313: Pediatrics

A night without dreams.

Waking up the next day, Xu Bai was a bit surprised. He had expected to have nightmares, but to his surprise, apart from thinking a lot at the beginning, he had slept very soundly the rest of the night.

Xu Bai guessed that this might be because he had used his brain too much; he might have just passed out from exhaustion at night.

There was a period when he often stayed up late, clutching his phone every night, unwilling to sleep. By the time he finally fell asleep, the phone was still in his hands; he hadn't really fallen asleep, but rather passed out.

After washing up, Xu Bai headed to the cafeteria for breakfast. He didn't see Bai Shan or the Administrator today. Since the two of them wouldn't be accompanying him to the monitoring room today, they were probably still asleep. As for another guess, Xu Bai decided not to voice it.

The weather today was colder than yesterday. He had assumed that it wasn't cold while it was snowing and that it only got cold when the snow melted, but on his way there, Xu Bai saw that another half-meter layer of snow had accumulated on the road—it had clearly snowed again.

This should be a good thing. With the frozen snow covering the carcasses of the mutated beasts that died yesterday, they wouldn't rot even if they didn't have time to collect them. One could say the outside was just one big natural refrigerator.

However, despite the cold weather, Xu Bai noticed along the way that the snow had stopped. It felt like the heavens were on humanity's side.

The snow stopping also meant that their line of sight wouldn't be restricted when attacking, and at the same time, the mutated beasts would be very visible against the snow.

Arriving at the monitoring room for the second day, Xu Bai was already familiar with the preliminary checks, so it didn't take much time.

Xu Bai looked at the monitor screens in front of him. The battle scene inside was much like yesterday's, except that looking at the flesh and blood piling up on the ground and the vanished snowflakes, he knew a day had passed.

He didn't know if they had been fighting continuously or if they had rested for a period of time.

Suppressing his curiosity, Xu Bai sat quietly in his seat from yesterday.

Wu Yunshan was not there today, and other people were sitting in the two seats next to him.

Xu Bai glanced at the two, but since they weren't familiar faces, he didn't speak.

It seemed no one would be answering his questions today.

All morning, the mutated beasts kept advancing, consuming the ammunition of the people on the city wall. Xu Bai wondered if they had reached a stalemate, and he didn't know when this stalemate would be broken.

Xu Bai looked toward Mr. Number Eight, who was sitting in the center, and found his expression very calm, which meant that the situation was still under his control.

At 12 o'clock, it was lunchtime again.

Xu Bai had just taken a bite of his meal when he heard the new shift rotation order issued by Mr. Number Eight.

He saw the personnel on the city wall pull back, and then new people from below filled their places. The newly arrived personnel were wearing uniform dark green military fatigues.

Only then did Xu Bai realize that the clothes of the people on the city wall initially had been black, just with the same style as the dark green ones. Seeing the two together, Xu Bai could finally distinguish the difference in color; perhaps the screen had been too small.

What was the difference between the two?

There were no familiar people next to him today, and Xu Bai felt embarrassed to disturb others, so he had to observe on his own.

Xu Bai chewed the rice in his mouth while watching the movements of the people on the screen.

He saw the people in dark green military fatigues take out different weapons from the card readers, and then their attacks became even more intense than before.

It seemed Mr. Number Eight intended for humanity to be the one to break this stalemate first.

The mutated beasts in front couldn't retreat, and their movements slowed down significantly; for a moment, a large open area was cleared.

At this moment, a batch of mutated beasts of various levels appeared, mixed together.

Were the mutated beasts just going for broke? Did they intend to give up on their formations?

A large wave of mutated beasts appeared, and naturally, the flying mutated beasts appeared as well. Xu Bai's attention fell involuntarily on them; after all, the scene yesterday had left quite an impression on him.

He saw the flying mutated beasts working in pairs, carrying stones, wood, and other objects to hurl down at the people on the city wall. Looking at them, one could estimate that these stones and logs must be very heavy.

The speed of the falling objects, combined with gravitational acceleration, would make these stones have an effect like bombs.

This might be the method they thought of after dropping the tanks yesterday. Yesterday they just dropped them in place, but today they were smarter, choosing to aim for the crowds.

Although there were snipers attacking these mutated beasts, the number of flying mutated beasts was a bit high, and a few always managed to break through the defensive line.

Thus, Xu Bai saw a situation even more tragic than yesterday's.

Compared to today's scene, yesterday's scene was just child's play.

It was really just as Wu Yunshan had said; this scene was even uglier.

There were casualties everywhere above; blood splattered onto the city wall, the snow, and even onto comrades.

Even when things crashed down beside them, many soldiers held their posts and continued to attack, without the slightest hesitation or retreat. They knew that if they retreated, the mutated beasts would advance a great distance, and then more of them would die.

However, one could also feel their anger from the veins bulging on the backs of their hands.

Things kept falling from the sky, and the number of people dying below kept increasing.

Snipers were constantly aiming at the flying mutated beasts in the sky, attacking their weak points, and flying mutated beasts were constantly being hit and falling, only to be trampled into mud.

Because of this wave of attacks, there were several gaps above, which allowed the mutated beast legions below to advance a significant distance; the mutated beasts were now only a short one kilometer away from the city wall.

A distance of one kilometer sounds quite long, but in reality, it's only a few minutes of running. It was only the second day of the war, and compared to the past, the speed of the mutated beast attack this time was faster.

Perhaps this is the change that intelligence can bring.

Although they had no affection for the mutated beasts, they had to admit that the other side had indeed learned some useful knowledge.

Of course, they wouldn't be afraid because of this. Although their own physical strength and combat power couldn't compare to the mutated beasts, they had cards.

cards were not only necessities for their lives but also the guarantee of their combat power. Thinking of the various weapons created by the cards, a surge of courage suddenly welled up in their hearts.

...

"Use tracking shells."

As the voice fell, the two people sitting next to Xu Bai stood up with a swoosh, saluted, and then rushed out.

Xu Bai knew about tracking shells; they could directly select a target for attack, without fear of the opponent dodging. However, Xu Bai hadn't heard of Operation Number Eight, so he could only wait for the operation to begin.

After changing the ammunition, although things would still fall from above, overall, the frequency was reduced by more than two times; after all, sometimes the ammunition would only hit the mutated beast after it had already attacked.

This result was relatively good.

The battle continued.

Another day passed.
