He looked reluctant as if I won’t be able to stomach what he was going to say next."Don’t keep me waiting if you are not ready to say it," I said curtly, my voice sharper than a blade.

He sighed, running his hand through his blonde hair. "Your mother had been treating you with her blood, that is why you were able to wake up from the coma and recover from your sickness."

He paused, studying my expression, when he saw no changes he continued. "The time you ran away from home, something else happened." He walked closer to me.

"Don’t come closer, Rhydian," I warned him.

He stopped in his spot. "Alpha Damon stormed into the palace to take you away, but encountered your mother. They engaged in a deadly fight..."

My hands clutched my dress tightly, as my heart somersaulted in my chest like a bird trapped in a cage.

"... Alpha Damon inflicted heavy wounds on your mother. He claimed that she was the one who took you away from him. Your mother had grown weak from feeding you her blood, and couldn’t withstand the blow from the Lycan. Your mother is dying because of Damon, Aeris. Yet..." his voice broke.

"Yet, you are in his home, protecting him from danger. He is the one who is driving your mother to her death."

I felt my leg weaken. "No... no." I whole my head. Damon would never do that.

"Damon will never do that," I whispered to him, my eyes turning red from the stinging pain in my chest.

"You think I’ll lie to you?" his brows furrowed. "I just confessed my love to you, and at the same time told you that I lied to you. Do you think I’m stupid to come clean to you? Even when I know you might hate me for lying to you, I still came clean. And you think I’ll frame Damon for something he didn’t do? This is your mother we are talking about Aeris!"

I blinked, my mind fumbled, turning clouding. I couldn’t think straight, but I knew deep down Damon would never hurt the people who are close to me.

But then again, what if he was consumed with rage and did what he did?

After all, when I went to the northern side of the wall, he was nowhere to be found. Could it be that he was in the castle fighting with my mom? But why would he fight with her when the castle is heavily fortified? And with my uncle and guards, he wouldn’t have left in one piece? It was not like he had teleportation magic.

’This doesn’t add up, but then again, my uncle didn’t come after me when I ran away, could it be that he was attending to my injured mother? But if she was really injured why didn’t the guards say so?’

’What is true and what isn’t? This feels like an impure particle that needs extreme filtration.’ I shook my head.

I turned to Rhydian. "Thank you for informing me about this, I’ll investigate this matter on my own," I said in a solemn voice.

"You are going to confront him?" His eyes sparkled with an unknown glint.

"Shouldn’t I?" My voice echoed with wariness.

"Yes, you should. But I’ll suggest you keep your cool when you confront him. And I’d rather we leave right now and see your mother." He said in a calm soothing voice.

"I know you are angry right now, but your mother comes first." He whispered, his eyes studying me.

I looked at him, my eyes distant. I have a few days left to live, hoping I could part with Damon on good terms, if I leave for the Fae realm, I might not come back.

If he really did it, then I need to find answers before leaving. "There are things I must take care of."

"If you sort it out, promise me you will leave with me immediately?"

I looked at him, but didn’t utter a word, I turned and strutted out of the barrier.

My heart pounded in my ears as I made my way to Damon’s room.

"Em... Ember." A familiar voice rang from my side.

My eyes hardened when Alaric stepped out of a corner, he looked messy, his hair looked like he had run his hands through a hundred times. His eyes which held teasing and warmth looked cold and serious.

"What do you want Alaric?" I said in a detached tone.

He bit his lips, his eyes lowered. "I’m happy that you are alive, and I’m sorry for not standing up for you on that day."

My lips twitched. "It’s not your fault, you are a Beta and Damon’s best friend, standing against them meant death. I don’t blame you Alaric for the decision you made. At least I won’t carry the burden of you dying because of me."

"But still... I failed to be Hansel and Gretel with you. I betrayed you." His words came out like a whimper. The rıghtful source is ????????????????????~????????????????~????????????

I walked closer to him, and I patted his shoulder. "We are always Hansel and Gretel. Every friendship has its ups and downs. What matters most is that we can come back, what doesn’t destroy our friendship makes it stronger." I smiled at him, even when I knew they didn’t reach my eyes.

He smiled back at me, blowing a sigh of relief as if a heavy weight had been lifted off his chest. "Thank you, Lu... Ember."

I chuckled at his stutter. "I’ll see you later."

He nodded, staring at me as I turned around and made my way down the hallway.

When I entered Damon’s room, it was like someone had opened a portal to the North Pole of the Arctic.

The tension in the air grew thicker the moment my eyes met his.

His eyes were dark as the bottom of the ocean, drawing into their depths.

"Why did you send me away?"

"Why did you hurt my mother?"

We both said in unison.
