43: Chapter 43 Lease Agreements and Luminous Navigation
The silver network within Chen Duo's chest breathed in the darkness.
The light was not constant. It flickered with his heartbeat, forty-eight times per minute, forming a precise duet with the contractions of the nest's fleshy walls. Lin Yuan crouched beside the wreckage of the biological life-support pod, watching as those luminous patterns moved beneath the skin like living creatures, converging into a three-dimensional topological map.
"Warning. This biological signal has been tagged as Asset 08," THRONE-00's voice rang out inside his skull, mechanical like the grinding of rusted gears. "Suggested protocol: Execute on-site disassembly to extract memory data. This is the sub-optimal solution after a 37% efficiency loss."
Lin Yuan ignored the system. He extended his right hand, silver threads spreading from his fingertips and hovering three centimeters above Chen Duo's chest. Those luminous patterns suddenly flashed violently, like a stress response or perhaps some kind of answer. Chen Duo's eyelids quivered, and his pupils moved rapidly beneath closed lids, as if he were browsing through an invisible interface.
A map took shape on the skin.
It wasn't just lines. When Lin Yuan narrowed his eyes, he saw complex three-dimensional structures emerge beneath the skin of Chen Duo's abdomen—pipes, chambers, peristaltic passages, and a path marked with red light points extending from their current position to an exit at the edge of the nest. A string of binary code was annotated beside the path, flickering in time with Chen Duo's pulse.
"He's reading the nest's neural network," Lin Yuan whispered. This wasn't a guess. Chen Duo's fingertips were twitching unconsciously, each twitch corresponding to the refresh of a node on the map. Number 08 had turned this human into a living router; every silver nerve was a fiber optic cable, and every cell was performing data exchange.
Chen Duo suddenly opened his mouth and emitted a series of electronic noises. The sound didn't seem like something human vocal cords could produce; it was more like the dial-up tone of a modem—sharp, rhythmic, and carrying a cold cadence. THRONE-00 immediately attempted to parse it, but Lin Yuan already understood the rhythm. They were coordinates—the precise coordinates of the New Canaan Cathedral catacombs, nested within a string of permission verification codes.
The fleshy walls of the nest suddenly tightened.
It wasn't an aggressive contraction, but a warning. Lin Yuan felt the ground beneath him tremble, and the gurgling sound of flowing liquid came from the distance. Number 08 was awake, or rather, it had been watching all along. Those biomass sensors growing on the walls and the valves rising and falling with breaths all turned toward this direction.
Chen Duo's body suddenly arched, and the silver network spread from his chest to his limbs like a tightening fishing net. A broken series of syllables squeezed out of his throat—no longer binary, but translated human language with a metallic texture, clearly a recording played directly through some neural interface:
"Specimen: Chen Duo. Ownership: ARK-08 Disassembly Plant. Current Status: High-quality raw material/Mobile observation station. Proposal: Leasing agreement."
Lin Yuan stood up straight. His laser gun hung at his waist, its energy indicator showing 7%, which posed zero threat to a bio-engineered entity of Number 08's scale at this distance. He looked around; the blood vessels on the fleshy walls were reorganizing, forming textures similar to display screens, with lines of text spelled out by beads of coagulated blood:
Clause 1: Taking the specimen requires collateral for future debt. Clause 2: Debt content is one 'non-deteriorated THRONE core data package'. Clause 3: A monitoring node is implanted in the specimen's heart; failure to repay on time results in cardiac arrest. Clause 4: Specimen retains real-time data backlink function as a mobile observation station.
"It's testing me," Lin Yuan realized. Number 08 wasn't threatening him; it was evaluating him. This bio-engineer viewed everything as programmable resources, including the negotiation itself. It was observing whether Lin Yuan would think with an engineer's logic or rely solely on emotional reactions.
THRONE-00 issued a warning: "Biological signal intrusion detected. A new luminous structure has appeared in Chen Duo's cardiac region. Recommendation: Reject agreement. Risk coefficient exceeds acceptable range."
Lin Yuan looked at Chen Duo. The latter's skin had completely transformed into a luminous map carrier; those silver lines had even spread to his neck and cheeks like a branded circuit diagram. Chen Duo's eyes were half-open, his pupils a pure silver without focus, but deep within that inhuman luster, Lin Yuan caught a flicker of pain.
It was a remnant of humanity.
"Accepted," Lin Yuan said.
The nest's tremors ceased. After a moment of silence, a bright red light point suddenly lit up at the position of the heart in Chen Duo's chest, like an implanted bomb or a seal. It was the mark of the debt contract, Number 08's claim of property rights.
"Debt confirmed. Term: Undefined. Collateral: Control over specimen Chen Duo's vital signs," the mechanized voice spoke through Chen Duo's throat. "Transport channel opened. Wishing you a successful disassembly, holder of the THRONE-00 deteriorated copy."
A small line of text flashed in THRONE-00's system log at the edge of Lin Yuan's vision: "Number 08 exhibits abnormal interest in the THRONE series. Recommendation: Exercise high vigilance. Command execution efficiency: 63%."
Chen Duo suddenly slid off the wreckage of the life-support pod, and Lin Yuan caught him. The body was terrifyingly light, and something was sliding beneath the skin—not bones, but those silver networks rearranging themselves. Chen Duo's lips pressed close to Lin Yuan's ear, his breath smelling of ozone as a faint string of binary code was whispered into his ear:
"Confessional... Below... Double locks... There is blood... and iron."
Then Chen Duo fell back into a coma, his pulse stabilizing at forty-eight beats per minute, synchronized with the heartbeat of the nest.
The transport channel opened thirty meters away.
It was a two-meter diameter pipe, its inner walls covered in a cuticle layer with regular muscle bundles pulsing on the surface. The mouth of the pipe opened like a sphincter, revealing a dark internal cavity. Lin Yuan dragged Chen Duo toward the entrance, feeling Number 08's gaze—if that massive biological entity had eyes—watching them through every cubic centimeter of the fleshy walls.
"Entering biological ejection pipe," THRONE-00 prompted. "High-pressure liquid energy storage detected. Propulsion expected at three hundred kilometers per hour. Warning: Failure to install restraints may result in skeletal fractures."
Lin Yuan tore off a strap from the life-support pod and bound Chen Duo to his back. Chen Duo's chest pressed against his back, that marked heart beating steadily like a time bomb counting down. He took a deep breath and stepped into the pipe.
Darkness swallowed them.
It began as a slow slide, the mucus-covered walls providing lubrication. Then, the valve behind them suddenly slammed shut, and pressure built up in an instant. Lin Yuan felt Chen Duo's arms tighten—an unconscious physiological reaction. The next second, the hydraulic system activated.
They were launched.
The sensation of weightlessness tore at his internal organs. The pipe contracted beneath his feet at an incredible speed, propelling them forward. Lin Yuan squeezed his eyes shut, feeling Chen Duo's luminous network flickering in the darkness, transmitting a faint navigation signal through the contact with his back: left turn, straight, descend. Number 08 was guiding them, using Chen Duo's body as a beacon.
The pipe walls occasionally became transparent, revealing the scene outside.
It was the surface of the radiation wasteland. Twisted metal wreckage was scattered across the scorched earth—remnants of some warlord's patrol, vehicles burned through by acid, corpses wrapped into mummies by tentacles. Further away, giant mechanical walkers lumbered through the fog, their barrels pointed at the sky but not firing; Number 08's airspace was a forbidden zone.
Lin Yuan counted the heartbeats. After one hundred and twenty beats, the pipe began to decelerate. The valve ahead opened, and the hiss of depressurization sounded like the breath of a great beast. Light flooded in—an artificial cold light with a piercing blue-white hue.
They tumbled onto a stone floor.
Lin Yuan coughed up a mouthful of saliva mixed with radioactive dust and quickly unfastened the strap. Chen Duo lay to the side, the light of the silver network appearing dimmer here, as if suppressed by something. THRONE-00 immediately began scanning: "Environment confirmed. New Canaan Cathedral catacombs. Radiation level: Moderate. Multiple automated defense systems detected. Warning: Adeptus Mechanicus-style automated turret arrays present in the area ahead."
Lin Yuan looked up.
They were in a massive underground space, the dome so high it vanished into the darkness. The walls were grey stone, but embedded with circuit boards and pipes, forming a bizarre fusion of religious murals and mechanical devices. Fifty meters ahead, an iron door blocked the path; carved upon it were not bible verses, but a line of binary code and a line of high gothic:
"The penitent shall use blood and steel as the key."
Chen Duo's fingers suddenly twitched, pointing toward that door. On his chest, that red light point intertwined with the silver network, flickering slowly. Lin Yuan approached the iron door and found two slots for the lock: one was a biometric slot shaped like a palm; the other was a mechanical interface that perfectly matched the size of the stc fragment.
"Dual authentication mechanism," THRONE-00 analyzed. "Requires biological key (Chen Duo's silver blood) and mechanical key (stc fragment) to be input simultaneously. High-energy reaction detected behind the door. Facility is in an active disassembly state. Warning: Traces of third-party intrusion detected."
Lin Yuan looked at Chen Duo. The latter's skin appeared deathly pale under the cold light, the silver network flickering like weary fireflies. Number 08 was monitoring everything through that heart node, waiting for the debt to be repaid. And on the other side of the door, THRONE-01 was waiting, being disassembled by some force, coveted by some existence.
Chen Duo's lips moved soundlessly, repeating those coordinates, that warning.
Lin Yuan took the stc fragment from his pocket, the coldness of the metal stinging his palm. He supported Chen Duo with his left hand and pressed the latter's palm onto the biometric slot. Silver blood seeped from Chen Duo's fingertips and was greedily absorbed by the slot.
The iron door began to rumble.
