35: Chapter 35 What emerged from beneath the temple was not a thunder beast, but a 600-meter-tall behemoth capable of defeating a Titan.
The cold green light patterns spreading from the tunnel entrance grew brighter under Sebastian's gaze. That was not the pulse of the blackstone engine itself—the engine's pulse was rhythmic, once per second, like a heartbeat. This light was continuous, surging up from the depths of the passage, carrying a low-frequency vibration that pressed against the chest. Sebastian's power armor automatically activated audio filters to screen that vibration out of the comms channel. But he could still feel it—not hear it—as the vibration conducted directly into his chest through his armor, through his bones, and through the soles of his boots planted on the creep, originating from deep underground.
"All units, fall back from the temple core area," Sebastian ordered over the comms channel. "Repeat, fall back. This is not something we can handle."
The Terminator veterans began a leapfrogging retreat, providing covering fire. Their Storm Bolters continued to pour fire into the tunnel entrance, but the armor-piercing bolt rounds were like stones dropped into a deep well—no sound of explosion returned, no firelight reflected back. Only that layer of cold green light flickered slightly as the projectiles were swallowed, before continuing to spread steadily outward. The Brood Queen stood beside the tunnel entrance, her orange eyes watching the retreating Ultramarines. She did not pursue. Her posture was one of waiting—not for Swarm reinforcements, but for the Ultramarines to see exactly what was before them with their own eyes.
The creep around the tunnel entrance began to peel away. It wasn't torn by explosions or charred by Lance Weapons; it was being burst open from within. Beneath the creep, segments of carapace heaved through the surface as the vibrations intensified. Each segment emerged coated in a layer of wet digestive fluid, shimmering with a dark purple metallic luster under the cold green light. Sebastian had cleaved through the carapace of a Carnifex in the tomb of Dead Silence-42; he knew the texture of adamantium-chitin. The grain of the carapace before him was more than an order of magnitude coarser than a Carnifex's, and every ridge was embedded with a lattice structure he had never seen before, glowing in synchronization with each pulse of the blackstone engine.
"Bern! Do you see the size of this thing?" Sebastian's vocal cords were tight with adrenaline, but he kept his voice low, biting out every word steadily.
"I see it." Bern's voice lacked its usual fervor, replaced by a coldness Sebastian had only heard from Grey Knights when facing a Greater Daemon. "The blackstone engine's power output jumped by at least forty percent after it woke up—it shares the same power core as the blackstone engine. This thing isn't a separate combat unit; the blackstone engine is its power supply."
Sebastian's gaze swept from the tunnel entrance all the way to the gap in the temple dome. He quickly calculated distances and angles, then spoke into the comms channel: "Orbit. I need a Lance Weapon strike. Coordinates: my current position minus a fifty-meter offset. All firepower. Now."
On the bridge of the Wrath of the Emperor, Marcus Aurelian heard the transmission. He did not hesitate. "All fleet Lance Weapons, lock onto Captain Sebastian's current position, fifty-meter offset. Charge—fire!"
A dozen orange-red Lance Weapons lanced down from orbit simultaneously, plunging through the gap in the Forge Temple's dome and slamming onto the surface of the expanding carapace. The peak temperature of a Lance Weapon could vaporize a Void Shield in an instant and burn through the armor of a Warlord-class Titan in seconds. But as those orange-red beams hit the lattice layer on the carapace's surface, what erupted was not sparks of molten metal, but a thin, nearly transparent ripple of energy. The lattice structure decomposed the Lance energy into billions of scattered beams, conducting them along the ridges of the carapace across the entire body surface, finally funneling them into a cold green interface at the base of the blackstone engine—the Lance energy had been consumed.
When the dust cleared, the carapace was intact. No cracks, no scorch marks, no pits. Only a very thin layer of blue-white residual heat evaporated into steam on the lattice surface, condensing into a few wisps of fine white smoke in mid-air. The ground heaved violently beneath their feet. As the main body of the carapace fully breached the surface, the cold green light patterns exploded in a blinding pulse, throwing every unsecured piece of debris on the temple floor into the air. Sebastian's Terminators shielded their lenses against the glare, and the Ultramarines instinctively raised their weapons, searching for a target to aim at. Then, they saw it.
What rose from the ground was not a Carnifex. It was a head half the size of the temple.
Its appearance was unlike any existing unit of The Swarm. The head carapace was a single curved plate of adamantium-chitin, without eyes, nostrils, or any structure an Imperial biologist would call a "sensory organ." The carapace surface was densely covered in blackstone resonance lattices, each glowing in sync with the blackstone engine's pulse; the entire head was like a silent planet burning with cold flame. Its mouth was not a set of jaws for biting, but twelve symmetrically arranged giant bone blades, each as long as the height of a Knight-class Titan. At the base of the bone blades, some kind of living tissue was embedded, squirming slowly in the cold green light as if calibrating a firing mechanism.
As it rose from the ground, the entire foundation of the Forge Temple shifted. Cracks spread across the walls from the dome to the floor at a visible speed. Massive gears fell from the ceiling, bouncing off the creep and rolling into the piles of Carnifex corpses. After it fully emerged, the blackstone engine's pulse frequency stabilized at a new peak, no longer sounding like a heartbeat—it was more like a continuous low growl, pressing down on the chests of all living things.
Sebastian looked up, the tip of his Power Sword pointing toward the ground. In an incredibly short time, his mind completed target identification and threat assessment. The conclusion consisted of only two words.
"Hive Lord," he said over the open channel, his voice raspy but clear enough. "They used the blackstone engine to hatch a bug specifically designed to counter psykers. It's not for fighting Grey Knights—it's for fighting Titans."
In orbit, Marcus saw the newly appeared biological signal on the tactical projection. The size assessment jumped from four hundred meters to five hundred and was still rising, as it hadn't fully crawled out of the ground. "Maintain continuous Lance fire," he ordered, then turned to the Astropath. "Send a maximum priority transmission to Terra: Ultra-heavy xenos biological unit discovered on the surface of Metallis. Size assessment exceeds all known Imperial Titan-class units. Threat level—Exterminatus-grade is no longer sufficient. Request Warlord-class Titan Legion. Request full Astartes Chapters. Request any relic-grade weapons you can mobilize. The Swarm is turning the blackstone engine into a living war machine. If it is allowed to leave Metallis orbit, the entire Ultima Segmentum will be the next to fall."
On the ground, Sebastian watched as the massive head turned toward the direction of the Wrath of the Emperor. The twelve bone blades slowly spread open, revealing the living tissue inside—it was some kind of focusing array, absorbing the cold green pulses of the blackstone engine, gathering energy. He roared into the comms channel, "Marcus! It's going to fire at the orbit—"
A cold green beam erupted from the bone blade array. It wasn't just a beam, but a pillar of light compressed to the extreme, with a diameter just large enough to cover the main armor belt of a Battle Barge. The beam punched through the gap in the temple dome, through the industrial smog of the atmosphere, through the Brood Lord formations still skirmishing in low orbit, and struck the prow Void Shields of the Wrath of the Emperor with pinpoint precision.
The Void Shields made no sound as they caught the beam. No explosion, no firelight. Three layers of shields were penetrated consecutively within a single second—not punched through, but completely neutralized one-on-one at the quantum level by the blackstone resonance. The residual energy slammed into the prow armor, burning a trench several meters deep into the plasteel hull, piercing the outer casing of the Wrath of the Emperor. It grazed just below the bridge and stopped only one deck away from the main power core.
The Wrath of the Emperor shuddered violently. Marcus was thrown toward the command console, his right shoulder slamming into the adamantium edge with a dull thud of bone. Alarms drowned out all other sounds on the bridge, and the emergency lights on the ceiling had changed from flickering to a steady glow—not because life support was still functioning, but because all safety systems were overloading simultaneously.
"Prow Void Shields—all offline!" the Tech-Officer's voice was almost inaudible amidst the alarms. "Moderate damage to prow armor, main power core undamaged, but—my lord Inquisitor, I recommend retreat!"
Marcus did not answer. He pulled himself upright using the command console, his right arm hanging limp at his side, the pain causing his mechanical eye to flicker with unstable red light in the darkness. He looked at the tactical projection. The creature he had just named the "Hive Lord" was fully emerging from the ground, its total body length finally settling at nearly six hundred meters—adamantium-chitin carapace, blackstone lattice covering its entire body, and a massive, still-pulsating umbilical cord trailing from its tail to the base of the blackstone engine. It was not an independent organism; it was an extension of the blackstone engine itself—the engine had converted the crustal energy of the entire planet into its heartbeat.
"All fleet," Marcus's voice squeezed through his teeth, but every word was like a nail driven into the air of the bridge. "Cover the pride of macragge and all its landing craft for an emergency ascent from low orbit. Lance arrays, cease targeting the ground; concentrate all fire on that new ground unit—don't let it fire a second shot." He paused for half a second, forcing his right hand to lift and brace against the console. "We will not retreat. If we do, the next time we see this system, it will be coming for Terra."
The Lance arrays recalibrated in a very short time. When the second wave of full-power salvos slammed into the Hive Lord's carapace, they left only a thin layer of white smoke. Sebastian looked up at the bone blade array that was still slowly spreading. His Power Sword hung at his side, the ethereal blue of the blade reflected in his expressionless lenses.
