50: Chapter 50 Psionic Shield, Charging Under Fire
As Wang Pingan's voice fell, Wang Shan raised his lance a step ahead of the others. Five hundred heavy cavalry lowered their postures simultaneously, and the Martial Dao Citizens behind the shield wall also stepped forward, shattering the gravel beneath their feet.
Wang Mu didn't waste any words. He brought his flag down sharply, and the fifty Psionic Heavy Cannons recalibrated. However, the muzzles did not blindly bombard Kyle's lines again; instead, they focused tightly on the gaps in the front.
Kyle's electronic eyes contracted abruptly, and data streams flickered chaotically.
The three volleys he had just fired were enough to shatter the front line of an ordinary rookie legion. Yet, the Tianhai Star legion before him still had its shield wall standing firmly, with a pale blue shield covering the very front, showing not even a sign of cracking.
"The shield is still up, and there are no casualties in the front line. What's going on?" Kyle stared at the data transmitted from the battlefield. The cannon on his arm was already starting to heat up, but his confidence was dropping rapidly.
His much-vaunted fire suppression had failed to tear through the opponent's lines, and instead, it had disrupted his own initial rhythm.
This was the most feared scenario on the battlefield: the enemy remained composed, while he had fallen into chaos first.
Wang Pingan stood on the high ground in the rear, his gaze fixed on the layer of psionic shield in front, his expression unchanged.
This Grade C portable psionic shield was a trump card he had purchased at a great cost. Originally intended as the final hard threshold for the Nova Assessment, it was now being put to good use here.
Wang Mu turned his head and spoke in a short, forceful tone: "God Lord, the shield can still hold, and the front line can still push forward."
Wang Pingan raised a hand to point forward and issued the divine oracle: "Charge."
With those two words, the momentum of the entire legion changed instantly.
Five hundred Martial Dao Citizens took the lead, raising their Black Iron Shields. Blood-colored Qi spread out along the surface of the shields, while five hundred Cultivation Citizens compressed spiritual energy in the rear. The flames on their crimson flame sabers were compressed into a single line, and the entire Heavy Infantry unit, under the cover of the psionic shield, quickly closed into a wedge formation.
The vanguard did not scatter, the main force did not waver, and the rear did not drag.
They did not wait for the artillery fire to cease; they pressed forward directly against the barrage.
The blue light in Kyle's eyes flashed violently as he issued commands, laced with undisguised urgency: "Front-line mechs, push up! Tanks, adjust your angles! Artillery, elevate twelve degrees and re-cover their path of advance!"
But it was already too late.
Before the first round of artillery fire had dissipated, Wang Pingan's legion had already begun to move.
Five hundred Martial Heavy Armor crushed the craters beneath their feet, shields held horizontally. The entire unit carved a straight line of advance across the ground. Artillery shells exploded above their heads and beside them, flames rolling in wave after wave, yet they simply could not smash into the core of the formation.
The psionic shield stood at the very front; the pale blue light barrier rippled incessantly from the shelling, but it never broke.
Kyle's tank group had intended to use firepower to suppress the opponent's rhythm, but now all that firepower was crashing into the shield. The shield blocked the most brutal impacts, and the infantry behind continued to accelerate.
In this moment, his advantage was effectively choked off at the throat.
Kyle stared ahead, his electronic voice laced with coldness: "Continue firing! Don't stop! Break that shield for me!"
But the battlefield did not unfold as he had anticipated.
Wang Pingan's wedge formation had already pushed into the artillery zone. The Martial Dao Citizens at the front charged with shields raised, while the Cultivation Citizens in the rear continuously poured spiritual energy into the shield and shield wall, making the entire line of advance terrifyingly resilient.
Round after round of energy cannons struck them; the vanguard was only shaken to the point of numbness in their shoulders, but their pace did not slow by even a fraction.
What made Kyle even more uncomfortable was that his own lines were beginning to fall into chaos.
The originally orderly mech artillery positions, in order to adjust their angles to track the shield ahead, began to overlap beams between the rear artillery and front-line tanks. Before the targeting systems of several mechs could be recalibrated, their own firing chains jammed.
"Left flank, move aside! Don't block the line of fire!"
"Center line, elevate! Faster!"
"Don't push too close, or our own men will take splash damage!"
Warnings popped up continuously in the mechanical communication channel. Kyle's commands became increasingly stern, but his position still began to waver.
Wang Pingan's advance was too fast.
It was so fast that before Kyle's firepower could be reorganized, Wang Pingan's vanguard had already charged to within a hundred zhang, braving the shelling.
Wang Shan let out a sudden, loud shout. Five hundred heavy cavalry simultaneously split into two wings. The Iron Hoof Warhorses charged forward, treading over craters. The heavy armor ground against the ground with a piercing screech, and with lances pointed forward, they cut directly into the sides of the wedge formation.
"Left flank, keep up! Don't let the artillery fire slow down the formation!"
Wang Mu stood on the high ground of the Artillery Battalion and waved his flag down once more. The fifty Psionic Heavy Cannons did not cease fire; instead, they continued to suppress the enemy along the path of Wang Pingan's charge, blasting Kyle's front-line position into a cloud of smoke and dust.
Watching this scene, for the first time, a deeply uncomfortable blankness emerged in Kyle's mind.
The more intense his firepower, the faster the opponent charged.
The more his artillery tried to crush the opponent, the more the opponent's shield absorbed all that pressure, pushing the infantry forward by sheer force.
This legion had no intention of wearing him down slowly.
They were determined to crash in while braving the artillery fire.
In the live broadcast room, the Tianhai Star audience was silent for a moment, and then the entire barrage of comments rolled in like a surging waterfall.
"They're still charging after taking three volleys?"
"What on earth is that shield? How can they still keep pushing forward!"
"My god, Heavy Infantry charging through artillery fire—this is too tough!"
Some people shouted until their throats were raw, yet they refused to stop.
On screen, Wang Pingan's Martial Dao Citizens had already run to the center of the crater-filled field. Their shields had been scorched black by the blasts, and their armor plates were trembling from the shock, yet the formation hadn't scattered by even an inch.
Their footsteps were uniform. The wedge formation pressed forward against the line of fire, the ground shattering with every step. Flames rolled past their sides, illuminating the entire legion.
The deep blue light in Kyle's eyes flickered with increasing urgency.
The firepower advantage he valued most had been directly crippled by half by that shield.
The remaining half was being shattered by Wang Pingan's charge by sheer force.
Kyle stared at the shield wall still advancing in the center of the battlefield, his mechanical voice laced with chill: "Wang Pingan, do you think you can break in just by relying on a single shield?"
Wang Pingan did not reply; he simply raised a hand and pointed forward.
The next instant, the wedge formation in front accelerated again. Five hundred Martial Dao Citizens, leading five hundred Cultivation Citizens, braved the sky-filling beams and explosive firelight, launching a direct charge toward the mechanical position.
In the live broadcast room, the audience stared at this Heavy Infantry unit, which was charging wildly through artillery fire and crushing craters, their emotions completely ignited as the barrage of comments scrolled rapidly.
