After a pause of about 0.3 seconds, it added a sentence to the end of the same message, "The effectiveness of The Swarm's commitment to its promises is the first positive reference sample we have received in 62 million years. Repairs will be prioritized."
At this moment, the bridge of the Emperors Hammer was silent as the grave. On the Tech-Officer's observation screen, the Necron Fleet's protected airspace had formed a clear barrier outside the orbit of Dead Silence-42. The auspex on the observation tower marked all identification codes for the black metal warships and the purple Swarm units—the signals of two xenos civilizations were displayed on the same screen as ally markers.
Marcus looked at those markers, the corner of his mouth twitching. He had seen Chaos and xenos form alliances—those corrupted traitors would fight side-by-side with Chaos Daemons. But he had never seen two completely different xenos civilizations, right under the nose of the Empire, mutually recognize each other as allies with completely equal terms. This was not religion, not Chaos, not anything he could understand. This was diplomacy. It was the diplomacy the Empire had never granted them, the diplomacy they had found themselves on the other side of the Galaxy.
"Send this record back to Terra," he said, his voice carrying a weariness he could not even believe himself, "Title: Necron Dynasty and The Swarm civilization have established a formal strategic alliance. The Empire's campaign in the Dead Silence-42 star sector has been terminated. I need the Ultramarines, the Imperial Navy, and the Inquisition central command to sign off on the same report. Priority: Higher than Exterminatus."
The Astropath converted this message into high-energy psychic pulses and sent it to Terra. On the other side of the Warp, the Emperor on the Golden Throne did not respond. But every Imperial agency capable of receiving this message would, on this night, pull out the folder numbered "The Swarm" from their filing cabinets, erase the threat level on the cover from "Sector Level," and change it to a newly defined highest level.
Meanwhile, in the orbit of Dead Silence-42, the Hammer of Silence was descending. As the engineering ship descended into the atmosphere, the regeneration beams at the bow pierced the molten crust surface, illuminating the black stone gate buried beneath the lava and ruins, making it whole once again. The sphere within the temple simultaneously bloomed with cold green network synchronization signals on all hexagonal panels, and countless streams of data poured into its memory banks through the just-repaired antenna.
