51: The ruins of victory and unsolved mysteries

The violent explosion of the Scrin nest's core was like a nuclear bomb detonating in the heart of Mars. A mushroom cloud reaching into the sky, mixed with purple energy turbulence and Martian red dust, tumbled in the thin atmosphere for several hours before slowly dissipating.

The blast wave leveled everything within several kilometers of the nest's center. The heart-pounding incubation pit, the pulsating giant eggs, and the "overseer" crystal serving as the command node were all reduced to nothingness in the extreme heat and energy release. A powerful electromagnetic pulse completely paralyzed the remaining Scrin defense systems, and the interference field dissipated along with it.

The price of victory was heavy.

Five members of the "Ghost" squad went out, but only three returned. The "Dynamite" Engineer and the "Hammer" soldier sacrificed themselves heroically, remaining forever at the center of the explosion. The "Anvil" soldier was severely wounded; although his life was saved through emergency treatment, he lost his left arm and was removed from the combat sequence. The "Crimson Bulwark" units performing the frontal feint also paid a price of dozens of casualties and several destroyed prism tanks.

The Martian Expeditionary Force bled dry for this victory.

After the smoke cleared, what lay before Sun Zheng was a messy battlefield and an even more complex situation.

The primary task was to consolidate the gains and clear out the remaining enemies.

Without the command of the "overseer" crystal and the protection of the interference field, the remaining Scrin units fell into chaos. Lieutenant Colonel Falcon commanded the "Crimson Bulwark" units to systematically clear out the scattered "Reapers" and "Phase Walkers." The battle lasted for several days, eventually clearing out the Scrin ground forces in the shadow zone of Olympus Mons.

The forward positions of the "Crimson Bulwark" were significantly advanced, finally establishing a relatively safe and sizable foothold on the Martian surface. Sun Zheng officially named this base, bought with blood, "Hope Fortress."

Subsequently, large-scale exploration and recovery work began. Engineers and scouts cautiously entered the core area of the Scrin nest, which had become ruins.

The harvest was enormous. They recovered a large amount of Scrin technological wreckage, especially fragments of the "overseer" crystal and Phase Weapons, which were crucial for the Combat Laboratory's research into countering Scrin technology. More importantly, in the peripheral areas of the explosion, they discovered some fragments of Giant Incubation Eggs that had not been completely destroyed. These fragments still contained powerful life energy and genetic information, making them priceless.

However, the exploration also brought new mysteries.

While clearing the ruins in the deepest part of the nest, the Engineers discovered a massive structure protected by heavy armor and partially buried underground. The explosion had destroyed the upper layers, but the lower structure was largely intact. Preliminary scans indicated this was an ultra-large teleportation beacon or a spatial coordinate recorder.

"Commander, the technological level of this structure far exceeds any Scrin unit we've seen, and the construction style is even more ancient," the Chief Researcher reported. "It doesn't seem to be for incubating combat units, but for locating and summoning something."

"Summoning?" Sun Zheng felt a chill in his heart. Could it be that the Scrin's ultimate goal in establishing a base and incubating an army on Mars was to summon an even more powerful existence? For example, a scrin capital ship?

This speculation made everyone shudder. If that were true, their destruction of the incubation pit had only temporarily interrupted a terrifying ritual, and the crisis was far from over.

At the same time, monitoring of the voyager wreckage in orbit yielded new discoveries. After the Scrin ground nest was destroyed, those small Scrin units that had been patrolling seemed to receive an order; most of them evacuated the wreckage area, leaving behind only a few monitoring points.

This move further confirmed Sun Zheng's suspicion: Scrin activities on Mars were part of an overall plan, and the ground nest and orbital wreckage were likely linked. The destruction of the ground nest led them to adjust their orbital deployment.

Did the interior of the voyager wreckage hide what the Scrin truly wanted? That potentially existing "key fragment"?

Sun Zheng stood in the Hope Fortress Command Center, looking out the window at the vast orange-red plains. The joy of victory had long been replaced by heavy responsibility and deeper anxiety. Although they had won a difficult battle, they seemed to have also uncovered the tip of the iceberg of an even larger conspiracy.

Mars was far from safe. It was like a lonely island in the universe, surrounded by deep space full of the unknown and danger.

"Combat Laboratory, prioritize the analysis of recovered Scrin core technology, especially the spatial teleportation and signal positioning parts."

"Engineering Department, speed up the second phase of 'Hope Fortress' construction, especially the orbital defense systems and deep space detection arrays."

"Reconnaissance units, expand the patrol range and stay alert for any abnormal signals from orbit or deep space."

Sun Zheng issued a series of orders. He knew that rest was a luxury. He had to use this period of relative calm to digest the gains and increase their strength as quickly as possible to face the next, potentially more violent, storm.

He looked up at the Martian sky; that blue home was still distant and peaceful.

"The road home is still very, very long."
