82: Chapter 82 The Iron Halo and the Weight of Loyalty

The metal rungs of the maintenance well groaned under the strain. Lin Yuan was carrying Camilla; her weight was lighter than expected, as if half the marrow had been drained from her bones. Lin Chen climbed ahead, the dark red exoskeleton on his left arm showing faint, damp brownish-black rust spots in the darkness. Coolant mixed with blood seeped from the elbow joint, dripping onto the rungs with a faint sizzling sound.

"Thirty meters more." Lin Chen's voice came through the THRONE-01's bone conduction module, carrying the static of metal friction. His left shoulder twitched unnaturally, a symptom of biological rusting spreading to the scapula; the machine spirit was fighting the flesh for neural control.

Camilla lay on Lin Yuan's back, her fingers tightly clutching his tactical vest. Her lower limbs hung down like two pieces of withered wood; sensation below the waist had been permanently frozen at the T12 segment. The toxins of nerve necrosis were being forcibly blocked by Lin Chen's shared bridging, but the cruelty of wasteland medicine had already taken its toll: she would never stand again.

"The Mother is devouring the metal walls," Camilla's voice was raspy. Through the 63% synchronization data link established by Lin Chen, she shared THRONE-01's vibration sensing. "It has adapted to energy weapons and is transforming concrete and rebar into an exoskeleton."

A dull impact sounded from overhead, and concrete debris showered down. The Mother had torn through the dome; that massive sarcoma, fused from scrap metal and organic matter, was squeezing into the maintenance well. Its surface had grown metal serrations like teeth, chewing through the pipes blocking its path.

Lin Yuan quickened his descent. His right-hand Silver-wire Network resonated with his brother's exoskeleton. The pain of level-eight neural burning throbbed at his temples, but tactical calculations took precedence. In a zero-Promethium state, there was no possibility of a stealthy escape; being pursued by The Mother would result in the death of the entire team. Short-term survival was prioritized over long-term concealment.

"Airlock ahead." Lin Chen stopped at the end of the shaft, his fingers touching the rusted control panel. "It requires the Scavengers' core password."

Camilla slid off Lin Yuan's back and propped up her upper body with her hands against the wall. Her face was deathly pale, sweat pinning her bangs to her forehead, but the despair from the tunnel had vanished from her eyes. Lin Yuan had not abandoned her when survival probability was at 18%; the debt was cleared, and now she needed to prove that the value of her loyalty was higher than her old identity.

"I'll do it." Camilla crawled to the console, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She entered the first three sets of passwords, then paused at the fourth, her fingers trembling slightly. She entered a partial password, keeping a fallback option—a qualitative shift from mercenary pragmatism to absolute loyalty, though her tactical calculation instincts remained.

The airlock hissed as pressure was released, sliding open slowly. Behind the door was not the expected corridor, but a massive circular hall. The walls were covered in black and yellow hazard stripes, and the floor was littered with dried bones and rusted equipment. The air was thick with the scent of aged disinfectant mixed with ozone, a smell unique to pre-war medical facilities.

The moment Lin Chen stepped over the threshold, the machine spirit of THRONE-01 suddenly emitted a sharp resonance. He stumbled, the rust spots on his left arm spreading faster. Coolant overflowed from his nostrils, dripping onto the floor to form small puddles.

"This is..." Lin Chen's pupils contracted as the dark red exoskeleton automatically deployed into defense mode. "The emblem of the Imperial Fists."

He walked toward the central wall of the hall, where a massive metal relief was embedded: a golden fist clutching lightning against a backdrop of black city walls. Lin Chen pressed his palm against the relief, and the machine spirit of THRONE-01 resonated with some ancient mechanism inside the building.

Data streamed into the shared network. Through the silver-wire connection, Lin Yuan saw flashing images: a database of individual equipment from the Great Crusade era, an outpost observation station established here by the Seventh Legion, recording a biological experiment project named 'Ark Protocol.' This was no ordinary Adeptus Mechanicus laboratory; it was an abandoned Seventh Gene Farm outpost of the Imperial Fists.

"The STC fragment is resonating." Lin Yuan took out the polyhedral metal piece he had obtained from Rustnail. It was emitting a pulsing blue light, creating a magnetic attraction with the console in the center of the hall.

He walked to the console and inserted the fragment into the interface. The metal piece rotated and unfolded, integrating with the laboratory's main control system. A holographic projection expanded in the air, displaying a complex mechanical schematic: the standard template for an Imperial laser pistol, mass-producible, requiring only basic industrial facilities to cast.

"First mass-producible template unlocked." Lin Yuan's voice was calm, but his right-hand Silver-wire Network glowed slightly with excitement. "But we don't have Promethium energy to start the casting process."

Camilla propped herself along the floor to the console, her gaze scanning a small line of text next to the projection. Her expression changed: "This isn't an ordinary STC. Look here, the terms of use."

A warning in high gothic appeared below the projection: 'Use of this template requires adherence to the Imperial Truth: Purify all non-standard humans (mutants).'

Lin Yuan's brow furrowed. Camilla was a Scavenger; her DNA had mutated in the wasteland environment, carrying radiation-resistant genes, making her exactly what the STC system defined as a 'non-standard human.' This meant that to unlock advanced technology, he would have to purify Camilla.

"Brother," Lin Chen spoke suddenly, his voice distorted by pain but his tone firm, "I sense cryo-pods. On the bottom floor."

The machine spirit of THRONE-01 transmitted new information: there were twelve cryo-pods on the laboratory's bottom floor, containing 'Prototype Astartes' test subjects. The origin of the Scavengers was confirmed here; they were the descendants of failed Astartes modification subjects, abandoned here by the Imperial Fists, breeding for generations in the radiation.

Camilla leaned against the wall, looking down at her sensationless legs. She pulled a pair of medical scissors from her tactical belt and cut open her pant legs. Her lower limbs were a deathly gray, the muscles already beginning to atrophy, with marks of nerve necrosis crawling over her skin like black vines.

"Permanent paralysis," she said calmly, as if stating the weather. The scissors fell to the floor with a crisp clang. She looked up at Lin Yuan, "You said I could switch to a fire support role."

Lin Yuan knelt down and took out spare mechanical parts he had brought from the rusted church. He began to reassemble Camilla's equipment, modifying her lower limbs into a fixed cybernetic fire platform. Metal braces were fixed to her hip joints, servo motors connected to her spine, and interfaces for two heavy Bolters took shape at her knees.

"This will permanently limit your mobility," Lin Yuan said while adjusting a hydraulic valve. "But you can become a fortress."

"I don't need mobility." Camilla grabbed Lin Yuan's wrist, her nails sinking into his skin. "I need a purpose. You gave me a second life, not as a Scavenger, but as your lieutenant. I swear, Lin Yuan, my fire will be directed at your enemies, and my intelligence will light the darkness for you until my core is extinguished."

This was a formal oath of loyalty. The command hierarchy of the three-person squad was established at this moment: Lin Yuan in command, Lin Chen on assault, and Camilla for fire support and intelligence.

But before the echoes of the oath could fade, the entire laboratory suddenly shook. The Mother had struck the outer wall, and the thunderous sound of metal tearing came from all directions. Its metal exoskeleton had grown enough to cut through pre-war alloys.

"Iron Halo defense system." Lin Chen quickly browsed the data obtained from the machine spirit resonance. "It can activate the outer energy shield, but it will emit a strong electromagnetic signal, exposing our location to the Scavengers."

Lin Yuan looked at Camilla. She had just sworn her loyalty, and the choice he faced was: activating the defense system could block The Mother but would draw Rustnail's revenge force; not activating it, and The Mother would break through the wall within three minutes.

"Activate it," Lin Yuan ordered. This was the first time he had sacrificed stealth for speed; he would bear the cost. He recorded this entry in his military log, his right-hand Silver-wire Network flashing.

Lin Chen pressed his palm onto the console, injecting THRONE-01's residual energy into the system. The metal walls outside the laboratory suddenly lit up as rings of golden energy halos rose from the foundation, forming a hemispherical shield. The Mother slammed into the halo, its metal exoskeleton melting from the high heat, letting out a piercing shriek.

Simultaneously, the laboratory's alarm system blared, and red warning lights rotated on the ceiling. The alarm for the Scavenger forbidden zone was triggered; the partial password Camilla had entered exposed their location, and Rustnail's revenge force was mobilizing.

"We're safe for now," Camilla said, adjusting her newly installed fire platform as the servo motors hummed during calibration. "But for no more than two hours."

Lin Yuan looked at the STC template on the hologram and then at Camilla. The system's warning still flashed: Purify mutants to unlock advanced technology. His moral compass and survival needs were in violent conflict at this moment.

"Brother," Lin Chen said suddenly. The rust on his left shoulder had spread to his collarbone, and THRONE-01's machine spirit was showing signs of rejection. A mixture of coolant and blood seeped from the corner of his mouth. "Something is moving in the cryo-pods. Not all of them, but one... a heartbeat signal."

In the cryo-pods on the bottom floor of the laboratory, that 'Prototype Astartes' subject was waking up.

And the STC template in Lin Yuan's hand awaited his final choice: uphold the Imperial Truth, or stand by his humanity.
