The live broadcast frame froze on that steel platform standing atop the blue waves.
The afterglow of the setting sun cast a golden rim over the sky ladder project's foundation-laying site. His voice reached Smith's ears via simultaneous interpretation: "Today, we are building a bridge on Earth that leads to the stars. In an office at King's College, Cambridge, Professor Smith sat in his leather chair, motionless.

John fell silent.
