2: Chapter 2 Starlight Wolf

Supervisor Song had been very troubled lately.

Back when his younger brother, Song Jiang, was choosing a battle beast, he had personally accompanied him.

With his work experience at Bright Moon Company, he knew all too well which battle beasts were suitable for contracts and which were not.

But Song Jiang didn't care for anything else; he had his heart set on a Starlight Wolf cub.

He naturally opposed it, but his brother's temper was just like his name—Jiang, meaning stubborn!

He was so angry that he gave his brother a beating on the spot, only to be met with a double beating from his parents. In the end, his brother got his wish and chose a Starlight Wolf cub.

Many years passed.

Song Jiang regretted it, but now he was pestering his older brother for help.

Looking at Song Jiang's fawning expression, Supervisor Song's heart softened, and his explosive temper subsided.

He knew his brother was proud; if there were any other way, he would never have come to beg him.

"I told you back then, this Starlight Wolf... sigh!" Supervisor Song sighed. "I'll give it a try."

Song Jiang's face lit up with joy, and he nodded gratefully. "Great! I'm counting on you, Brother."

Supervisor Song shook his head and walked ahead, saying, "It's lucky that over the years I've managed to build a bit of a relationship with a big shot. If he agrees, it'll be fine. If he doesn't, then I'm out of options too."

Song Jiang nodded repeatedly.

At that moment, a young man wearing a mask walked over.

"Supervisor Song, please wait."

"And you are?"

"I... I'm a new Intern at the company. It's like this: I happen to have done research on the Starlight Wolf you mentioned. If you trust me, I can help you cultivate it. The fee isn't high, just 50,000."

The newcomer was none other than Li Yu.

"You? An Intern? Have you even seen a Starlight Wolf?" Supervisor Song frowned, looking displeased.

"I may be an Intern, but I have specialized knowledge. My graduation thesis was focused on the Starlight Wolf. I guarantee..."

"Stop!"

Supervisor Song raised his hand, his voice rising. "Look, Intern, I'm very busy. I don't have time to help you boost your performance stats. The company library has plenty of notes left by Senior Cultivators. You should go study those properly instead of coming here to pitch yourself."

As he finished speaking, he saw a figure walking out from the gate toward the company exit. He hurriedly left Li Yu behind and chased after them.

"Assistant Zhao!"

The young man called out stopped in his tracks.

"Supervisor Song, morning."

"Morning, morning. Where are you heading?"

"I'm delivering some materials to the Master."

"What? Is he not at the company?"

Supervisor Song's expression changed.

The cultivation big shot he knew was the Breeder that Assistant Zhao assisted—a well-known Breeder with the title of Senior Cultivator who had once researched three new evolution paths.

"No, he won't be back for a few days."

"I see..."

"Is there anything else, Supervisor Song? If not, I'll be going."

"Right, take care. I won't see you out..."

Supervisor Song watched Assistant Zhao's retreating figure and shook his head helplessly, saying to his brother, "You saw that. The big shot isn't at the company. There's nothing I can do."

Song Jiang looked dejected, his eyes filled with bitterness. "Brother, you were right. I should have listened to you back then."

"It's too late for that now. Just cherish this afternoon's match. Don't be afraid to lose. When there's a suitable battle beast in the future, I'll let you know. Let's go, let's head back."

The two turned to leave in their separate directions, only for a figure to flash in front of them, startling both of them.

Looking closely, it was that Intern from before.

"Kid, are you trying to scare us to death!" Supervisor Song said excitedly, patting his chest.

Song Jiang also glared at Li Yu.

Li Yu wasn't annoyed at all. He smiled and said, "Supervisor Song, since things have come to this, why not let me try? Your brother has a match this afternoon, and a man's honor is more important than his life."

"Enough! I won't let him be your guinea pig. Give it up." Supervisor Song's face turned pale, partly from anger and partly from the shock just now.

Song Jiang's expression was grim.

"Could the result really be worse than it is now? Losing your glory, disappointing your teammates, being mocked to your face by your opponent... isn't that more terrifying than death?" Li Yu continued.

Song Jiang's expression shifted slightly, as if he could already see those scenes playing out.

"Tell me, who is your supervisor! I want to see whose subordinate is so reckless as to try and make money off of me!"

Supervisor Song said furiously, pulling out his phone to find a contact, but Song Jiang grabbed his hand.

"Brother, let's try it."

"Have you lost your mind?"

"I'm perfectly sober. Brother, just like this young man said, I can't lose this match. If I lose, it proves that Lili was right to leave me! I won't accept that..."

Song Jiang's face flushed, and a hint of red appeared in his eyes.

Supervisor Song was stunned.

He knew his brother had a girlfriend of six years and they were about to discuss marriage, but he didn't know she had already broken up with him.

He didn't know that Song Jiang was hiding even more information.

Lili had left, and she had thrown herself into the arms of someone else—the very person who was his opponent in the next match. If he lost, he wasn't just losing to an opponent; he was losing to a love rival.

If it weren't for this, he wouldn't have come to his brother for help.

"Fine, I understand."

Supervisor Song sighed and said stiffly to Li Yu, "Let's get this straight. I'll let you cultivate it, and the 50,000 reward is no problem."

"I understand there are risks in cultivation, but you cannot gamble with the Starlight Wolf's life. If there's no chance of success, stop immediately."

"Otherwise, I'll find your supervisor and have you fired!"

Li Yu took a deep breath and nodded solemnly. "No problem!"

"Follow me."

The three of them passed through the security gate and headed toward the elevator.

It was lucky that Supervisor Song was leading the way; otherwise, it would have been discovered that Li Yu couldn't even pass through the gate, let alone know where the cultivation room was.

...

A short while later.

The three arrived at a cultivation room.

The cultivation room was larger than Li Yu's entire home—spacious, bright, and lined on all four sides with composite metal that could withstand the impact of immense force.

The cultivation room was divided into two parts.

The larger side was filled with precision instruments and a workbench for processing materials.

The smaller side contained an incubation pod for the battle beast's evolution.

Even the 'small' side was larger than Li Yu's room.

"Use this. Give it a try."

Supervisor Song said expressionlessly, "This is a Level 1 Cultivation Room, a place an Intern wouldn't get to touch once in a year."

Song Jiang looked at his brother gratefully.

After a brief moment of surprise, Li Yu nodded and said, "Alright, no problem. Now, please summon the battle beast."

Thanks to the original owner's memories, although this was Li Yu's first time seeing these instruments, he wasn't completely unfamiliar with them.

The original owner had used some of these instruments at school; they just weren't this precise.

Song Jiang walked to an open space and released a faint gray light, which transformed into a gray wolf.

The gray wolf stood 1.5 meters tall at the shoulder and was about two meters long. On its massive head, two green triangular eyes were soul-piercing. It shook its fur, and a violent aura of a demonic beast struck directly at Li Yu's psychological defenses.

Li Yu's heart pounded, his breathing became shallow, and his whole body froze up.

Although he had inherited the memories, this was his first time seeing such a monster-like demonic beast. He couldn't help but take a small half-step back.

"Intern, can you do this or not?" Supervisor Song frowned and asked with a look of disdain.

Song Jiang had already explained the situation to the battle beast. The wolf retracted its aura, stared at Li Yu, let out a light snort from its nose, and gave a call.

In Li Yu's ears, this sound translated into a sentence: "Gutless little rookie, I could eat half of you in one bite."

After the brief shock, Li Yu regained his composure. Realizing he was being looked down upon by a wolf, he couldn't help but smile faintly.

Regardless...

At least he had secured the job.
