214: Chapter 214 Monsters, Talents
A screen of light appeared before his eyes.
【Prisoner: Scorching Evil Wolf】
【Realm: Fourth-Stage Peak】
【Talent: None】
【Sin Value: High】
【Status: Excited, intense hostility】
【Life Story: Originated from the Northern Wasteland Barren Ridge, fed on carrion when young, spent over a decade devouring its own kind, gradually developed intelligence, once led a wolf pack to break through three villages, devoured countless humans, later surrounded and suppressed by the Demon-Slaying Squad, captured with severe injuries...】
【Participation: None】
That was the information for the wolf Yao Beast; there was nothing unusual, and it seemed rather ordinary.
Chen Ran had no choice but to shift his gaze to the other prison cell.
【Prisoner: Green-Scaled Snake Yao】
【Realm: Fourth-Stage Peak】
【Sin Value: High】
【Status: Hidden, alert】
【Life Story: Born in the Southern Region Marshlands, inherently cunning, once deceived a hunting party, ambushed three scouts of the Demon-Slaying Squad, later fell into a siege and was bound into a cage...】
【Talent: Soft Bones】
【Participation: None】
"It has a talent?"
Chen Ran's expression changed slightly when he saw the information on the light screen.
【Soft Bones】
This time, his luck was not bad; he had found another talent from a Yao Beast.
If only he could farm it...
Chen Ran lowered his eyelids, calculating in his mind how to extract this talent.
Beside him, Warden Wen Ruoxu had long since lost the heart to stay, so he clapped his hands.
"Brother Chen, I'm going to take a stroll; I'll leave this to you."
Chen Ran waved his hand without turning back.
Warden Wen Ruoxu slipped away with light steps.
The disposal results for these two Yao Beasts had not yet been released.
Chen Ran was not in a hurry; they couldn't escape anyway, so he would just slowly farm the participation points first.
Chen Ran finally looked into the cage.
The wolf Yao Beast's eyes were blood-red, and a low growl was constantly suppressed in its throat.
There was no sound from the snake Yao Beast; it just curled itself in the deepest corner, head buried under its coiled tail, with a faint, ghostly phosphorescence occasionally seeping out from its scales, only to vanish in a flash.
One day later.
Footsteps echoed once again in the depths of the Celestial Prison.
Chen Ran pushed a wooden cart, on which sat several buckets emitting the smell of blood.
To quickly farm participation, personally interrogating, delivering food, and conducting inspections could all increase the speed.
As soon as he approached, a roar came from the darkness. A massive black object suddenly lunged up and slammed violently against the bars.
Boom!
The bars shook violently twice, sending a cloud of dust falling down. The black shadow staggered back two steps, its blood-red eyes staring fixedly at Chen Ran.
It let out a long, low hiss from its mouth, as if in warning, or perhaps as a threat.
"The cages on the fourth level were just re-reinforced; they are even tougher than before. You are quite a tough nut to crack."
Chen Ran whispered slowly, looking at the red-eyed Yao Beast.
Along with his voice, an aura as terrifying as an ocean radiated from his body.
It was as if something heavy was pressing down silently, causing the air in the entire bottom level to sink, before being suddenly constricted!
The youth in the black robe had faint purple flames flickering in his eyes at some point.
"Little wolf, you are being a bit naughty."
Whimper.
The Scorching Evil Wolf paused. Its vertical pupils slowly contracted, and it retreated half a step, then another half step, finally curling its body in the corner. The low growl in its throat gradually faded, turning into a thin, cautious purr.
Chen Ran pushed the food bucket through the iron gap, then carried the bucket to the snake Yao Beast's cell.
This one was quieter; the snake Yao Beast buried its head even deeper, not even leaking that phosphorescence anymore. After the food bucket was pushed in, it didn't move, as if playing dead. Chen Ran glanced at it and turned to walk away.
Yao Beasts do not have human intelligence, but they aren't completely ignorant either. Having cultivated to this level, they at least know what they cannot afford to provoke. Seeking advantages and avoiding harm is a biological instinct, and Yao Beasts are no exception.
The following days were unusually peaceful. Every day, Chen Ran followed his routine of coming to the bottom level for a stroll, feeding them, sitting for a while, farming participation, and waiting for the disposal decision from above.
Since that secret warning, the wolf Yao Beast had completely wilted. Every time it saw Chen Ran, it would shrink into the innermost part, tail tucked, eyes fixed on the ground.
As for the snake Yao Beast, it maintained that playing-dead posture, quiet and seemingly very obedient, but every time Chen Ran passed by, he could see a tiny flash of light in its eyes.
This one was quite smart. But what could being smart change? It wouldn't change anything.
Chen Ran had no special feelings toward these two Yao Beasts; their intelligence was extremely low, comparable only to that of a toddler.
He had heard that some Yao Beasts could speak human language and possessed intelligence not inferior to humans, but those were usually top-tier great Yao. They were not comparable to these small Yao.
Thus, Chen Ran came and went as usual every day, waiting for the participation number on the heavenly book of prison suppression to slowly climb. A few days passed just like that.
One afternoon, before the daylight had fully faded, there was commotion outside.
Chen Ran suddenly received a prompt from his subordinate that someone was coming to interrogate the Yao Beasts and had come specifically to inform him in advance.
Chen Ran leaned against the pillar at the entrance of the bottom level, raising his eyelids to look over there.
Leading the way was a man wearing the black armor of the Demon-Slaying Squad. He was in his early thirties, with a short beard under his chin and two hook-sickles tucked at his waist; his gait had a straightforward, capable air.
Behind him followed four or five team members, each carrying iron-chained cages, with runes cast onto the chains.
The man in the lead saw Chen Ran, stopped, and cupped his hands in greeting.
"This is the Celestial Prison's..."
"I am the Jailer here, Chen Ran."
The man took a look, his expression carrying a hint of appraisal.
"Long time no see, Jailer Chen is quite famous in the capital; I didn't expect you to be so young."
"I am Zhao Feng, Team Captain of the Demon-Slaying Squad's A-Division."
Chen Ran nodded; he found this rather novel. He knew that the Demon-Slaying Squad would take away the Yao Beasts, but at the time, he was just a low-ranking Jailer; when he encountered them, he could only watch from afar and dared not ask more.
But now, with his increased strength and status, he had actually become the person in charge of interfacing with this Demon-Slaying Squad, and he didn't know what to say.
"Are you here to pick up this batch of Yao Beasts?"
"Exactly." Zhao Feng said, "How many are being held in total? Would it be convenient to take us down to count them?"
