95: Chapter 95: Where are the side effects?
Her voice was stuck in her throat.
Her brain was frantically analyzing the scene before her, processing at the speed of a Lin family heiress with top-three theoretical grades in the class.
Thirteen sets of night-raid outfits.
No, that's ten shredded ones and three intact ones.
Thirteen assassins. Ten dead. Three alive. The three survivors were tied up like bundles.
Weapon fragments on the floor—she had seen some of them in the Lin family's material department catalog. Fifth-tier Venom Fang Daggers. They cost at least seven figures on the black market, and even then, they were priceless. Any assassin capable of wielding such weapons had to be at least Tier 5.
And now, these weapon fragments were scattered in a pool of dark red liquid.
About five seconds had passed since she woke up.
It felt like an eternity since the owners of these weapons were still alive.
"You're awake?" Su Bai didn't even look up. "Is the injury on your forehead alright?"
Lin Xiao didn't answer.
Because she was looking at Zhao Dahai.
Zhao Dahai had just crawled up from the floor, a footprint still imprinted on his chubby face. His gaze swept from the dismembered corpses to the three survivors in the corner, and from the grenade fragments to Su Bai's clean hem. His lips moved about a dozen times.
"Su Bai."
"Hmm."
"These people—"
"Came to assassinate me."
"Tier 5?"
"Lowest is Tier 4. The leader, I don't know their level, probably peak Tier 5."
"Ten."
"Ten dead. Left three for questioning."
"You did this alone?"
"And Kyubey."
Kyubey squatted on the sofa armrest and tilted its head.
"I only provided tactical advice. Su Bai did all the work."
Zhao Dahai took a deep breath.
"What is your current level?"
"Level 20. Tier 2."
"Tier 2. In these last few minutes, you alone killed several Tier 5 and Tier 6s."
"To be precise, within one second," Kyubey corrected. "He used Time Stop twice. The first time to set up a firepower grid, the second time for the finishing blows. The actual combat time totaled no more than sixty seconds. About fifty-five of which were spent checking the assassins' equipment."
Zhao Dahai buried his face in his hands.
Then he let out a strange sound, halfway between crying and laughing, the sound of a worldview completely shattered.
Lin Xiao stood up, leaning against the wall. Her fingers were trembling, but she forced herself to stand straight.
"Who sent them?"
"Was just about to ask." Su Bai walked to the corner and squatted in front of the three survivors.
Three assassins.
One was still retching. One had wet his pants. Only the one in the middle barely maintained a shred of composure.
"Three questions." Su Bai held up his fingers. "First, who sent you? Second, how many more are there? Third, who is your employer?"
The assassin in the middle gritted his teeth.
"You think—you think we'll talk? We don't have—"
Click.
Su Bai pulled the pin on a grenade and shoved it into his mouth.
"You have five seconds."
The assassin's eyes nearly popped out of his sockets. He nodded frantically, making muffled wailing sounds. Su Bai took the grenade out of his mouth.
"G-Ghost Guild—we are the Ghost Guild's assassination squad—"
He panted, his voice trembling like a leaf. "W-we don't know the employer—the order came from above—they only said the target was you—dead or alive—the reward is ten Tier 8 magic cores—"
Su Bai frowned.
Ten Tier 8 magic cores—that was a generous offer. He had a vague impression of the Ghost Guild; it seemed to be one of the thirteen guilds that had jointly boycotted the magical girl card, and it also seemed to be the guild that released the Beast God Armament? Sigh, he didn't really pay attention to such things, and at this moment, he felt he knew too little.
But it didn't matter, because Su Bai suddenly noticed that the assassin in the middle had stopped trembling.
The corners of his mouth curled into an extremely ugly arc.
"However—"
"What's the point of asking these things?"
His voice changed. The previous terror was instantly overwritten by something deeper and colder.
"You can kill us. You can kill Tier 5s, you can kill peak Tier 5s, so what?"
He raised his head.
His eyes gleamed with fanaticism.
"Our boss is a peak Tier 6, a true peak Tier 6! Haha, you didn't know, did you? At this stage, body tempering is already complete. You could say that before Tier 6, it's all about Magic Card Masters, but after Tier 6, Magic Card Masters choose to fuse with cards. Refining a physique-type card is the foundation. That explosion of yours can't kill a peak Tier 6! Haha, for him to kill a Tier 2 worm like you, a single finger is enough. You think you're strong? You just haven't seen a true—"
BOOM!!!
A dark green magical shockwave exploded outside the window, and all the glass in the entire dormitory building shattered in the same instant. A magical pressure belonging to a peak Tier 6 rolled in from outside, so intense that the air itself trembled.
Chu Yin snapped her eyes open on the sofa.
"Tier 6—peak—?!"
Her voice cracked. She was a Tier 7 sword cultivator; fighting a peak Tier 6 in her prime would be nothing. But now, she couldn't even roll over, her magic pool completely empty. Lin Xiao was just a Card Creator apprentice not even at Tier 2, and Zhao Dahai went without saying.
And Su Bai had already used Time Stop twice. Even if he could use it, could his methods kill a peak Tier 6? At Tier 6, everyone generally chose to refine and fuse physical enhancement cards; their physique was truly formidable, not so easy to kill!
"Su Bai—run—"
Chu Yin's words were cut off.
Because she saw Su Bai flick the hourglass again.
Suddenly, it felt like a frame of vision had skipped.
What kind of feeling was that? It was as if Su Bai's figure suddenly started to fade away, and she didn't know when, but she felt as if the world had stopped running just a moment ago.
Then...
BOOM—!!!!!!!
A pillar of golden-red light shot up into the sky from outside the window, like a nuclear explosion.
The air was instantly ionized, and the clouds were blasted through directly. The peak Tier 6 burly man, along with his green-flame giant sickle, evaporated into plasma in the center of the light pillar.
Then, a smooth, bald head fell from the sky.
Trailing a streak of black scorched smoke.
Thud.
It landed right on the windowsill.
The three surviving assassins stared at the still-smoking bald head. The one in the middle, who had just been laughing wildly, still had his mouth hanging open in that same posture.
But the laughter had completely vanished.
Replaced by an extremely quiet, almost devout, fear.
"Th-this is—"
"This is your boss."
Su Bai swiped the bald head off the windowsill, letting it roll to the feet of the three survivors.
"Peak Tier 6, truly tough. It took my magic and still had a head left. Sigh, my strength is still too weak, only Tier 2."
He tilted his head and sighed, "I'm too weak."
The three assassins simultaneously let out a scream like mice whose tails had been stepped on.
"You three, I think you're truly tired of living."
Lin Xiao walked up to the three survivors and said expressionlessly.
"Wait—"
Bang. Bang.
Two shots.
She picked up a short-barreled gun from the floor that one of the assassins had dropped, and two of them died on the spot.
The remaining one widened his eyes, trembling, and wet himself.
Seeing this, Su Bai said, "Why keep one alive?"
"See if he has any more intelligence." Lin Xiao tilted her chin.
The assassin hurriedly said, "Yes! Yes, yes, yes!"
He hadn't expected Lin Xiao to be so decisive in killing her companions directly, and combined with the death of the peak Tier 6, he was scared out of his wits and spoke incoherently. However, this guy didn't seem to have any value; even under such terror, what he said was all nonsense. Su Bai shook his head, and Lin Xiao understood, shooting the last person.
Zhao Dahai's eyes widened: "Lin Xiao, when did you—"
"Just now." Lin Xiao threw the gun aside, her hand still trembling.
Chu Yin lay on the sofa, watching everything before her. Her mouth opened and closed, closed and opened.
"Su Bai."
"Hmm."
"That move you just used... a nuclear bomb?"
"Explosion Magic."
"You know that too!?"
"Yes, I'm the creator!"
"After you used it—"
"What's wrong?"
"Why are you still standing?"
Su Bai opened his mouth.
Then his eyes rolled upward.
"Who said—"
Thump.
He fell straight backward. The back of his head hit the floor with a crisp sound.
"Su Bai!!"
"...No side effects."
He stared at the ceiling, speaking in an extremely calm tone, as if stating a fact, "It's impossible to have no side effects. I can't even move my eyelids now. It was just because my physique is a bit better than yours... Help me close the curtains, it's too bright."
