134: Chapter 134 A Cat
A moment ago.
Dongcheng City, South Side.
Under several giant searchlights, a special operations unit was stationed three hundred meters away from the dimensional rift.
This distance allowed for immediate crisis response while also avoiding the Disaster Beast' swiftest attacks upon first contact, making it quite suitable.
Currently, surrounding the dimensional rift, one hundred and twenty-eight alchemical long rods formed a cage, imprisoning it there.
Of course, most of them also served as an early warning system and precaution.
In the temporarily constructed operations briefing room, Wei Heng was pacing back and forth in front of his desk.
Lu Li, however, was sitting directly on his desk, slurping his tea.
"Senior, please don't worry so much. If you're really that anxious, should I call and rush them?" Lu Li looked at Wei Heng's conflicted expression and felt his anxiety was unnecessary.
"Forget it, I already sent a message. If Great Senior sees it and is willing to come, he will. If not, then there's nothing we can do."
The message was sent in the afternoon. Logically, Great Senior shouldn't be resting right now.
Since there has been no response yet, Great Senior must have encountered some issue.
Wei Heng shook his head, unwilling to contemplate the outcome he least wished to see.
Lu Li, hearing this, rolled her eyes with great disinterest.
She probably knew what Wei Heng was agonizing over.
But it was hard for her to explain to Wei Heng that the Great Senior likely wasn't unwilling to come; he was probably just so exhausted from the daytime that he was completely spent.
Tap-tap.
Hearing the sound, both of them looked toward Lu Li's phone lying on the desk.
In the next instant, Lu Li picked up her phone, looked at the message sent by Fang Xun, and forwarded the coordinates she had already prepared.
"He's coming."
Lu Li showed Wei Heng her phone, letting him see Fang Xun's message.
Thankfully, Lu Li and Fang Xun's previous conversation had been entirely proper, so Wei Heng hadn't glimpsed anything he shouldn't have.
After seeing the message, the two of them left the simple briefing room together and went outside.
Not long after, a streak of golden light flew in from the north.
The man wearing the pleasant goat mask flew through the air, piloting his little blue-plated Emperor Steed.
When Fang Xun landed, even Wei Heng, a man who had seen great storms, felt a bit overwhelmed.
The great sage armor was so handsome before; what in the world is this now?
But Wei Heng maintained a respectful and enthusiastic smile on his face.
After all, Great Senior also had his own life, and perhaps he rushed over as soon as he saw the message.
"Great Senior," Wei Heng called out enthusiastically, looking at Fang Xun.
"Hey, I'm here."
Fang Xun skillfully stopped his vehicle and locked it with a snap.
Wei Heng glanced at the little blue vehicle and mentally filed it away.
Lu Li, on the other hand, looked at Fang Xun with extreme aloofness, like a proud little peacock.
"Great Senior, please come in." Wei Heng gestured for Fang Xun to enter the simple operations briefing room.
"Please."
Fang Xun responded, and the few of them went inside together.
Wei Heng hadn't called anyone else over. In what was considered the larger briefing room, there were now only three people standing.
"So, what's the situation here?"
The three sat down casually. Fang Xun took the teacup floating near him and took a sip.
"It's a dimensional rift," Wei Heng said, taking out several photos and handing them to Fang Xun.
"This is a dimensional rift that suddenly appeared the day before yesterday.
But this dimensional rift is surprisingly stable. It has been over forty-eight hours since it appeared, and there are no signs of it disappearing.
The dimensional rifts that appeared before were never this stable, and most of them collapsed within eight hours."
"So?" Fang Xun looked at Wei Heng, roughly guessing his thoughts.
"Great Senior," Wei Heng said very respectfully, "Wei Heng wishes to borrow the twelve talismans from you."
This was the result of Wei Heng's deep consideration.
There was only one Great Senior. Setting aside whether Great Senior was willing to take the risk, even if he were willing, Wei Heng didn't want him to go in.
It wasn't that he didn't trust Great Senior's power; it was just that if Great Senior were trapped or perished inside, the situation in Dongcheng City would likely collapse immediately.
The fate of this city rested on Great Senior's shoulders.
Therefore, rather than having Great Senior take action, Wei Heng preferred to utilize the power of some artifacts.
Hmm... also, the twelve talismans were truly too useful.
"That's fine," Fang Xun nodded.
"I happen to have them with me."
As Fang Xun spoke, he pulled out the twelve talismans directly from his pocket.
There were quite a few talismans; Fang Xun had to divide them between two pockets to keep them from looking too lumpy.
Immediately after, he handed the twelve talismans to Wei Heng.
"Thank you, Great Senior." Wei Heng took the talismans, stood up, and bowed deeply with gratitude.
An artifact of this level—Great Senior handed it over so easily.
This trust was incredibly precious.
Seeing this gesture, Fang Xun quickly stood up as well and held Wei Heng back.
"Director Wei, you don't need to be like this. I am also a person of Dongcheng City; if anything happens to Dongcheng, I will certainly help."
This whole display made him feel a bit embarrassed.
"Thank you, Senior." Wei Heng was pulled down by Fang Xun to sit, but he remained respectful.
"Alright, then let's talk about this dimensional rift. Has it shown any activity these past two days?" Fang Xun saw this and had to change the subject.
"Yes, Senior." Wei Heng nodded.
"Currently, small Disaster Beast occasionally crawl out of this dimensional rift. But they all seem to have emerged unintentionally, and they look quite different from the Disaster Beast we encountered before."
"Oh?" Fang Xun immediately became curious. "How different?"
"Well, Senior should see for yourself.", Wei Heng said, lightly snapping his fingers.
Immediately, two soldiers carried a heavy iron cage covered with a black cloth inside.
Upon entering, the two slowly and laboriously placed the cage on the ground before giving a military salute and jogging out.
Then, Lu Li consciously hooked her fingers, and the black cloth was yanked aside.
Upon seeing the light, the thing inside immediately acted as if startled, scratching wildly within the cage.
The steel rebar, as thick as a child's arm, was scratched until sparks flew.
Fang Xun observed it closely: "Is this... a cat?"
Although this thing had eight legs, two heads, three tails, and strange soft protrusions on its body, it was abstract to the point that it didn't seem like something that could be born in this world.
But from the hissing sound it made, Fang Xun recognized it instantly.
This was a cat.
At least, something of the cat species.
"Did it eat a cat?" Fang Xun was slightly confused.
Under the current circumstances, the probability of there being an actual cat here was probably not much higher than him guessing a multiple-choice question correctly on the first try to get a perfect score.
But Wei Heng spoke with an indescribable tone.
"This is the cat."
