159: The glory of motherhood
“That’s just how it is.” Bai Wanning looked down at the child in her arms, a hint of sarcasm in her eyes. “I wonder if this child can survive after his mother dies.”
“I… I’m scared…” Jiang Dai looked at the zombies surrounding the building and completely broke down, tears streaming down her face. “It’s too terrifying… Can’t you just take care of my son?”
Bai Wanning sneered, “Do you think you’re the only one who’s scared in this world? Do you think you’re the only one suffering?”
She hugged the child tightly, her voice cold and clear. “You don’t care about him, and his biological father doesn’t care about him, so why should I? If this child dies, at least you’ll see how cowardly you are.”
“His parents don’t love him, so why should I, an outsider, bear everything? What are you even?”
After saying this, Bai Wanning turned and walked towards the zombie horde downstairs without looking back, leaving behind a shocked man and a tearful Jiang Dai.
“Brother Lei, this…” Yun Chuan couldn’t help but look at Lei Qian, his eyes full of confusion.
Lei Qian, however, smiled faintly, his tone certain. “Let Wanning handle this herself. Although her words are harsh, she won’t actually harm the child. She’s not that kind of person.”
Sure enough, just as Bai Wanning was three steps away from the zombie horde,
“No! Don’t! I’ll come down! I’m coming down! Please, please don’t hurt my Guoguo!!”
Jiang Dai finally broke down, crying out loudly towards downstairs, her voice filled with utter fear and despair.
Jiang Dai was scared out of her wits.
Her legs were weak, and her mind was in a mess, but upon closer thought, she realized Bai Wanning was right.
She had no relation to Bai Wanning, so why should Bai Wanning take care of her son? This world had gone mad; even Guoguo’s biological father wouldn’t give them, mother and son, a bite to eat.
This man, to appease Bai Wanning and them, could actually be so cruel as to throw his own son from a tall building!
Bai Wanning was right; if even a child’s parents didn’t love him, why should others be soft-hearted?
Her eyes narrowed, and she turned to pounce on the man, raising her hand to scratch several bloody marks on his face. Then, she rushed into the house without looking back.
The man outside hadn’t recovered from his shock; was this woman crazy? She actually resisted? And dared to fight back?
His mind was a jumble; he just felt that Bai Wanning was even more cold-blooded than a zombie.
She was saving the child, yet at the same time, she said she wanted to sell the child? And to those… He couldn’t help but shiver, cursing in his heart: Is this woman even human?
“What are you doing? Where are you going!” The woman’s roar on the side startled him awake.
He turned his head and saw Jiang Dai rummaging through the kitchen, her movements swift. A moment later, she found a cleaver.
“What are you doing!?” the man yelled, his face changing drastically.
The child in her arms was his; the ultrasound had even confirmed it was a boy, a normal boy!
How could he let her leave at a time like this? He took a few steps forward, trying to stop her.
But Jiang Dai suddenly turned, and her hand came down with the knife!
“Ah ah ah!” The man screamed, a long gash appearing on his arm, blood gushing out.
He instinctively covered his wound, staring at her with disbelief, his voice changed. “Are you crazy?!”
Jiang Dai, however, laughed, her laughter shrill and manic.
“Yes, I’m crazy! I’ve been crazy for a long time!” Her eyes were bloodshot, the cleaver in her hand wildly swinging in the air. “You beasts! I only came to your house to work, but you locked me up and forced me to have a child! You had a hundred ways, why did you choose this one?!”
“You even treated my son like an animal, beating him every few days! You’re not human! Your whole family isn’t human! You all deserve to die!”
With that, Jiang Dai rushed into the room. Wherever the cleaver went, blood splattered.
It wasn’t until the people of this family were all hacked and kneeling on the ground, wailing for mercy, that she finally stopped, breathing heavily, and spat fiercely on the ground.
She was no longer the woman who allowed herself to be slaughtered.
Once, she was kept like a dog by the Meng family, monitored twenty-four hours a day.
During the day, she served the entire family like a maid, but at night, she was a plaything for their three men. She didn’t even have the right to die.
Now that the Apocalypse had arrived, and life and death were uncertain, she had nothing left to lose.
She picked up the cleaver and stared coldly at the woman who had personally sent her to hell.
“It was you! You drugged my tea and put me in your husband’s bed!” She gritted her teeth, the blade suddenly slashing down, her throat severed, blood gushing like a spring.
“Ah ah ah ah ah—!”
No matter how the family screamed, she ignored them.
In her eyes, there was only revenge.
Blood stained the floor. She carried the blood-stained cleaver and rushed out of the house without looking back… Outside, Bai Wanning was sitting on the car hood, holding Guoguo, her gaze coldly fixed on the wandering zombies not far away.
Those monsters were lurking downstairs where the First-level Zombie was, their suppressed roars making one’s scalp tingle.
She looked down at the child in her arms, her expression complex, her fingers trembling slightly, and finally handed the child to Lei Qian.
“Here, you hold him for a bit.”
“Huh? What?” Lei Qian was startled, looking at her with a bewildered expression. He had never held a child before, a straight man, completely unprepared.
Bai Wanning rolled her eyes at him and said coldly, “Why are you so surprised? Hold the child and wait for his mother to come downstairs.”
She wanted to hold him, but she didn’t dare.
She was afraid of getting entangled again.
Afraid of being like before, knowing he wasn’t her biological child, yet refusing to let go.
That time, she snatched someone else’s child and held him desperately.
She refused to believe her son, Cai Cai, was truly dead.
She would rather deceive herself, rather treat someone else’s child as a substitute for Cai Cai.
She even fought with that child’s mother.
It wasn’t until she was exhausted and covered in wounds that she finally accepted the reality: Cai Cai was truly gone, never to return.
She was afraid of facing that heartbreaking pain again.
If she lost control now, not only she herself, but even the entire team could be dragged down.
Bai Wanning knew very well that she couldn’t show her emotional breakdown in front of everyone.
Moreover, she was pregnant, and a four-year-old child’s weight was not light. If she couldn’t hold him steadily, she might injure herself, not to mention the child might fall and get hurt.
Ultimately, the child’s father was Lei Qian, and sometimes he should also bear some responsibility.
Lei Qian was speechless for a moment, listening to her cold tone.
He looked at Bai Wanning, then lowered his head, meeting the eyes of the timid little boy staring at him.
The little boy realized that a strange man was holding him, his face changed dramatically, and then he burst into heartbreaking tears.
He had suffered enough from men’s indifference and cruelty; his fear of his father was deeply ingrained. The moment he was held by a man, he instinctively began to struggle.
Lei Qian immediately panicked.
He had never held a child and had no idea how to comfort him, let alone deal with a frightened, crying little boy.
