9: Chapter 9 Interrogation
Electric current instantly pierced through his muscles, causing Chen Ye's whole body to convulse violently, every nerve feeling as if it were being seared by raging fire.
The stocks of several rifles were pressed hard against his chest, the cold metallic touch carrying an irresistible sense of oppression.
He didn't even have room to raise his hands to struggle, forced to let the cold handcuffs bite into his flesh.
After all, even if he had awakened a Superpower, he still couldn't withstand the attacks of firearms.
A black hood was slammed down over his head, completely cutting off all light.
Qin Ruoxue's panicked cries exploded in his ears, her voice fragmented and urgent.
But they were completely drowned out by the shouts of soldiers and the roar of vehicles, to the point where he couldn't hear a single complete word.
Chen Ye's heart sank, and he muttered powerlessly, "So they came to arrest us, not to rescue us!"
He could feel himself being roughly shoved into the vehicle, the metal door slamming shut, and the vehicle speeding off, racing along the bumpy road.
The movements were smooth and efficient, without any hesitation.
Darkness, bumps, and oppression made up the entirety of this journey.
Chen Ye didn't hear Qin Ruoxue's voice again after getting into the vehicle.
"It seems they took us away separately, but why split us up?" Chen Ye was full of confusion.
Along the way, Chen Ye kept track of the time; the military had clearly arrested the two of them because they had appeared suddenly, treating them as people with a Superpower.
Fighting back was obviously not an option, but if he were taken to a research institute, he would be done for.
In his previous life, he knew that at the beginning of the apocalypse, The Authorities conducted inhumane research on some people with a Superpower.
A full hour later, the vehicle finally slowed to a stop.
Chen Ye's tense nerves relaxed slightly, "Research institutes are basically all in the city; one hour means we've basically left the city limits."
Chen Ye guessed that he must have been taken to a military base or somewhere else.
After being shoved forward for ten minutes or so, Chen Ye felt himself being led into a room and made to sit down.
However, the chair felt extremely cold to the touch.
The moment the hood was ripped off.
Blinding white light slammed into his face instantly. Chen Ye instinctively squinted, taking several seconds to adjust before he could see his surroundings clearly.
This wasn't a hospital or a prison cell; it was a standard, enclosed interrogation room.
The cold white walls had a harsh sheen, and surveillance cameras were embedded in all three walls.
Directly facing him was a high-powered searchlight, the intense light making his eyes ache.
He was firmly secured to a metal interrogation chair, his wrists and ankles locked tight with special restraints, unable to move.
Behind the metal table opposite him sat a man in military uniform.
He wore thin-rimmed glasses, looked scholarly and refined, with gentle eyes and brows, and his fingertips tapped lightly on the tabletop.
There wasn't a hint of a soldier's sharpness about him; instead, he looked like a civilian staff member.
"Awake?" The man spoke, his tone as gentle as if he were making small talk. "Let me introduce myself first; I am Adjutant Lin from the Special Operations Division."
Chen Ye didn't speak, merely observing calmly.
This was an interrogation room, not a direct transfer to a research institute, but he still couldn't figure out why.
"Let's not waste time with small talk." Adjutant Lin pushed up his glasses, his tone remaining calm. "Who killed the Primordial Strange Beast in the hospital Basement?"
"You and Qin Ruoxue suddenly appeared, vanished into thin air, and then reappeared out of nowhere. Did you awaken a Superpower?"
"If it is a Superpower, is it Qin Ruoxue's? Or yours?"
A barrage of questions came crashing down, every word pointing directly to the core.
Chen Ye lowered his eyes, deliberately tensing his body, putting on a weak and fearful appearance, his voice trembling with the panic of someone who had just experienced a scare: "I... I don't know anything."
"At the time, that nurse lady and I were suddenly trapped in an invisible place, pitch black, and we couldn't move at all."
"That monster was killed by Zhang Hao! The rich second-generation kid who was with us. After he killed the monster, he suddenly disappeared. I don't know where he went either!"
He did not hesitate to dump the blame on Zhang Hao.
In his previous life, he stole his goddess and conspired to make him live like a dog, eventually dying a miserable death. If he didn't frame him now, when would he?
"Qin Ruoxue is just an ordinary nurse, same as me. She didn't do anything, and she doesn't have any Superpower."
A faint smile curled the corners of Adjutant Lin's mouth, clearly disbelieving. "It seems you don't want to tell the truth."
The moment his words fell.
The interrogation chair beneath Chen Ye suddenly emitted a faint buzzing of electric current.
The next second, "Argh!"
Violent electric current instantly swept through his whole body, his muscles spasming uncontrollably, with excruciating pain drilling into his very bones.
Chen Ye arched his back sharply, cold sweat instantly breaking out on his forehead, his teeth chattering and grinding.
He immediately activated his shared Healing Ability, a warm current rapidly circulating through his body, repairing the physical damage caused by the electric current, but the pain transmitted by his nerves could not be eliminated at all.
He gritted his teeth hard, his body trembling violently, his face full of pain, but his eyes remained completely calm.
Pretend, he had to keep pretending to the end.
Adjutant Lin watched his appearance, his tone still gentle, yet carrying bone-chilling coercion: "As long as you tell the truth and tell me what Qin Ruoxue's Superpower is, I will let you go right now."
"There's no need to sacrifice yourself for a woman you barely know. It's not worth it."
Chen Ye sneered inwardly.
Something was wrong.
His memories of his previous life were incredibly clear. At the beginning of the apocalypse, once The Authorities locked onto a person with a Superpower, they would take them directly to a secret research institute for live experimentation, never wasting breath on interrogation.
This meant that the other party was only testing him; they had absolutely no concrete evidence to prove he was a person with a Superpower.
If they really wanted to investigate Qin Ruoxue's Superpower, interrogating her directly would be far more effective than coercing him.
The other party was just bluffing him, testing his relationship with Qin Ruoxue, and testing whether he was actually a person with a Superpower.
He gasped for air, his voice hoarse and angry: "I've already told you the truth! What right do you have to arrest me, what right do you have to use torture?!"
"I'm just an ordinary citizen. You military people are arresting and torturing people without rhyme or reason; if I get out, I will definitely report you!"
The gentleness on Adjutant Lin's face completely vanished, his eyes turning cold.
He didn't speak again, just waved his hand lightly.
This time, the electric current was no longer just a simple electric shock.
A strange energy surged into Chen Ye's body through the chair; it didn't burn like electric current.
Instead, it felt like countless fine needles stabbing fiercely into his limbs and bones, crazily assaulting his meridians.
Chen Ye's expression changed drastically.
He could clearly feel that his Healing Ability had completely failed in the face of this strange energy!
No matter how he tried to activate it, the warm current within his body remained completely unmoved, unable to repair the damage to his body at all.
The excruciating pain surged exponentially, his consciousness began to blur, and his vision went black in waves.
Ten seconds... twenty seconds... thirty seconds.
Chen Ye could no longer hold on; his head slumped sharply to the side, he completely lost consciousness, and he went limp on the interrogation chair.
In the interrogation room, only the buzzing of the searchlight and Adjutant Lin's cold gaze remained.
