Chapter 18: Who exactly is this divine being?! So capable! (Please keep reading)
In the staff dormitory of LLNL Laboratory in Eagleland.
Lu Ze looked at his surroundings and nodded: “It’s not bad… At least it’s a single room.”
The space wasn’t very big, less than twenty square meters, but at least there was a bedroom and a bathroom, and a small kitchen for simple cooking.
Although it looked a bit shabby, Lu Ze was quite satisfied.
After all, he didn't want to share a room with the 'black uncles'; even an old white man would make him uncomfortable, because the smell on those people was truly overwhelming.
And although he used to live in a double room, Li Yijie, as an ‘outsider’ from Eagleland, almost never stayed in the dormitory, so it was no different from a single room.
He glanced at his email.
There was still no reply; the Xia Academy of Sciences seemed to have fallen into a long silence.
Lu Ze raised an eyebrow: “Da Xia is as cautious as ever. They must still be thinking.”
“But that’s true, it seems I’ve given them a big problem.”
He naturally knew the concerns of the Xia Academy of Sciences, so he directly stated that he had not encountered any danger.
If they still hadn't replied to the email, it was probably because they were deliberating on what technology would be most suitable.
However, he genuinely approved of this caution.
If Da Xia hadn't possessed this extraordinary caution, decades ago, it would have been devoured without a trace by the jackals and tigers of the international community.
He was only known as a ‘cautious little genius’, but Da Xia was the true master of caution!
He checked the time; it was already past seven in the evening.
Lu Ze rubbed his stomach as a pang of hunger hit him: “The most important question now is, what should I eat?”
He had wandered around the small town all afternoon and hadn't found any Chinese restaurants; most were fast food or Western cuisine.
Lu Ze truly couldn't enjoy the local ‘delicacies’ of Eagleland.
They were either excessively sweet, with sugar added as if there were no tomorrow, or excessively greasy, with various creams and butters piled on, and sometimes even additional sweeteners sprinkled on top to meet their required sweetness.
Many employees at LLNL Laboratory preferred snacks like donuts, which had honey and sugar in the dough and were covered in chocolate sauce, rather than sunflower seeds or nuts.
With every bite, they would give a thumbs-up and say, “Donuts are so delicious.”
No wonder the average person in Eagleland weighs three hundred pounds; who could handle eating like that?
“I'd better cook for myself…”
Lu Ze opened his backpack; he had just bought a few tomatoes and eggs, so he decided to make tomato and egg fried rice.
It would also save him some money; eating out in Eagleland was not cheap, even a simple meal with a tip would cost twenty or thirty dollars in this era.
Just as he was about to cook.
Suddenly, his phone rang; it was an unknown number.
“Who is calling me?” Lu Ze frowned.
Only a few people knew his new phone number. Family? It should be early morning in Da Xia.
With this doubt, he answered the call.
A clear and sweet voice came from the phone.
“Hey, Lu Ze, how are you tonight?” A familiar laugh came from the other end.
Hearing that laugh, his mind seemed to reflect a girl with long black hair and two shallow dimples on her face.
“Oh, it’s you, Lucy.” Lu Ze rubbed his head.
He then remembered that Lucy had just exchanged phone numbers with him that afternoon.
“Is there something you need?”
“Are you coming to the laboratory for dinner?” Lucy continued to ask with a laugh.
“Forget it, I’ll just grab something myself.” Lu Ze shook his head.
He had a deep impression of the canteen here in Eagleland; the dishes were monotonous, and more importantly, they didn't taste good, and the most outrageous thing was, they were expensive!
He now deeply missed Da Xia's university canteens, where a good meal could be had for five yuan.
Besides, it was already this late, so he might as well just eat something simple.
However.
Lucy quietly uttered a sentence that moved Lu Ze: “Are you really not coming? The laboratory canteen is free for all employees, and today’s dishes are quite good. It would be a shame if you didn’t come.”
“Wait for me, I’ll be right there.” Lu Ze immediately stood up and interrupted.
Free? Well, that’s a different story.
He didn't expect Lucy and he to be the same kind of people.
On his path of exploiting capitalism, he finally had a kindred spirit.
At the same time, while Lu Ze was heading to the canteen.
Xia Academy of Sciences, Director’s Office.
“No, this technology won’t work either.” Zhang Yuli rejected one idea after another in his mind.
“What technology should be chosen that best serves current interests?”
He paced back and forth in the room, thinking hard, always feeling that it wasn't secure enough.
Just then.
“Old Zhang, come on, let’s play a few more rounds.” An old man with white hair walked into the office, holding a chessboard.
“Losing to you yesterday was an accident; my cannon was taken when I wasn’t paying attention, it doesn’t count, it doesn’t count.”
Saying that, he pulled Zhang Yuli by the hand to sit at the table and began to arrange the chess pieces one by one.
“Forget it, I’m not playing today.” Zhang Yuli waved his hand, refusing.
Hearing this, the old man seemed a bit surprised: “Hey, I mean, usually when you win a few games, you’d be clamoring for me to play with you all night. What’s going on today?”
Normally, it was Zhang Yuli who dragged him to play chess, but this time he was so uncharacteristically different.
“Did something big happen at the Xia Academy of Sciences?” He frowned, looking at Zhang Yuli’s distracted appearance.
“General Zheng, let me ask you a question: what technology do you want most right now?” Zhang Yuli asked with a serious expression.
General Zheng was stunned for a moment upon hearing this, then blurted out without thinking: “The technology I want most… Controlled nuclear fusion?”
Zhang Yuli twitched his mouth: “Do you think I’m joking?”
Controlled nuclear fusion? Not to mention he wanted this technology, which country in the world didn't want it?
“Isn’t it?” General Zheng glared at him.
“No, it’s best if it’s any technology that has already been developed, and is currently in Eagleland.”
Upon hearing such an absurd scope of choice, General Zheng’s expression almost couldn’t hold: “Old Zhang, you’re getting on in years, don’t be impulsive. Our Da Xia can still wait.”
Good heavens, any technology that has already been developed, and specifically in Eagleland. What big thing are you planning to do over there?
“I’m old, let me go!”
Listening to his teasing tone, Zhang Yuli knew that he wouldn’t get anywhere without telling him the truth: “Listen to me, if, and I mean if—”
“Someone told us to pick any technology from Eagleland, and he would help us get it. What kind of technology would you choose?”
Zhang Yuli did not deliberately hide anything from his old friend.
Zheng Lixing, he was the man who developed Miss Qiu in the desert decades ago. He endured the difficult years of Da Xia, and his presence was in many top-secret projects.
Nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, and so on, he was deeply involved in all of them.
He was even wanted by Eagleland for decades, only becoming widely known in recent years as archives were gradually declassified.
If it weren't for his age and lack of desire to continue handling various affairs of the Xia Academy of Sciences, he would be the best candidate for the director of the Xia Academy of Sciences.
His trustworthiness was beyond question; the highest authority had long granted him certain browsing permissions, but Zhang Yuli just hadn't had time to inform him.
As soon as the words fell.
“What??” Zheng Lixing’s face was blank, as if he had heard something out of a fantasy.
Who the hell is this divine being, so capable of getting specified technology from Eagleland?
Is he Sun Wukong?
