12: Chapter 12 Being a doctor isn't about intuition, it's about evidence.

Lu Chen fell silent.

He couldn't say, "I have a system that can directly see the lesions inside a patient's body."

He would be treated like a lunatic.

"Teacher Zhao, I just have a very strong intuition."

"Intuition?"

Zhao Yaqin repeated the word, her expression somewhat subtle.

"Being a doctor relies not on intuition, but on evidence."

"Your intuition might be right, or it might be wrong."

"But until there is evidence, your intuition cannot serve as a basis for diagnosis and treatment."

Lu Chen nodded.

"I understand, Teacher Zhao."

Zhao Yaqin looked at his face, which was abnormally calm, and hesitated for a moment.

"Has that patient left yet?"

"Probably not yet. Teacher Zhou told him to go to the pharmacy to get medicine before leaving."

Zhao Yaqin thought for a moment and stood up.

"I'll go take a look."

She didn't say what she was going to do.

But Lu Chen knew in his heart that although Zhao Yaqin had lectured him, she wasn't completely at ease either.

For an intern to be able to describe the early atypical manifestations of an inferior wall myocardial infarction in such detail, it at least showed he wasn't just talking nonsense.

Zhao Yaqin went to the Yellow Zone.

Lu Chen remained in the Green Zone, sitting in the consultation room, looking at the empty desktop in front of him.

He was waiting.

Waiting for a result he hoped wouldn't happen.

...

Fifteen minutes passed.

Zhao Yaqin did not return.

Lu Chen vaguely felt that after she went to the Yellow Zone, she must have also been convinced by Zhou Ze's Electrocardiogram results.

After all, the Electrocardiogram was there in black and white, and it said "largely normal."

Another ten minutes passed.

Still no movement.

Lu Chen began to see the next patient in the Green Zone.

A college student who had sprained his foot while playing basketball; his ankle was heavily swollen.

"Doctor, is it broken?"

[Eye of Truth scan: Slight tear of the Lateral Ankle Ligament, no fracture line observed]

"Let's take an X-ray first."

Just as Lu Chen finished writing the examination slip, a sudden commotion broke out in the corridor outside the Green Zone.

Someone was shouting.

"Quick! Quick! Someone fainted! They fainted at the pharmacy entrance!"

Lu Chen's hand stopped.

He stood up abruptly.

The system panel in his mind suddenly popped up a warning.

[Detected a near-death vital sign signal within the range of the enemy of yama title]

[Distance: Approximately 15 meters]

[Vital signs are dropping rapidly; title effect activated, rate of decline slowed by 50%]

Lu Chen rushed out of the consultation room.

He ran through the Green Zone corridor, turned a corner, and saw the scene at the pharmacy entrance.

The man had collapsed on the ground.

It was the thirty-six-year-old man whom Zhou Ze had diagnosed with "neuropathic pain."

His face was already ashen, his lips were purple, he was drenched in sweat, his hands were clutching his chest, and his whole body was curled up on the ground.

His wife was kneeling beside him, screaming.

"Hubby! Hubby, what's wrong!"

"Help! Doctor! Someone please help!"

Two heads poked out from the pharmacy window, looking terrified.

"Quickly call someone from the Emergency Department!"

Lu Chen ran over in a few quick strides.

He squatted down and placed a hand on the man's carotid artery.

The pulse was weak, extremely fast, and irregular.

The Eye of Truth provided updated information at this moment.

[Patient's condition deteriorating rapidly]

[Distal right coronary artery completely blocked by thrombus; large-scale ischemic necrosis of the inferior myocardium]

[Current Status: Acute ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction, complicated by Ventricular Arrhythmia]

[Ventricular Fibrillation expected within 5 minutes]

[Urgent Recommendation: Immediate defibrillation preparation, simultaneously call the Cardiology Department Intervention Team]

Lu Chen's pupils contracted slightly.

He turned and shouted down the corridor.

"Bring the Crash Cart! Defibrillator!"

His voice echoed through the entire corridor.

Several Nurses rushed over at the sound, and one of them recognized the fallen patient.

"Isn't this the one from the Yellow Zone with chest tightness just now? Didn't they say he was fine?"

Lu Chen had no time to explain.

"Myocardial infarction, large-scale MI, could go into V-fib at any moment, hurry with the cart!"

The Nurses reacted very quickly, and the Crash Cart was pushed over within a minute.

At the same time, Zhou Ze also ran out from the Yellow Zone.

The moment he saw the fallen patient, he froze.

"What happened?"

"He fainted, right at the pharmacy entrance."

Zhou Ze squatted down and quickly checked the patient's status.

His expression changed three times within three seconds.

First was shock.

Then suspicion.

Finally, something he himself was unwilling to admit.

Fear.

"Impossible, the ECG was clearly normal..."

He was still saying these words while his hands had already started moving; professional instinct drove him to immediately enter rescue mode.

"Push adrenaline, establish IV access, hook up the Cardiac Monitor!"

The Nurses began to operate with nimble hands.

As soon as the Cardiac Monitor was connected, the waveforms on the screen made everyone gasp.

Leads II, III, and aVF showed a shocking tombstone-like ST-segment elevation.

inferior wall myocardial infarction.

Large-scale.

Progressing.

"What the hell..."

Zhou Ze cursed, his voice trembling.

He finally knew what had happened.

Lu Chen was right.

From beginning to end, every word Lu Chen said was correct.

This patient was indeed having a heart attack.

A false negative on the early ECG and atypical symptoms—all the disguises had fooled his fifteen years of experience.

But they hadn't fooled the intern who had only been there for five days.

Zhou Ze's hands began to shake.

Not because of nervousness, but because of lingering fear.

If this person had already walked out of the Hospital gates.

If this person had already gotten into a taxi to go home.

If this person had gone into Ventricular Fibrillation in the taxi.

That would be a human life.

And the cause of death for that life would be his, Zhou Ze's, misdiagnosis.

He didn't dare think about it any further.

"Notify Cardiology! Immediately! Emergency PCI!"

Zhou Ze roared.

Zhao Yaqin also arrived at this time.

She had gone to the Yellow Zone to take a look earlier and was indeed convinced by the normal ECG results, then went back to the Red Zone to handle other matters.

Now, hearing the commotion in the corridor, she ran out to see that the patient had already collapsed.

Zhao Yaqin took one look at the waveforms on the Cardiac Monitor, and her face immediately changed.

"Inferior MI?"

"Yes."

Zhou Ze's voice was heavy.

Zhao Yaqin glanced back at Lu Chen.

Lu Chen stood to the side, helping the Nurse secure the IV line.

There was no "I told you so" expression on his face.

No smugness, no seeking credit, not even a hint of emotional fluctuation.

He was just working.

Zhao Yaqin felt a mix of emotions.

This kid had just told her half an hour ago that this patient might have an inferior MI.

What she had said then was "without evidence, intuition cannot be a basis for diagnosis."

Now the evidence had arrived.

It had arrived in the form of the patient collapsing.

If she had listened then, even if she had just had someone check one more Troponin level, it wouldn't have come to this.

"Don't think about that now, saving the person is what's important."

Zhao Yaqin pulled her thoughts back and joined the rescue.
