82: The broken cage and whispers in the void

The mysterious old man's words were like a thunderclap, exploding in Sun Zheng's mind.

The true "void whisper" had long since awakened? The Jupiter beacon wasn't a summoning portal, but... a lock for a cage? And Earth's core was a new Anchor Point?

The sheer volume of information was so staggering and horrifying that Sun Zheng couldn't fully process it for a moment. He endured the searing pain from the keystone and the tremors in his consciousness, staring fixedly at the glaring red coordinate on the holographic star map pointing toward Earth's core.

"You... who exactly are you?" Sun Zheng responded with difficulty through his thoughts, while simultaneously signaling Falcon to maintain maximum alert but not to act rashly.

The old man's image stabilized slightly amidst the fluctuations. The purple patterns on half of his face slowly receded, restoring its original blue-gold radiance, but his eyes were filled with an indescribable exhaustion and compassion.

"I was once a member of the 'Guardian' Council; you may call me the 'Watcher'," the old man's thoughts echoed from a distance. "We did not perish entirely, but rather... scattered and hid in another form, observing the movements of the 'Reapers' and the true horror behind them."

He tapped his staff again, and the star map shifted to display a dusty historical recording:

Scene One: The peak of the glorious "Guardian" civilization, where a massive Ring of Order operated and countless starships patrolled.

Scene Two: In deep space, an indescribable consciousness composed of pure chaos and nothingness—the "void whisper"—was discovered for the first time. It was not a physical entity, but a terrifying concept capable of eroding reality and twisting the laws of physics. To imprison it, the "Guardians" exhausted the strength of their civilization to build a massive "order cage," exiling and sealing it within the cracks of the physical universe.

Scene Three: However, the corrosive power of the "void whisper" surpassed all imagination. A portion of its power seeped out, contaminating and twisting a branch of "Guardians" responsible for guarding the cage, turning them into the first "Reapers" (Scrin). These fallen ones worshipped the "void whisper" as a deity; their sole purpose for existing was to break the cage and welcome the full descent of their "Lord."

Scene Four: The "Reapers" began a frenzied attack on the "Guardian" civilization, attempting to find and destroy the seven "locks" that maintained the "order cage"—seven powerful order beacons distributed throughout the universe. The Solar System's Jupiter beacon was one of them!

Scene Five: The "Guardian" civilization eventually collapsed in a tragic war, but the embers remained. Individuals like the "Watcher" hid themselves using methods similar to hibernation or energy states to monitor the actions of the "Reapers."

As the images ended, a tidal wave of shock surged through Sun Zheng's heart! So this was the truth! The Scrin (Reapers) were once part of the order, victims of corruption! And what they had been fighting all along was actually the security system of a "cage" imprisoning a cosmic-level horror? Although this system had become twisted and fallen, its original purpose was actually to protect the physical universe?

"We... we destroyed a 'lock'?" Sun Zheng's voice carried a hint of a tremble. If the Jupiter beacon was one of the seven key nodes maintaining the cage, then its destruction meant... "Yes." The Watcher's thoughts were heavy. "The destruction of the Jupiter beacon has severely weakened the 'order cage.' Although the main body of the 'void whisper' is still imprisoned, the power and influence seeping out are increasing rapidly. It is using the chaotic energy released by the beacon's collapse to accelerate its erosion of reality."

"And Earth..." The old man turned his gaze toward the red coordinate on the star map. "Earth is special. It is not a 'lock,' but deep within its core lies an extremely ancient 'Primal Order Resonance' closely linked to the origin of life. To the 'void whisper,' this resonance is an excellent 'Anchor Point,' helping it to exist stably within the physical universe and even... shape a temporary 'avatar'!"

"The Scrin are spreading tiberium ore on Earth not just to extract resources, but to contaminate and weaken this 'Primal Order Resonance,' paving the way for the descent of the 'void whisper'!"

Sun Zheng felt a chill rush from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. All their previous battles, while temporarily defending Mars and the Moon, had inadvertently accelerated the awakening process of an even more terrifying entity! And Earth, the cradle of humanity, had actually become the next eye of the storm!

"Then what should we do? How do we repair the cage? Or... stop it?" Sun Zheng asked urgently.

The Watcher shook his head, his image beginning to blur. "The 'order cage' is the supreme masterpiece of an ancient civilization. With our current strength, it cannot be repaired. One of the seven 'locks' is lost; the disintegration of the cage is only a matter of time."

"However, it is not without hope." The old man's thoughts became hurried. "Find the other six beacons! Although they may also be under threat from the Scrin, as long as they exist, they can delay the time until the 'void whisper' fully escapes! More importantly, find the 'Seed Vault' left behind by the 'Guardians'! There may be a final weapon against the 'void whisper' there, or... a way to rebuild order!"

"Where is the Seed Vault?" Sun Zheng pressed.

"Coordinates... unknown... need keystone... guidance..." The old man's image flickered violently, nearly dissipating. "My time is short... the energy of this projection is about to be exhausted... be careful... the Scrin hunters... they have already sensed my presence..."

As soon as he finished speaking, the old man's image completely vanished into the air. The white shuttle-shaped ship also launched instantly, turning into a streak of light and disappearing into the Martian sky as if it had never been there.

The bridge was deathly silent. Everyone was speechless, shocked by this subversive truth and the massive crisis that followed.

Sun Zheng slumped into the command chair, cold sweat soaking his back. He had originally thought the Battle of Mars was the end, but he hadn't expected it was merely the opening act of Pandora's Box.

The true enemy was far more terrifying than he had imagined. And their fight had dramatically shifted from a defensive war for the survival of civilization into... a desperate struggle to delay a cosmic-level catastrophe.

He looked down at the still-warm glimmer keystone on his chest and gave a bitter smile.

"It seems... our journey is far from over."

"Falcon, order the entire army to accelerate recovery and repairs. We have a new objective."

"Find the other order beacons. Find the 'Seed Vault'."

"Before the final darkness descends..."
