151: Furnace and Poison Fire
Inside the medical bay, the atmosphere was as heavy as a physical substance.
Eve pointed at the cold, flickering shimmer spreading across Reno's body. Her voice was crisp and urgent, like glass striking steel.
"I have a concept: constructing a 'Biological Field Furnace'."
She looked at Chen Feng, her silver eyes filled with the pure fanaticism unique to technical personnel.
"An energy field, a 'Law Operating Table' on a microscopic level. We can't dispel it, but we can guide it. Like taming a wild beast, we can make this power follow our will to perform a delicate reconstruction of Reno's body."
"Sounds good," Chen Feng nodded. "What do you need?"
Eve immediately pulled up a list. The numbers on it caused Captain Fili's expression to change instantly.
"No! Absolutely not!" Fili shrieked, his four eyes bulging in terror. "This energy demand... it will drain every cell of the 'lucky dice'! The engines, the shields, even the life support system will collapse within ten minutes!"
Chen Feng ignored his hysteria, his gaze still locked on Eve. "Can you do it?"
"Theoretically, yes," Eve replied. "But what he says is true. The risk is extremely high."
"I'm not doing it!" Fili rushed between the two, practically pointing at Chen Feng's nose. "I don't care what kind of big shots you are, this is my ship! I will never allow you to gamble all our lives for a dying man!"
Chen Feng finally turned his head slowly to look at him.
There was no anger in those eyes, only a bottomless calm, colder than the space outside the window.
"Fili, stay at the bridge."
"You..."
"Don't make me say it twice before I solve the problem."
Fili felt his throat constricted by an invisible pressure. He wanted to resist, but found his legs turning weak. He cursed under his breath and finally retreated from the medical bay in a pathetic state.
Chen Feng fell back into silence.
He looked at Reno, who was enveloped in the cold shimmer within the life support pod, then looked down at the [Geas Marker] on his wrist, which seemed like a living thing.
Poison. A miracle.
Eve waited quietly by the side, not rushing him.
After an unknown amount of time, Chen Feng suddenly spoke, his voice raspy.
"Eve."
"Yes?"
"Your line of thinking is good, but the direction is wrong."
Eve frowned slightly.
"We don't 'transfer' energy." A flash of madness flickered in Chen Feng's eyes. "We 'create' energy."
He raised his hand and pointed at the chip on Reno's chest, the source of all the disaster.
"Is this [Stasis Sliver] itself a miniature, inexhaustible high-dimensional energy core?"
Eve froze completely.
This idea... this reverse thinking... she had never thought of it, nor had she ever dared to.
A few seconds later, an unprecedented brilliance erupted in her silver eyes, even outshining the eerie light on Reno's body.
"Theoretically... yes! It is a perfect energy source!" Her speech speed increased instantly. "But this is too dangerous! It's like drilling for energy in the core of a miniature nuclear explosion! Any small mistake, and we and this ship will be instantly decomposed into basic particles!"
"Can you do it?" Chen Feng asked only this one question.
"I need a precision 'Energy Extraction Converter' to stabilize the output, a valve that can filter Law Pollution and only output pure energy." Eve's breathing was a bit hurried. "But..."
She looked around and finally shook her head dejectedly. "There are no precision materials on the ship to manufacture such a converter. Those alloys, those conductive mediums—none of them are here."
The flame of hope that had just ignited seemed about to be extinguished.
"Don't give me names." Chen Feng interrupted her frustration. "Tell me what 'functions' the parts need to have."
Eve was stunned for a moment, then understood. She quickly listed the functions on her portable terminal.
"I need a 'Resonant Cavity' that can withstand high-frequency energy impacts, a 'Multiphase Stabilizer' that can filter noise, and a..."
Chen Feng took the terminal, his gaze sweeping over it rapidly.
His steps moved through the small bridge like a hungry wolf searching for prey, scrutinizing every part of this broken ship.
Finally, his gaze stopped in a corner.
There stood a dust-covered machine with a damaged casing, looking like an outdated entertainment device.
"Fili, what is that?"
"What?" Fili was sulking in the pilot's seat and answered crossly, "It's a 'Dream Dancer' Type 7 holographic entertainment machine. It's broken! Why, do you want to watch some dancing?"
"Eve." Chen Feng ignored him and simply handed the terminal to Eve, pointing at the machine. "Look at its internal 'Holographic Matrix Stabilizer'."
Eve walked over quickly. With just one glance at the interface and nameplate on the back of the machine, her eyes lit up again.
"...It perfectly matches all the functional requirements of a 'Multiphase Stabilizer'! In fact, its performance is even higher!"
"Then dismantle it," Chen Feng said in an unquestionable tone.
"You wouldn't dare!" Fili jumped up like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, spreading his arms to protect the broken machine. "This is the only memento my wife left me! It's my last spiritual support in this damn universe! None of you even think about touching it!"
Chen Feng looked at him coldly and slowly raised his hand.
However, before he could speak, Eve stepped forward to his side.
She looked at Fili and said word by word in a cold but incredibly firm tone:
"If you don't want to die, dismantle it."
This was the first time she had proactively taken the side of Chen Feng's authority.
Fili was stunned. He looked at this silver-haired girl who had always been quiet and seemed to live in her own world, and for the first time, he felt a pressure from her that was no less than Chen Feng's.
Finally, under Fili's tearful gaze, the 'Dream Dancer' was torn apart.
In the engine room, Chen Feng and Eve were like two highly efficient craftsmen. Using the core parts of the 'Dream Dancer', along with Resonant Tubes dismantled from spare communicators and some high-thermal-conductivity scrap, they built an extremely crude yet theoretically perfect Energy Extraction Converter in just half an hour.
"Start it," Chen Feng said deeply.
Eve took a deep breath and pressed the start button.
Hum—
A visible, pure, and powerful stream of pale blue energy was successfully drawn from the sliver. Through that ugly converter, it flowed steadily into the energy storage unit they had prepared.
It was a success.
However, neither of them noticed.
At the very moment the converter started, an invisible ripple of unique high-dimensional energy escaped, like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, spreading outward in circles.
It penetrated the 'lucky dice's' tattered hull and the distorted jump lane, acting like a lighthouse suddenly lit in the endless night, sending an incredibly clear signal toward the depths of the cold, silent, and unknown universe.
