83: Chapter 83 Take good care of your brother-in-law for your sister.
The reason Chu Xinyi appeared goes back to New Year's Eve.
Chu Ziqing was driving a not-so-new Golf 280, taking Chu Xinyi back to their hometown to celebrate the New Year.
A few days ago, she had been left alone at the ski resort by Shen Lang, but she had happened to meet a man who was both gentlemanly and wealthy.
After that, they met a few more times, got along very well, and had already tacitly established a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship.
This car was what that person had given her for commuting; although it hadn't been transferred to her name, the keys were in her hand, so it was practically the same as her own.
At this moment, she was driving, looking like a victorious rooster.
In their family's backwater hometown, driving a car back was enough to be considered quite impressive.
She was also the only university student and postgraduate in the village, a civil servant in the city, and she was pretty, with one wealthy city dweller after another bowing at her feet.
This trip back home in glory meant shaking off that penniless-looking ex-boyfriend and shedding all constraints; she was already looking forward to the envious and jealous gazes of those country bumpkins in the village.
"Xinyi, how is this car?"
Chu Xinyi had ridden in Meng Yawen's Porsche, so she wanted to laugh when she saw her sister's smug expression.
"Hmm, it's pretty good. Is this your car?"
"You could say that."
"Sis, you don't even have a job yet, how could you afford to buy a car?" Chu Xinyi asked the question a normal sister should ask.
Chu Ziqing smiled even more smugly, "Xinyi, remember this: buying it yourself isn't a skill; making others scramble and fight to give it to you—that's the real skill."
Chu Xinyi secretly curled her lip.
Her sister's words weren't entirely wrong to some extent, but she had clearly twisted them a lot to get the answer she wanted.
Datun, where the Chu sisters' hometown was located, was itself a very poor place, and families with a little money had all worked hard to move to the not-too-distant Chuncheng.
So this car indeed attracted the attention of the neighbors.
"It must be the Chu family's son-in-law back for the New Year again."
"It seems a bit different from the car in previous years."
"Maybe he changed it; city people are just rich."
Watching the neighbors peeking and prying, the corners of Chu Ziqing's mouth curled even higher.
She had always felt inferior about her poor background.
After going to university and coming into contact with people from all over, this situation became even more severe.
She valued money more and more, loved that look of being envied by others, and only wanted to stand in the light.
Father Chu heard the commotion and hurried out; sure enough, his two daughters were back.
"Xiao Shuai didn't come back this year?"
Chu Ziqing replied indifferently, "Ah, Zhao Xiaoshuai and I have broken up. Dad, did you see this car? It belongs to our family; it's my new boy..."
"Say that again, damn you."
The old father's deep voice interrupted the jubilant Chu Ziqing. Seeing the neighbors peeking, her face turned red and then white.
"Dad, what are you doing?"
"It's not like I was sold to Zhao Xiaoshuai; it's perfectly normal for young people to break up and get back together nowadays. You're such a fossil."
"Besides, what can't we discuss at home? You have to give me attitude out here."
Father Chu looked at the neighbors, took a deep breath, snorted coldly, and walked into the house.
Closing the door, Father Chu slammed the table, "Tell me, what's going on? Xiao Shuai is such a good kid; did he hit you or scold you? If there's conflict between young people, just talk it out; don't break up at the drop of a hat..."
Chu Ziqing listened with feigned attention for a while. When she was young, she was very afraid of her father, but after seeing more of the world, she understood what level her father was at in the vast world.
She then lost her awe of her father.
After Father Chu finished nagging, she began to explain in a leisurely manner.
"Marriage is a lifelong matter; it's not that just because he treats me well, I have to marry him."
"What kind of future is there with him?"
"He has no house, and the car is borrowed."
"What about when we have kids in the future? Not to mention formula money, various children's facilities, and school district housing, how can he afford preschool, extracurricular classes, and tutoring classes?"
"Do you want our family to be beneath others for generations to come?"
"I know, he treats me well, and he treats our family well, but haven't I been with him for so many years?"
"Now we have no feelings left, I broke up with him, what's wrong with that?"
"To put it bluntly, he's been with a high-quality woman like me for seven or eight years; isn't that enough for him?"
Father Chu looked at his eldest daughter, so angry he almost fainted.
When did his daughter become like this?
She was just like her shameless mother!
"You, get out!"
"I, Chu Zhongtian, do not have an ungrateful daughter like you!"
Chu Ziqing was also angry. She had already "appealed to his emotions and reasoned with him," so why couldn't he understand?
Forget it; her father had no education, no insight, and was already out of touch with the world, so why should she bother arguing with him?
"I'm doing this so our family can have a better life in the future; otherwise, who would be able to bring you to live in the city later?"
"Ungrateful wretch."
"Do you think I want to keep coming back to this dump of a home? I'm going back to the city first thing tomorrow morning. Hmph."
With a bang, Chu Ziqing returned to her childhood room and slammed the door shut.
Seeing that her sister and father had finished arguing, Chu Xinyi finally emerged from her invisible state.
"Dad, now that you're done arguing, come out and help move some things; Brother-in-law gave them to you."
Father Chu heard his younger daughter's voice and his anger subsided slightly.
The younger daughter was different from the heartless eldest daughter. Although she had no blood relation to him at all, he loved this younger daughter even more.
"Xinyi, is it something from that new brother-in-law of yours again? I don't want it; tell her to take it back."
"What new brother-in-law or old brother-in-law? I only recognize one brother-in-law in my life. It was my brother-in-law Xiao Shuai who asked me to bring this to you," she said, winking mischievously.
Sure enough, Father Chu's anger instantly vanished, and he followed his younger daughter to unload the cigarettes, alcohol, and New Year goods from the trunk one by one.
"These are all things I like; this must have been bought by Xiao Shuai. He knows my tastes and habits; it can't be anyone else."
Father Chu's eyes were a little moist.
Chu Xinyi secretly told her old father everything her sister had done, exposing her completely.
This made Father Chu so angry he almost slammed the table and kicked the door again, but fortunately, she held him back.
"Someone like my sister doesn't deserve Brother-in-law. It's good that they broke up, or she would have ruined the rest of his life."
Father Chu thought it was true, but if that was the case, how could they repay the kindness Zhao Xiaoshuai had shown their family?
He glanced at his own well-behaved and obedient younger daughter, and his heart stirred.
"Xinyi, what do you think of your brother-in-law?"
"Of course my brother-in-law is the best person in the world. Without him, let alone my sister not being able to finish university, I would still be a skinny little bamboo pole."
"Yes, your brother-in-law has the grace of rebirth for our family; the reason we are living so comfortably now is all thanks to your brother-in-law."
Father Chu deliberated for a moment before continuing:
"How about you take care of your brother-in-law for the rest of his life in your sister's place, to repay this kindness?"
Chu Xinyi was rarely a bit shy, tugging at her cuffs, "This, this wouldn't be appropriate, would it?"
But seeing her old father's expression of "never mind, I'll think of another way," she quickly changed her tune:
"But my sister returned kindness with enmity and broke Brother-in-law's heart, so I have to be the one to repay Brother-in-law's kindness."
"It's settled then."
Chu Xinyi was someone who knew how to repay kindness.
Early the next morning, an angry Chu Ziqing insisted on returning to the city. Transportation in their village was inconvenient, so Chu Xinyi naturally followed her sister back early.
But after returning home, she thought of her father's request, and her mood was unsettled, thinking of the stories she used to pester her brother-in-law to tell her about how he met her sister when she was a child.
She went to Zhao Xiaoshuai's university alma mater, wanting to find the locations where those stories had taken place.
She happened to run into Meng Yawen, who was leaving in tears.
