75: The Mohist Sisters' Heartfelt Words
Night fell, thin clouds hung in the sky, and the moon was bright while stars were sparse.
A gentle breeze blew slowly, helping the weary people brush away the dust of the day.
Flower City, which had endured a day of suffering, fell into a tired sleep along with the night; those who survived the disaster had long since left the shelters and returned to their respective homes.
The Garrison Commander was presiding over the overall situation; the City Defense Force was intensifying patrols just in case; the Academy and reinforcements from all directions assisted in guarding the city; tens of thousands of examinees, under the arrangement of the Old Principal, were temporarily staying in various classrooms.
Except for bored netizens, most people were asleep.
Inside Huajing Residential Area, in Xie Ning's home.
Mo Han lay quietly on the bed, looking very peaceful and beautiful.
Her eyelids twitched, and she slowly opened her eyes. What met her sight was pitch blackness, for it was night after all, but the unfamiliar sensation against her back made her realize that this was not her own home.
Just as she was becoming alert, she heard a familiar snoring sound. Following the sound, she reached out and touched a familiar silhouette, instantly letting out a great sigh of relief.
"Xiao Yu, wake up, wake up..." She gently pushed Mo Yu's head.
Mo Yu raised her head, rubbed her eyes, and mumbled dizzily, "Sister... so sleepy..."
Two seconds later.
With a 'whoosh', Mo Yu sat bolt upright. She rubbed her eyes and saw a pair of large, blinking eyes looking at her with a smile in the darkness of the night, and she couldn't help but be overjoyed.
"Sister! You're finally awake! That's great!"
"You've worked hard," Mo Han said, stroking her head. "Tell me, what happened after I fainted? Was it him who saved me?"
"Mm-hmm." Mo Yu turned on the bedside lamp. By the dim yellow light, she recounted the entire sequence of events in detail: how something had happened at the shop when she returned, how she found Xie Ning, how they chased all the way to the Urban Village, and how a girl named Ding Qiao saved her.
"Sister, you've been unconscious since the afternoon. It was terrifying..." Mo Yu said, unable to help but start complaining.
Mo Han smiled, then suddenly switched off the bedside lamp and, amidst Mo Yu's confusion, pulled open the curtains.
The bright moonlight shone through the window into the room, filling the dark space once more with a soft white glow, adding a touch of tranquility.
The two of them, one sitting and one lying, remained quiet for a few seconds.
"Then how is Xie Ning?"
Mo Yu stood up and quietly opened the door. Mo Han's gaze swept past the doorway, taking in the scene outside.
Beyond the bedroom door was a spacious hall. The pure white moonlight passed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, carpeting the floor in frost. Her gaze focused on the center of the hall.
In the very center of the hall, Xie Ning lay on the sofa, fast asleep. Having endured a day of bitter fighting, his clothes, covered in blood scabs and dust, were already tattered, yet they still stubbornly clung to his body.
By the moonlight, she could clearly see the various scars on his exposed skin—on his face, arms, and legs.
"This..." Mo Han's eyes froze as she stared blankly.
Mo Yu looked at Xie Ning with a face full of admiration. Only after a few seconds did she say, "The Great God fought all day today and is exhausted. After he carried you back, he wanted to rest for a bit, but he fell asleep the moment he lay down on the sofa..."
Unlike Mo Han, who was solely occupied with breeding and taming Demon Tamers Beasts, Mo Yu had been following the activity in Xie Ning's Livestream Room. Although there was a disconnection in the middle, she found out what happened as soon as the signal was restored. Only then did she learn what Xie Ning had done; even what was known on the internet was far from complete.
Despite this, she also knew that the current peace in Flower City, the fact that the examinees could return alive, and a large part of the credit for the entire matter of opposing the Fallen Demon Tamers came from Xie Ning.
Just then, Xie Ning rolled over in his sleep, knocking the blanket onto the floor.
The Supersonic Mantis, who was guarding nearby, lightened its footsteps and stepped forward. It slowly covered him back up with the blanket, glanced at the Mo Sisters, and returned to its original position as if nothing had happened.
Mo Han and Mo Yu looked at each other, both seeing surprise in the other's eyes.
It was truly the first time they had seen such a gentle scene.
Mo Yu closed the door again, and both of them smiled so much their eyes squinted. After a while, Mo Yu's expression suddenly turned serious. She pulled the curtains shut again and, under Mo Han's puzzled gaze, turned on the room's light.
The transition from extreme darkness to sudden brightness made Mo Han's eyes very uncomfortable. She quickly closed them and said in distress, "Xiao Yu, what are you doing?"
"Sister, open your eyes and look."
It took Mo Han a while to adjust to the light. When she slowly opened her eyes, two ancient-looking Scrolls came into view.
"This..."
The moment she saw the Scrolls, Mo Han froze. Her body couldn't stop trembling as she stared fixedly at them, letting tears slide down her face.
"Sister," Mo Yu's eyes were also red, and she sobbed, "we are free."
The word 'free' crashed heavily into Mo Han's heart. Her hands trembling, she took the Scrolls. The moment she opened them, scenes of painful memories from the past rushed out again, as if right before her eyes, as if they were yesterday, yet also seemingly very distant.
"Xiao Yu..." Mo Han gripped the Scrolls and said in a low, raspy voice, "Tear them up."
Two pairs of slender, delicate hands tore the Scrolls up and down, splitting them in two, then pulled again until they were in four pieces. This was repeated seven or eight times. As she tore, teardrops pitter-pattered onto the quilt. Finally, she pounded the paper scraps heavily with her hands and wailed loudly at the top of her lungs.
The emotions suppressed for many years were finally released.
Mo Yu held Mo Han tightly without saying a word, just embracing her.
She knew best in her heart how much her sister had sacrificed over the years; the peaceful life she lived was all because her sister was shielding her from the wind and rain.
Over the years, it was her sister who was beaten and scolded, her sister whose clothes were patched, and her sister who gave up contracting a Demon Tamers Beast to save money. She understood nothing and was always well-protected behind her sister's back.
Mo Han cried thoroughly but also stopped quickly. After a short while, she wiped away her tears and regained her composure.
"Sister, what do you think we should do next?" Mo Yu asked excitedly.
Mo Han already had an idea in mind. Instead of answering, she asked, "How do you feel about Xie Ning?"
"Great God Xie? He's my idol! Among the people I know, no one is more special than him, and no one among our peers can match him. It seems like there's nothing he wants to do that he can't accomplish. Moreover, his words and actions are always correct; it's truly admirable."
Although Mo Yu was puzzled, she still answered seriously.
After listening, Mo Han rubbed her head and said, "Then it's perfect that you're both going to Lingnan Academy. You should continue to follow him and help him out."
"Huh? Sister, what about you? What will you do?" Mo Yu asked hurriedly.
"I need to go back once!" Mo Han said decisively.
Hearing this, Mo Yu immediately became anxious and stood up abruptly, firmly objecting: "Go back where? To Mili Country? That's absolutely not allowed!"
"Listen to me first." Mo Han pulled Mo Yu back down to sit. "Over the years, I've been watching the news and haven't heard of that place being conquered. I want to go back and see if our parents and grandfather are still alive, and I also want to know who exactly harmed us! But you don't need to worry about me. After all, I am an Intermediate Cultivator. If I forge an identity, plenty of people will want to recruit me. Besides, I won't do anything reckless; I'm just going to gather information."
"But..." Mo Yu looked worried.
"No buts."
Mo Yu asked again, "Then... what about Xie Ning's side? I can tell that you like him."
"I..." Mo Han hesitated.
Mo Han fell silent, and Mo Yu didn't speak either.
The light in the room was soon extinguished. The Mo Sisters lay on the bed, each with their own thoughts, and it was unknown when they finally drifted into a heavy sleep.
