152: Chapter 152 Elder Brother, On Duty

Six Doors, Archive Room.

Lin Wan was flipping through the case files in her hands.

The capital has not been peaceful lately; ever since the prince was assassinated last time, the pressure on Six Doors has been immense.

She rubbed her sore brow and picked up the tea on the table to take a sip.

A steady sound of footsteps came from outside the door.

These footsteps were extremely light, yet carried an undisguised sharp Aura.

Lin Wan looked up.

The door curtain was lifted.

A man dressed in black athletic wear strode in.

"Brother?"

Seeing the person before her, Lin Wan was stunned.

Lin Sheng pulled over a chair and sat down in a relaxed, imposing manner.

"What, not welcoming your brother?"

He casually picked up a file from the table and flipped through it, but his gaze was scanning the room.

"Aren't you out suppressing bandits? Why are you suddenly back?"

Lin Wan frowned, looking Lin Sheng up and down.

Lin Sheng was a martial arts fanatic who spent the whole year outside looking for people to spar with or taking on bandit suppression missions.

It was truly abnormal for him to suddenly run back to the capital today.

"The Grand Martial Arts Tournament is about to begin; I've come back to join in the excitement."

Lin Sheng threw the file back onto the table, his tone casual.

"And to check on you while I'm at it."

Although he said he was checking on his younger sister, his eyes kept glancing outside the door.

People were coming and going in Six Doors, and he seemed to be searching for something.

"Check on me?"

Lin Wan snorted coldly.

"You, a busy person, are never seen all year round. Did the sun rise from the west today?"

Lin Sheng gave a dry laugh.

"It's just that I heard you've been quite busy lately, so as your brother, I'm showing some concern."

Seeing the pile of files spread out before Lin Wan's desk, he asked seemingly unintentionally.

"I heard you've taken on quite a few cases from the Celestial Prison lately?"

Lin Wan's heart tightened, sensing the implication.

"Six Doors and the Celestial Prison have always had dealings with each other, what's strange about that?"

She answered without changing her expression.

Lin Sheng nodded, not continuing to press.

But his gaze looked through the window into the distance.

In the corridor, Chen Ran walked over slowly.

He had come to Six Doors today to deliver some handover documents for the Celestial Prison, as well as for his daily patrol.

Just as he reached the door of the archive room, he stopped.

In his perception, he saw that there was an extra man in Lin Wan's room.

He looked to be in his thirties, wearing black clothes, with a stern face and an astonishing Aura.

Peak Aperture Condensation Realm.

Chen Ran saw through the other person's background at a glance.

This man's strength could be considered quite good even in the capital.

His gaze swept over Lin Wan and that man.

He felt that the two of them looked somewhat similar around the eyebrows and eyes.

"Could it be that her family has come?"

Chen Ran did not linger, not even changing the rhythm of his footsteps.

He walked straight past the archive room door and handed the documents to the clerk nearby.

"Excuse me, these are the documents for the Celestial Prison."

Chen Ran put the items down, said nothing more, and turned to leave.

Throughout the process, he didn't glance at the archive room even once.

The clerk took the documents and nodded respectfully.

"Go slowly, Prison Officer Chen."

Chen Ran waved his hand and continued walking forward.

He could feel a sharp gaze watching him from behind.

That gaze carried scrutiny and a hint of faint hostility.

Chen Ran restrained his Qi, not taking the initiative to get involved with that person.

Acting is one thing, but he didn't want to get involved in the troubles of these noble families.

Chen Ran quickened his pace and soon disappeared at the end of the corridor.

Inside the window.

Lin Sheng's gaze followed that person's back until he disappeared around the corner.

"Was that person who just passed by Chen Ran?"

Lin Sheng spoke suddenly.

Lin Wan's heart skipped a beat.

"Why are you asking about him?"

She forced herself to remain calm and organized the files on the table.

"Just asking."

Lin Sheng stared into Lin Wan's eyes.

"A Celestial Prison Officer actually coming to Six Doors to deliver documents? You two must meet quite often, right?"

"It's just work handover."

Lin Wan avoided Lin Sheng's gaze, her tone somewhat unnatural.

Her stammering appearance, in Lin Sheng's eyes, took on a completely different meaning.

This younger sister of his had a fiery temper since she was a child; when had she ever shown this kind of maidenly demeanor?

Could the rumors be true?

Did this girl really take a liking to that Prison Officer?

Lin Sheng suppressed the shock in his heart; this news must be reported back home to the other brothers, he couldn't act rashly.

"Fine, work handover."

He stood up and brushed the dust off his clothes.

"I'm heading back first, I'll come to see you another day."

Lin Sheng strode away.

Lin Wan watched his retreating back, her brows furrowing tighter and tighter.

Could the family have sensed something wrong?

If this disguise were punctured, the trouble of blind dates would follow one after another.

No.

She must do something, at least to solidify this relationship on the surface.

Lin Wan stood up and paced back and forth in the room.

"I still need to stabilize the situation at home first."

Lin Wan gritted her teeth and made up her mind.

She grabbed the saber from the table and strode out of the archive room.

Half an hour later.

Not long after Chen Ran walked out of the Six Doors gate, he was called out.

"Chen Ran."

Lin Wan caught up quickly.

She had changed into casual clothes, losing a bit of the sharpness of a Constable and gaining a hint of softness.

"Is there something, Constable Lin?"

Chen Ran stopped and was a bit puzzled.

Weren't the documents already handed over?

"Walk with me."

Lin Wan didn't explain and walked directly towards the bustling street.

Chen Ran followed behind, confused.

The street was clamorous with noise, and the hawking of shops on both sides rose and fell.

Lin Wan walked very slowly, her gaze lingering on the stalls on both sides.

She didn't speak, and Chen Ran was happy to be at leisure.

The two walked side by side in the crowd, drawing side glances from many passersby.

"Constable Lin, did you call me out just to go shopping?"

Chen Ran finally couldn't help but speak.

Lin Wan stopped in front of a stall selling rouge and powder.

She picked up a box of rouge and smelled it at the tip of her nose.

"This is called patrolling."

Lin Wan put down the rouge and turned to look at Chen Ran.

"Do you think the Constables of Six Doors are just on duty every day?"

Chen Ran raised an eyebrow.

"Fine, then I'll see how Constables patrol on regular days."

Chen Ran crossed his arms over his chest and strode in front.

Lin Wan watched his back and quickly followed.

The two walked one after another on the bustling street.

Lin Wan occasionally found some topics, trying to narrow the distance between them.

"What do you usually do in the Celestial Prison?"

"Surveillance, Cultivate, delivering food."

Chen Ran's answer was concise.

Lin Wan was choked up, not knowing how to continue the conversation.

This conversation couldn't go on.

She forced herself to keep smiling.

"Then... do you have any hobbies?"

"Making money."

Chen Ran answered without hesitation.

Lin Wan was completely speechless.

Besides money, is there nothing else in this man's head?

She gritted her teeth and decided to change her strategy.

"That jewelry store ahead is not bad, accompany me in to take a look."
