223: General, hello!

At the end of the street where Lin Yan and his group had been sweeping through, three majestic war towers stood tall, like three sharp giant swords piercing the clouds.

This was the guard post for the Second, Third, and Fourth Regiments of the Demon Race's First Army, First Division.

Going straight would lead deeper into the outer regions of the Demon Race's territory within the ancient city.

Turning left or right would lead along the streets bordering the boundary between the Demon Race and the Human Race.

At this moment, the more than one million Demon Race soldiers from the three regiments within the three war towers had incredibly solemn expressions.

Because what appeared in their vision was a surging tide of people sprinting toward them, a terrifying scene of being frantically hunted.

Extreme fear and despair were etched onto everyone's faces.

Some had faces as pale as paper, devoid of any color.

Some had distorted features, their expressions terrified to the extreme.

Others were sprinting desperately, heedless of everything else, just to save their lives.

In this Ancient Starry Sky City where no one but a Great Emperor could fly, this tide-like crowd demonstrated panic and confusion to the ultimate degree.

Suddenly, three muffled thuds of "Bang... Bang, bang..." rang out.

Three majestic armored figures appeared instantly at an incredible speed atop the war towers, which were distributed in a triangular formation.

In an instant.

The Demon Race soldiers of the three regiments seemed to have found their pillars of support and offered respectful greetings one after another.

"General!"

Indeed, the newcomers were the One-Star Great Generals of the three regiments.

Second Regiment, Xi Ku, Eighth Grade Early Stage cultivation, Ninth Grade Early Stage combat power.

Third Regiment, Que Xiong, Eighth Grade Early Stage cultivation, Eighth Grade Peak combat power.

Fourth Regiment, Zhong Erya, Eighth Grade Early Stage cultivation, Eighth Grade Peak combat power.

Three adjutants quickly moved to their respective generals' sides.

"General, shortly after the First Regiment sent out a distress signal, we saw Great General Hang Shao arrive in person."

"But the distance was too great; we couldn't see or sense clearly what exactly happened. We only heard the roars of battle, and shortly after they stopped, this scene appeared."

Hearing their adjutants' reports, the three only nodded slightly, seemingly already aware of the situation.

How could they not know?

The Human Race Supreme One—Lin Yan!

Hang Shao's message before his death had already spread throughout the entire First Army and was rapidly diffusing toward the entire outer region of the Demon Race.

It wouldn't even be long before the entire Demon Race, including the Ten Thousand Races of the Starry Sky, would know.

The three withdrew their gazes from the approaching torrent and simultaneously issued the same command.

"Close the war tower gates tightly!"

As the words fell.

The soldiers of the three regiments, who were already prepared to follow their generals to provide support, all froze in place.

Even the three adjutants suddenly looked at their respective generals, a hint of disbelief flashing in their eyes.

What?

This was an entire street, with at least millions of Demon Race civilians!

Just giving up like that?

It wasn't that the situation of being flagged hadn't occurred before, but every time it was quickly suppressed or even pushed back.

Why this time...?

Sensing their adjutants' expressions, a trace of awkwardness flashed across the faces of the three.

As the only woman among the two men and one woman, Zhong Erya's face turned cold as she spoke first.

"General Yu Chi and General Hu Tu are rushing back from outside the city."

"Our goal is simply to hold the war towers and ensure they are not lost."

Xi Ku and Que Xiong glanced at each other and said nothing, remaining silent.

This reaction caused the eyes of the soldiers from the three regiments to widen in shock, and they finally fully realized the situation.

Yu Chi! Hu Tu!

One was a Great General of the First Army, and the other was a Great General of the First Division.

The fact that both of them were rushing back from outside the city was enough proof that this was not a flagging war like any before.

Could it be that the Human Race had assembled the entire First Army to launch a surprise attack?

Have they gone mad? Are they ignoring the Yao Race on the other side?

Whether the Human Race had gone mad, no one knew.

They only knew that the surging torrent of Demon Race civilians was already nearing the war towers.

"Open the gates!"

Those shrieks of extreme terror resounded through the clouds, as if trying to break through the heavens, rapidly approaching from the distance and deafening to the ears.

"Open the gates! Open them quickly!"

"The Human Race is coming for the kill! Open the gates and save us!"

Accompanied by these heart-wrenching cries, groups of panicked Demon Race civilians came sprinting.

Their faces were full of horror, their eyes wide and round, and their mouths agape, as if trying to vent all the fear from the depths of their hearts.

On the towers, the more than one million soldiers felt a complex mix of emotions upon hearing such cries and pleas.

Despite being battle-hardened veterans, they couldn't help but feel pity facing such a miserable scene.

However, military orders were as immovable as mountains; they could only endure their grief and slowly turn their heads away, not daring to look directly at the desperate faces of those civilians.

If it was indeed as guessed—a sudden and violent assault by the Human Race's First Army—then keeping the war tower gates tightly closed at this moment was undoubtedly the wisest choice.

After all, behind them, there were even more Demon Race civilians who needed protection.

Once the gates were opened, the consequences would surely be even more unimaginable.

Just then, some sharp-minded Demon Race Martial Artists noticed the unusual expressions of these soldiers.

In an instant, they felt as if they had been struck by lightning, and their entire bodies froze in place.

Looking at the closed gates and the soldiers who had heartlessly turned away, their eyes were filled with disbelief, their lips trembling as they squeezed out a few words from between their teeth.

"We... we've been abandoned..."

These words were like a heavy hammer, smashing into the hearts of everyone who had endured untold hardships to escape here.

Suddenly.

A chorus of angry curses erupted.

"F*ck your mothers!"

"Open the gates!"

"Scumbags! Why won't you open the gates? Speak! Open the gates!"

Meanwhile, on the other side of the street.

The scene shifted and transitioned.

Lin Yan looked up slightly at the three war towers with Demon Race flags fluttering at the end of the street not far away, and spoke softly.

"Have everyone retreat to the rear."

"Yes!" Zhang Ling replied immediately.

Then he roared loudly.

"First Regiment! Protect the people!"

His voice rumbled like thunder.

The First Regiment soldiers in front roared in unison.

"At your command!"

Hundreds of thousands of soldiers immediately charged forward in formation, shielding the torrent of Human Race civilians behind them.

"Retreat!"

Seeing this, the Human Race Martial Artists who had been fighting with bloodshot eyes quickly regained a moment of clarity.

They glanced at the three nearby Demon Race war towers without the slightest hesitation.

"Brothers! Retreat!"

"Retreat, retreat, retreat! Follow the orders!"

"That's right! If they're going to storm the towers, we'll just follow them then!"

"This is awesome! No flagging war has ever been this satisfying; we actually fought our way to the intersection without even realizing it!"

The crowd quickly retreated behind the First Regiment's soldiers, casting respectful glances and greetings toward Lin Yan and the others along the way.

"General!"

"Hello, General!"

This scene was witnessed firsthand by the cursing Demon Race civilians beneath the three war towers.

And then.

The cursing grew even louder.

"You god-damned bastards!"

"Look at them! Then look at yourselves!"

"Beasts! You're all beasts!"
