108: Chapter 108 The War Emperor and His Daughter and the Invisible Weapon
"...Are you serious?"
Su Bai looked at Researcher Yun Zhi's face, which was covered in graphite powder. She didn't look like she was joking.
"Of course I'm serious." Researcher Yun Zhi pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose, then paused.
The way she was choosing her words made Su Bai feel that she was even more serious than when they were discussing nano-purification just now.
"War Emperor Wei Potian's daughter, Wei Xiaoyu. Fourth-tier peak, SSS-grade Berserker panel."
"Sounds pretty strong."
Researcher Yun Zhi didn't respond.
The silence lasted for about three seconds. Su Bai put down the draft paper in his hand.
"What's the problem?"
"The problem is," Researcher Yun Zhi rubbed her temples, "this young lady is spoiled rotten."
"How spoiled?"
"Her dad is the War Emperor, a ninth-tier powerhouse ranked first on the Global Warrior Leaderboard. From childhood to now, everyone around her has only given her face because of War Emperor Wei Potian—when she wins, they praise her as a genius; when she loses, they say the opponent was too strong. Someone would even lay down a carpet if she tripped. Over the last decade or so, she genuinely believes she is invincible."
Researcher Yun Zhi picked up the water glass on the table and took a big gulp.
"But because she is War Emperor Wei Potian's daughter, no one dares to speak out against her. The Card Creators who made equipment for her in the past were all scolded away. Either she complained the materials weren't high-grade enough, or she complained the design wasn't domineering enough. One Card Creator was scolded by her in front of the entire guild for a full half-hour—just because she didn't like the color of the card's face."
"So no one dares to take her commissions."
"Who would dare? Taking it is just asking for trouble." Researcher Yun Zhi smiled bitterly. "And as luck would have it, the National Competition is coming up soon. She's declared that she can sweep the whole field with just any random fourth-tier card. War Emperor Wei Potian is so anxious he's getting blisters on his lips, but he can't bring himself to tell his daughter the truth."
Su Bai thought for a moment.
"So she has absolutely no idea how much she's actually worth."
"Completely clueless. She lives inside a bubble built by everyone around her. The bubble is covered in 'You are a genius,' 'You are the strongest,' and 'Everyone else is trash.'" Researcher Yun Zhi took off her glasses and wiped the lenses. "If you can pop that bubble—War Emperor Wei Potian will probably kowtow to you."
"I don't need him to kowtow."
Su Bai put the draft paper into his bag.
"I need his daughter to be my Magic Card Master. The rules for the National Competition require a Card Creator to pair with a Magic Card Master to compete, and I'm missing a partner."
Researcher Yun Zhi was stunned for a moment, then revealed a meaningful smile.
"Then we'll see if you can tame this young lady. As for the War Emperor—just go home and wait. Given War Emperor Wei Potian's personality, he'll arrive tonight."
After saying that, her figure disappeared behind the bookshelf.
Su Bai stood there in silence for a few seconds.
"...Fine then."
Anyway, he had originally planned to go back and study the circuit architecture of the Substitute Module. Waiting is waiting, he supposed.
Kyubey poked its head out from his shoulder.
[Su Bai. A ninth-tier powerhouse ranked first on the Global Warrior Leaderboard—what do you think he looks like?]
"I don't know. A two-meter-tall muscular hunk? Covered in golden battle aura? The kind who says 'Young man, you're very brave' as soon as he opens his mouth?"
[Your imagination is very lacking.]
"Mind your own business."
Su Bai grabbed his bag and walked out of the database. The night wind poured in from the window at the end of the corridor, carrying the humid heat unique to early summer in Jinghai City. He took out his phone and glanced at it—the message notifications for the [Three-Person Card-Making Mutual Aid Group] had already piled up to over ninety-nine.
The latest one was from Zhao Dahai.
[Zhao Dahai]: [Su Bai, are you done checking your data yet!! We're still waiting for you at the restaurant!! Your steak is already cold!!]
[Su Bai]: [Coming. Ten minutes.]
He shoved his phone back into his pocket and quickened his pace toward the commercial district.
Halfway through his meal, Su Bai received a message from Researcher Yun Zhi.
[Researcher Yun Zhi]: [I've already contacted the War Emperor. Go home and wait; he'll arrive tonight.]
Below it was an encrypted coordinate.
Su Bai stared at this line of text for two seconds.
"...How does she even know my new home address?"
[The Sanctuary's internal database has your latest address on file.] Kyubey's tail brushed against his earlobe. [The registrant is Li Qingyue. The note says—to prevent the disciple from being assassinated again, close-proximity protection is required.]
"Master is quite thoughtful."
"What are you muttering about?" Lin Xiao leaned over from across the table, still holding a fork in her hand.
"It's nothing, a client is coming later."
"What kind of client visits in the middle of the night?"
"The War Emperor."
The fork slipped out of Lin Xiao's hand and rolled half a circle on the tablecloth. Zhao Dahai almost choked on his red wine.
"The War Emperor?! That War Emperor Wei Potian who is ranked first globally?!"
"It should be him."
"What do you mean 'it should be'—when did you get connected to him?!"
"...His daughter needs a card." Su Bai stood up and picked up his jacket.
Zhao Dahai's expression flickered between "this excuse is too perfunctory" and "but it seems reasonable since it's happening to Su Bai." Lin Xiao picked up her fork and said in the tone of someone who had seen it all: "Call us anytime if you need help."
Su Bai waved his hand and walked out of the restaurant.
Night had completely enveloped Jinghai City.
When Su Bai returned to the mansion, the magic sensor light at the door turned on automatically. He threw his bag onto the sofa, and before he had time to sit down—
Hum.
The air vibrated.
Some kind of more direct force rolled over the air. The window frames emitted an extremely faint hum, and in the water glass on the coffee table, ripples of concentric circles appeared on the surface. Kyubey's ears suddenly stood straight up.
[Su Bai. Ninth-tier magic reaction. Approaching. Speed—]
It paused.
[He is walking.]
"Walking?"
[From three blocks away. He's walking. With every step he takes, the residual magic waves conducted through the ground are enough to make magic sensors within hundreds of meters spike.]
Su Bai walked to the window. Under the distant streetlights, two figures were walking toward this side.
The one in front.
He was over two meters tall, with shoulders as broad as a door panel, short dark brown hair standing on end, and stubble on his face shaved to a bluish tint. He was wearing a faded military undershirt, revealing two arms thicker than Su Bai's thighs. On his feet were a pair of ordinary military boots, and with every step he took, a tiny crack would appear on the asphalt road.
The person ranked first on the Global Warrior Leaderboard. The ninth-tier War Emperor. War Emperor Wei Potian.
He didn't emit any magical pressure, yet just by standing there, he made the air emit an overwhelmed crackling sound. There was only one explanation for that sense of oppression—he was too strong. So strong that he had to deliberately restrain his power at all times, otherwise, the things around him would be crushed by him.
Su Bai opened the door.
War Emperor Wei Potian stood at the door, looking down at him.
This "looking down" wasn't an adjective. He genuinely needed to lower his head to see the top of Su Bai's head.
"Are you Su Bai?"
His voice was as deep and resonant as a war drum beating beside his ear.
