192: wrongdoing
Bai Wanning was quite satisfied with Jiang Dai's answer.
She had originally thought that Jiang Dai would simply give up after learning that she was Shen Zhen's sister, but Jiang Dai was even smarter than she imagined. Although she had been confined in that house without support, she saw things much more clearly than many others.
If she had been unwilling to leave with them because of Shen Zhen, Bai Wanning might have allowed her to stay, but her respect for Jiang Dai would have vanished.
Now, with Jiang Dai willing to accept the challenge, Bai Wanning felt even more respect for her.
"Alright, you can go out and hunt zombies, but whatever you do, don't rush to the front. Like last time, stay at the back and only kill the ones we miss, understand? Don't take unnecessary risks."
"I know. I'll protect myself and the children."
After packing their luggage, Bai Wanning handed Jiang Dai a frozen fish. Jiang Dai stared, stunned, at the giant fish she pulled from her bag, then heard Bai Wanning say calmly, "I brought it."
Though curious, Jiang Dai didn't ask further. She simply turned to prepare a meal for Bai Wanning and Guoguo.
Once she left, Bai Wanning casually picked up Guoguo, who was eating dried squid, her eyes narrowing slightly. This child was good; he was an Ability User. Although his ability had not yet awakened, that day was not far off.
Jiang Dai was busy in the kitchen, while Bai Wanning played with Guoguo. After a pot of fish ball soup was ready, she drank three bowls in one go, finally feeling content.
She hoped the child wouldn't be affected by her physical condition, which was worse than a street beggar's.
Jiang Ziming, that scoundrel, truly intended for her to suffer.
Just because that woman, Bai Xue, had her head filled with baseless lies, he could be so cruel as to harm her like this.
Speaking of which, she hadn't seen that man in a long time. Where had he suddenly gone?
As she was thinking, a knock suddenly sounded at the door. Bai Wanning looked up and saw Lu Yin standing at the entrance, chest puffed out like a peacock.
"Brother Qian said we need to leave."
Bai Wanning pursed her lips. She couldn't be bothered to argue with Lu Yin. If this woman was pleased with being treated as a messenger, then she might as well enjoy this 'glory'.
"Go tell him we'll be out in a moment," Bai Wanning said calmly, her tone neither warm nor cold, betraying no emotion, yet it made Lu Yin frown slightly, unable to pinpoint what felt off.
Bai Wanning watched her turn and leave, a cold smile playing on her lips. Lu Yin was too young to be her opponent.
She turned to Jiang Dai and whispered, "You should go get ready too."
Jiang Dai nodded in agreement.
Bai Wanning said no more, walking out of the room to throw the recyclable bowls into the trash. Jiang Dai then put shoes on Guoguo and followed behind her.
Lei Qian and the others had already gathered in the hotel's small lobby. Seeing Jiang Dai come downstairs with her son, they all nodded in greeting.
Da Cheng, standing in the corner, couldn't help but curl his lip when he saw her appear with the child.
This was why he disliked traveling with women; they were simply a burden.
He walked over to Jiang Dai, glanced at her, and asked politely, "Are you coming with us too?"
Although his tone was polite, Jiang Dai, who had lived with Guoguo's father for over three years, could naturally detect the contempt in his eyes.
Though annoyed by his condescending attitude, she still looked up, smiled at him, and nodded, "Yes, don't worry, I'll take care of myself and the child."
Da Cheng's lips curled into a sarcastic smile.
Though he looked down on this woman, he didn't openly mock her, merely saying blandly, "Alright, Sister Jiang, I hope everything goes well for you. When we get to the hospital, no one will have time to look after you. If something happens, you might be at a disadvantage. You should think it over carefully."
His tone was polite, yet every word stung like a needle.
Jiang Dai's smile finally faltered. She placed a hand on Guoguo's back, looked at him coldly, and said, "Don't worry. Since I've decided to go with the team, I know how big the risks are. Even if it means dying with my son, I can handle it. I don't need you to save me."
With that, she turned and walked towards Bai Wanning, no longer bothering to listen to Da Cheng's baseless 'concerns'.
The reason she decided to follow Bai Wanning was because she trusted this woman.
Others might not see it, but she knew Bai Wanning was an extremely responsible person. Since she dared to lead the team to the hospital, it meant she had full confidence.
More importantly, Bai Wanning never asked her to charge into battle. She wanted her to stay at the back, as long as she could work and kill zombies, it wouldn't be hard or dangerous.
What Bai Wanning wanted was a team that wouldn't hold them back, not a group of 'heroes'.
Look now, she was indeed hunting zombies. But just because she didn't attack as often as others, she was looked down upon?
Jiang Dai didn't want others to look at her the way they looked at Da Cheng. She wanted to become stronger and more courageous.
Not just her, her son Guoguo also needed to become stronger. Times had changed; how could a child who couldn't even adapt to blood and corpses survive?
Since Bai Wanning could take the risk, she and her son dared to venture forth with her!
Yang Chunhua walked over to Da Cheng and asked in a low voice, "Why did you say those things to her?"
"What do you mean?" Da Cheng blinked innocently, feigning ignorance. "Can't I care about Sister Jiang? She's pregnant and has a child; it's easy for something to go wrong. I was just reminding her to be careful."
Yang Chunhua frowned slightly. She didn't think Da Cheng had said anything wrong, but she felt something was off. She opened her mouth, but before she could speak, Lei Qian called for everyone to depart.
She had no choice but to suppress her doubts for now and followed the team out.
Bai Wanning had, of course, noticed the small incident behind her but didn't turn back to intervene. She wasn't in a hurry to stand up for Jiang Dai. Firstly, people like Da Cheng couldn't be changed by a few words of persuasion from her.
He had looked down on women since he was young, and even if she were forceful, at most he would only pay lip service, his contempt remaining in his heart.
Secondly, she couldn't always stand up for Jiang Dai. Jiang Dai was already in an awkward position within the team; if she always backed her up, it would make others think she couldn't survive without a patron.
She had to stand up for herself, even if she stumbled a few times, she had to learn to fight back. Otherwise, others would walk all over her again and again.
"What are you looking at?" Bai Wanning rolled her eyes, turning to the man standing in front of her, her tone unfriendly: "What's it to you?"
With that, she snorted coldly and turned to leave.
Lei Qian also knew he was in the wrong last night and didn't say anything more. He was afraid that if he pushed Bai Wanning too hard, she would really turn around and leave, and what would he do then?
He silently followed her, got into the car. He knew best what he had done last night, and now he didn't even dare to offer an explanation, so he simply shut up and acted mute, started the engine, pressed the accelerator, and the car steadily drove out of the hotel.
