217: Chapter 217: The Judge
Meanwhile, at the City Lord's Mansion.
City Lord Li Qingge sat in his study, toying with a Jade Slip in his hand.
Elder Gu stood beside him, leaning on his cane, saying nothing.
"Elder Gu, what do you think of this person, Xiao Ran?"
City Lord Li Qingge asked suddenly.
It was clear he already knew about Xiao Ran's recent acceptance of bribes.
Elder Gu thought for a moment.
"He has guts, means, background, and is greedy enough. I can only say he lives up to his Sect reputation."
Elder Gu spoke very directly.
Although he said that, he actually held Xiao Ran in high regard.
Just think about it: in a Demonic Sect where people kill, burn, and slaughter entire families at the drop of a hat, the biggest flaw of a Sect Saint is actually just taking bribes?
Doesn't that make it feel like, in disguise, Xiao Ran is a good person?
Upon hearing this, City Lord Li Qingge laughed heartily.
"Taking bribes is good! Taking bribes means he has a weakness."
"If we need to discard him later, we'll have a reason, won't we?"
"However, at this stage, I must use him, but I cannot rely on him alone."
Elder Gu was stunned: "Does the City Lord mean..."
City Lord Li Qingge put down the Jade Slip.
"Over the years at the Sword Qi Great Wall, the influence of the aristocratic families and the Sects has grown, threatening the status of the City Lord's Mansion."
"I need someone to keep them in check. Xiao Ran is one, but that is not enough."
Elder Gu was thoughtful: "Is the City Lord talking about that person from last time?"
City Lord Li Qingge nodded.
"Exactly!"
"The Saint of Supreme Dao Palace, Li Changsheng."
Elder Gu nodded silently upon hearing this; this person was indeed a good candidate.
He and Xiao Ran were the same: they had background, strength, and he was from a righteous Sect, naturally opposing Xiao Ran.
"Then what reason should we find?"
Xiao Ran received a reward because he helped the Monster Hunting Team, but what about Li Changsheng?
The City Lord smiled indifferently; he had already planned it out.
"He saved my daughter in the east of the city yesterday."
Elder Gu was surprised: "What happened?"
City Lord Li Qingge continued.
"Yesterday, I asked Xiaoyu to go shopping in the east of the city and secretly sent a few assassins to assassinate her. It just so happened that Li Changsheng passed by and intervened to save her."
Elder Gu's mouth twitched.
"City Lord, are you using your own daughter as bait?"
City Lord Li Qingge waved his hand: "If I don't do this, how can I summon him legitimately?"
Elder Gu was speechless.
City Lord Li Qingge turned around and said to Elder Gu: "Go and invite Li Changsheng."
Elder Gu nodded and turned to leave.
Meanwhile, in the east of the city.
In an inconspicuous inn.
Li Changsheng sat cross-legged on the bed, eyes closed, regulating his breath.
Su Qinghan sat by the window, watching the street scene outside, saying nothing.
After the two arrived at the Sword Qi Great Wall, they had been staying in this inn.
Li Changsheng planned to open a restaurant and was currently scouting for a suitable storefront.
Su Qinghan went to the city wall every day to kill Yao Beasts, leaving early and returning late, covered in blood when she returned.
"Senior Sister Su, you go to kill Yao Beasts every day, aren't you tired?"
Li Changsheng opened his eyes and asked.
Su Qinghan said indifferently: "Not tired."
Li Changsheng sighed and did not ask further.
He knew that Su Qinghan was using slaughter to suppress her Heart Demon.
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
"Is Young Master Li in? The City Lord requests your presence."
Li Changsheng was stunned; he stood up and opened the door.
A guard stood at the door, holding a token in his hand.
"The City Lord invites Young Master Li to the mansion for a chat."
Li Changsheng was confused but still nodded.
"Alright, I'll come right away."
He turned to Su Qinghan and said: "Senior Sister Su, I'm going to the City Lord's Mansion."
Su Qinghan nodded without speaking.
Li Changsheng followed the guard, crossing several streets to arrive at the City Lord's Mansion.
They walked into the mansion, crossed several corridors, and arrived in front of a study.
The guard pushed open the door and stepped aside.
"Young Master Li, please."
Li Changsheng stepped inside.
Inside the study, City Lord Li Qingge was still sitting behind the desk.
"Saint Li, please sit."
Li Changsheng sat down and cupped his hands:
"The City Lord has summoned this Junior, I wonder what the matter is?"
City Lord Li Qingge looked at him with a gentle gaze: "Regarding yesterday, thank you for saving my daughter."
Li Changsheng was stunned: "Yesterday? Saved whom?"
City Lord Li Qingge smiled: "My daughter, Li Yu'er."
"Yesterday, she was shopping in the east of the city and encountered several assassins; fortunately, you intervened to save her."
Li Changsheng thought for a moment; yesterday, he did indeed see a woman being besieged by several men in black in the east of the city.
He intervened and drove the men in black away.
He hadn't thought much of it at the time, assuming it was just a common robbery.
"It was just a small effort, City Lord, you need not be so polite."
City Lord Li Qingge shook his head: "You saved my daughter, I owe you a favor."
He picked up a token from the desk and handed it to Li Changsheng.
"This is your reward."
Li Changsheng took the token and looked down at it.
The token was entirely golden, with two characters engraved on the front—Judge.
The back was engraved with the pattern of the Sword Qi Great Wall, and that golden Sword Intent was lifelike.
"Judge?"
Li Changsheng was stunned.
City Lord Li Qingge nodded.
"Saint Li, you don't have a formal job since coming to the Sword Qi Great Wall, do you?"
"It just so happens that we are lacking a Judge here, and we urgently need a responsible warrior with a clear sense of justice to take the position. I think you are very suitable."
City Lord Li Qingge's words had too many loopholes, but he didn't care.
Li Changsheng was shocked upon hearing this.
Judge? Isn't that just a magistrate?
He, a Saint of Supreme Dao Palace, actually coming to be a magistrate?
City Lord Li Qingge seemed to see through his thoughts.
"What? Do you look down on it?"
Li Changsheng quickly shook his head: "No, no, it's just..."
City Lord Li Qingge waved his hand: "Although the name 'Judge' sounds ordinary, the power of a Judge at the Sword Qi Great Wall is not small."
"For any case within the Sword Qi Great Wall, however you judge it, the Law Enforcement Team will execute it."
"If you say lock them up for a few days, they will be locked up for a few days."
"If you say fine them a certain amount, they will be fined that amount."
He paused and looked at Li Changsheng.
"Moreover, a Judge can report directly to the City Lord's Mansion, which means if you have any issues in the future, you can come directly to me."
"This is quite a lucrative position!"
Li Changsheng was shocked.
Report directly to the City Lord? This power is indeed not small.
"Many thanks, City Lord."
He quickly stood up and cupped his hands.
City Lord Li Qingge waved his hand: "No need to thank me, this is what you deserve."
"Go now, go report to the Judges Office."
"The person in charge there is called Judge Zhao, he is a veteran; you should learn well from him."
Li Changsheng stood up, said goodbye, and left.
