15: Chapter 15 Street Racing, Live Broadcast to the Whole City
"Wooo—! Wooo—!"
The night was torn to shreds by red and blue police lights.
In the rearview mirror, a dense line of police cars formed a long dragon, like a pack of hungry steel wolves, biting down hard on this wuling hongguang—a car where everything made a noise except for the horn.
Was this even a pursuit?
This was clearly a doomsday escape straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster.
"Oh my god! I can't do this! I really can't do this!"
In the driver's seat, Pei Ji was shaking all over as if he were breakdancing. Snot and tears smeared his face, and his hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles had turned a deathly white from the overexertion.
The speedometer needle was frantically testing the redline, and the engine let out a heart-wrenching wail as if it were going to explode on the spot the very next second.
"Shut up."
In the passenger seat, Qin Feng rubbed his aching brow. His voice wasn't loud, yet it carried a pressure that made one's bones feel chilled.
He glanced at the real-time holographic map generated by the system in his mind.
Five hundred meters ahead, an S-curve, road width six meters; beyond the guardrail was a construction ditch with a three-meter drop.
Behind them, the riot-control armored vehicle driven personally by SWAT Captain Xiahou Dun was closing in frantically, the engine's roar sounding like thunder.
"It's a dead end ahead!" Xiahou Dun grabbed the radio, his eyes fierce. "All units take note, he's accelerating! He wants to charge through that sharp turn! That's a death wish! Prepare to collect the bodies!"
All the police, all the live-stream viewers, and even Pei Ji himself felt that they were finished this time.
This kind of crappy van, at this speed, taking a sharp turn?
There was only one outcome—flying off and being flattened into a metal pancake.
"Listen for my command."
Qin Feng leaned back against the seat, expressionless, his right index finger lightly tapping the window ledge.
"Three."
Pei Ji cried even louder: "Brother! There's no road there! That's a curve!"
"Two."
Qin Feng's voice had no fluctuation at all, cold as if he were counting down to an execution.
"One."
"Downshift! Pull the handbrake! Hard left on the wheel!"
This shout rang out like a clap of thunder.
Pei Ji's brain instantly went blank.
But his body, under the pressure of Qin Feng's terrifying aura, made a reaction that surpassed human instinct.
His left foot slammed down on the clutch, his right hand shifted into second gear like lightning, followed by a violent pull of the handbrake while his left hand cranked the steering wheel all the way to the limit!
"Screeech—!!!"
The ear-piercing sound of rubber friction instantly tore through the night sky.
At this moment, time seemed to freeze.
In the pupils of tens of millions of viewers in the live-stream room, an unforgettable scene was reflected.
That tattered wuling hongguang, which was even losing its paint, saw its rear end swing violently to the right as the entire vehicle entered the curve in an extremely bizarre sideways slide.
The car body tilted.
The two right tires were a full ten centimeters off the ground!
"Holy crap?!"
Inside the pursuing police car behind them, Xiahou Dun's eyes nearly popped out of his head.
Is that a freaking inertial drift?!
Using a van to pull off an inertial drift that even professional rally drivers wouldn't dare attempt on such a death curve?!
Bang!
The wuling hongguang's rear bumper scraped hard against the guardrail, sending up a shower of dazzling sparks like the brilliant tail of a meteor.
Using that counterforce, the front of the car snapped straight.
"Give it gas! Floor it!" Qin Feng growled.
"Aaaaaahhh!!"
Pei Ji let out a scream like a slaughtered pig with his eyes closed, but his right foot was welded to the accelerator.
Vroom—
The engine roared, and black smoke billowed.
Like a mad bull breaking free from its chains, the wuling hongguang roared out of the curve with a trail of sparks and dove into the narrow, intricate alleys of the Old City District nearby.
Meanwhile, the two police cars following closely behind, because they were going too fast and lacked such god-like handling, saw their brake lights glow a bloody red.
Screech—Crash!
The two police cars squeezed together at the curve and slammed hard into the guardrail, their bumpers shattering all over the ground.
The entire scene fell dead silent.
Then, the live-stream comments went completely insane.
??????
"Who am I? Where am I? What did I just see?"
"Gutter run cornering?! Is that a freaking wuling hongguang? That's clearly the reincarnation of the AE86!"
"Those sparks from scraping the guardrail just now were so cool I nearly ovulated on the spot!"
"Desperado Brother is awesome! The way that driver kid was drifting while crying is too hilarious. Is this the legendary 'Tearful God of Death'?"
"Xiahou Dun: I'm driving an armored vehicle and I lost to a van? Is this scientific? Is this reasonable?"
Inside the car.
Having escaped death, Pei Ji gasped for air, his heart nearly jumping out of his throat.
He glanced at the police lights growing distant in the rearview mirror, then looked at his own hands.
Did... did I drive that?
Am I that awesome?
An extremely absurd sense of ego spontaneously arose.
So I'm not a loser; I'm a God of Racing whose career was delayed by acting!
"What's so hard about that? Just basic operation, don't make a fuss."
Pei Ji wiped his snot, just about to start acting cool.
"Stop shaking."
Qin Feng glanced at him coldly, ruthlessly exposing him: "Your legs are shaking like a sieve; you're about to stomp the clutch into pieces."
Pei Ji: "..."
In the back seat, Su Tang had long since turned into a screaming chicken.
During that drift just now, the car body tilted violently and she was thrown against the door, but not only was she not afraid, her face was flushed red with excitement.
The pleasure brought by the adrenaline surge, mixed with her blind worship of Qin Feng, had completely short-circuited her brain.
"Brother is so handsome! This is so exciting!"
Su Tang clung to the back of Qin Feng's seat, her eyes filled with longing: "Is this what it's like to flee to the ends of the earth? Is this Romeo and Juliet? We're eloping, right?!"
Qin Feng's mouth twitched; he really wanted to throw this girl out the window.
What the hell do you mean eloping?
This is running for our lives! This is a jailbreak!
This five thousand yuan appearance fee was too hard-earned, and he even had to carry two deadweights.
"Don't celebrate too early."
Qin Feng looked at the flashing red dots on the system map, his expression darkening slightly. "The real trouble is ahead."
Just as he finished speaking.
At the end of the alley, the view suddenly opened up.
But just as Pei Ji was about to breathe a sigh of relief, he nearly snapped the brake pedal under his foot.
On the main road ahead, several black SWAT riot vehicles were positioned across the middle of the road, forming an indestructible steel line of defense.
The snow-white beams of searchlights shot straight toward them, so bright they were blinding.
Over a dozen SWAT officers holding shields and riot guns were waiting in formation, their dark muzzles forming a net of deadly fire.
"Stop! Stop immediately!"
A majestic roar came through the megaphone.
Wolves in front, tigers behind.
They were trapped like turtles in a jar.
"It's... it's over..." The bit of ego in Pei Ji's eyes instantly deflated, and he slumped in his seat. "There's really no way out this time..."
"Who says there's no way?"
Qin Feng narrowed his eyes, a trace of crazy light flashing in the depths of his pupils.
He raised his hand and pointed to the left side of the defense line.
There was a construction site in progress, piled high with giant iron bins full of construction waste. A few overturned bins happened to form a slope with an angle of about 30 degrees.
At the end of the slope was an unfinished low wall.
Behind the low wall was another street.
"That's... a trash pile?" Pei Ji was dumbfounded.
"That's a takeoff runway," Qin Feng corrected.
"That's a dead end! That's a wall!" Pei Ji shouted in a breakdown. "Big brother, stop messing with me! We'll die if we hit that!"
By now, Xiahou Dun had caught up from behind. Looking at the wuling hongguang blocked in the middle, a cruel smile appeared on his face.
"Running? Keep running then!"
Xiahou Dun gritted his teeth. "I want to see where you're going to fly this time!"
Qin Feng ignored him.
He didn't even bother explaining Newtonian mechanics and parabolic principles to Pei Ji.
He just reached out, slapped the back of Pei Ji's head, and then grabbed the steering wheel.
"Gas!"
"Floor it for me!!"
Qin Feng's roar was like an angry lion's, exploding within the narrow cabin.
That pressure originating from the depths of the soul caused Pei Ji to lose control over his body once again.
"Aaaaaahhh! I'm going for it!!"
Pei Ji squeezed his eyes shut, using all the courage of his entire life to stomp his right foot hard on the accelerator, nearly pushing his sole through the floor.
"Vrooooom—!!!"
The wuling hongguang let out the final swan song of its life.
It didn't slow down; it didn't surrender.
Instead, like a black cannonball with a determined aura, it charged straight toward that trash pile!
"What is he doing? Is he committing suicide?!"
The SWAT officers blocking the way cried out in alarm, instinctively wanting to back away.
The next second.
The wheels rolled onto the slanted trash bin.
The violent bump caused the car body to emit a tooth-aching sound of twisting metal.
Immediately following.
Airborne.
Under the watch of hundreds of cameras across the city and the stunned gazes of tens of millions of netizens.
That tattered, scarred wuling hongguang leaped high into the air.
It soared over the heads of the SWAT officers and over that low wall.
It traced a parabolic arc in the air that wasn't graceful but was extremely shocking.
Time seemed to move in slow motion.
Through the shattered windows, people could see Qin Feng's face as calm as water, and Pei Ji's face distorted into a gaping mouth.
And that exhaust pipe still dangling from the chassis.
"Is that... a bird? Is that a plane?"
A young SWAT officer murmured to himself, "No, that's... a wuling hongguang."
BOOM!!!
The heavy sound of landing rang out.
The shock absorbers let out an overburdened snap, and the car body slammed heavily onto the concrete of the adjacent street, sparks flying and gravel scattering.
But it only faltered for a single second.
This miracle car of industrial history actually roared to life again tenaciously, leaving in a cloud of mocking black smoke.
Leaving behind only a group of dumbfounded police and the flattened trash bin that had been used as a ramp.
Inside the command vehicle.
The radio in Zhao Shanhe's hand fell to the floor with a clatter.
He watched the taillights gradually disappear on the screen, his lips trembling, unable to say a word for a long time.
Is this a freaking exercise?
This is more like the filming set of Fast and Furious, isn't it?!
In the live-stream room.
After three seconds of silence, the comments erupted in an unprecedented frenzy.
"I'm kneeling!!"
"Newton's coffin lid can't hold him down anymore!"
"I have one of these cars too; where can I get it modified into a plane?"
"Desperado Brother: No road? Then I'll just fly across!"
"Director Zhao: Hurry and summon the Tathagata Buddha... we can't suppress this monkey anymore!"
Inside the car.
Qin Feng wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, glanced at Su Tang who was still screaming frantically, and Pei Ji who had fainted from fear and then been shaken awake.
"Very good."
He leaned back against the seat, a playful curve hooking at the corner of his mouth.
"Phase one escape successful."
"Next... it's time to give these police uncles a real lesson in 'intelligence tax'."
