20: Contemplation on the ruins and the seeds of new life

The silver platform vanished into the fissure of the ruins, the ancient light completely receding, leaving behind only the lifeless dome structure, as if everything that had just transpired was merely a dream.

But the devastation across the battlefield, the smell of scorched matter lingering in the air, and those fragmented pieces of information stubbornly clinging to his mind all reminded Sun Zheng—this was all real.

He slowly rose and walked to the viewport of the Command Center. Outside lay the severely damaged base: one prism tower was completely destroyed, another was heavily damaged; the patriot missile emplacements were in shambles; the precious grizzly tanks were reduced to scrap metal; although most of the soldiers had survived, they were all wounded, their faces etched with exhaustion.

The cost had been far too heavy. If it weren't for the unexpected intervention of the Ancient Ruins-01, his base would likely have been reduced to ashes in the second wave of the attack.

"Assess the battle damage, prioritize the wounded, recover all usable wreckage and resources." Sun Zheng's voice was slightly hoarse, yet remained steady. As the Commander, he had to maintain his composure.

"Understood, Commander." A001's voice carried a tone of respect. During today's battle, Sun Zheng's several critical decisions and that miraculous 'spatial teleportation' ability had completely won over these system-generated soldiers.

The base, like a wounded giant, began its slow process of self-repair. Engineers busied themselves repairing structures and recovering the wreckage of the Scrin units—this alien metal might hold special value. Soldiers bandaged each other up and cleared the battlefield.

Sun Zheng's consciousness once again sank into the homeworld space. At its center, the fragment of the 'glimmer keystone' still floated quietly, emitting a gentle light. Touching it, those fragmented pieces of information seemed to become slightly clearer.

Silver Ring... interstellar war... Seed of continuation... These words weighed on his heart like heavy shackles. He was just an ordinary person accidentally stranded on the Moon, whose greatest wish was simply to survive and return home. But now, it seemed he had been burdened with the legacy of a civilization spanning millions of years.

"Protect? With what can I protect?" Sun Zheng looked at the small crystal within the space and let out a bitter laugh. With this base that had just been crippled? It had struggled so hard just to fend off a single Scrin advance team.

Confusion and pressure surged over him like a tide.

But soon, another emotion began to replace the confusion—unwillingness, and a fighting spirit that had been stirred.

The Scrin wanted to destroy him, to destroy the potential 'Seed.' Those unknown interstellar civilizations could wage wars spanning galaxies to seize or destroy this ancient legacy. He was like a tiny boat in a storm, liable to capsize at any moment.

But what if he didn't want to be destroyed? What if he refused to be at the mercy of others?

What if... he also wanted to carve out his own place in this sea of stars?

Once this thought emerged, it spread like wildfire. The Red Alert System had given him a foundation to rise. The homeworld space and the glimmer keystone had given him limitless potential. Why must he always react passively to crises? Why couldn't he proactively grow stronger, strong enough to face any threat?

His gaze sharpened. The Scrin threat was an immediate challenge, but the legacy of the ancient civilization might be an opportunity! Those fragmented pieces of technological information, though incomprehensible now, might be slowly deciphered by combining them with the analytical capabilities of the Combat Laboratory? The keystone fragment and the homeworld space surely held more undiscovered abilities!

He would grow stronger! Not only would he restore the base, he would surpass its past state! He would forge this Moon Base into a true fortress of steel, capable of both offense and defense! He would uncover the Scrin's purpose and the truth of the ancient civilization! He would seize control of his own destiny!

An unprecedented determination and ambition burned fiercely within Sun Zheng's heart.

He activated the base-wide communication channel. His voice, clear and firm, echoed through every corner via the speakers:

"Brothers! All who fought for the base!"

"We have just fought a brutal yet brilliant victory! We repelled an unknown and powerful enemy, and we defended our home!"

"That's right, we paid a price, we lost comrades, the base is severely damaged. But this is absolutely not the end! This... is a new beginning!"

"We started from nothing and built this foundation. We have proven that as long as we stand united, there is no obstacle we cannot overcome, no battle we cannot win!"

"I promise you, the sacrifices will not be in vain, the scars will become our medals! We will stand under this starry sky with greater strength!"

"Now, hear my orders: Activate the 'Phoenix' Reconstruction Plan! Prioritize the repair of all defensive facilities and critical structures! Accelerate resource gathering and new unit production! We will, in the shortest time possible, make the base brand new and stronger than ever before!"

"Our journey will not stop here! The Moon is only the beginning!"

Sun Zheng's words acted like a shot of adrenaline, injected into the heart of every base member. Soldiers straightened their backs, Engineers quickened their pace. Grief and exhaustion were replaced by unwavering conviction. A powerful sense of cohesion quietly took root upon the ruins.

Watching the base re-energize, Sun Zheng turned and walked towards the control console. He pulled up the tech tree and building list, beginning to plan the next phase of development.

Simultaneously, he issued new highest-priority tasks to the Combat Laboratory:

[Task One: Dedicate full resources to analyzing Scrin unit wreckage to identify technological weaknesses and energy core patterns.]

[Task Two: Attempt to decipher the energy signature of the 'glimmer keystone' fragment and its connection to the homeworld space.]

[Task Three: Establish long-term observation posts to strictly monitor the Ancient Ruins-01 and any anomalous spatial fluctuations in the Moon's orbit.]

The challenges remained severe, the road ahead still shrouded in mist. But Sun Zheng had found his direction.

Upon the ruins, the Seed of rebirth had been planted. A grand prologue, revolving around an ancient legacy and concerning the survival of civilizations, had only just begun.

Sun Zheng, the Commander of the Moon Base, would no longer be merely a survivor.

He would become... a player in this sea of stars.
