6: Chapter 6 The Emergency Department, Here I Come!
Lu Chen searched his mind for that name.
Li Sen, the Director of the Emergency Department at Jiangcheng City Central Hospital.
A Chief Physician and Doctoral Supervisor.
An established expert who had worked in the field of Emergency Medicine for over twenty years.
Attending Physician Liu Wenqiang continued.
"Director Li is very capable and has a good reputation in the industry."
"But he has a particular trait—he's very protective of his subordinates, yet also very strict."
"If you enter his department, you must never be as reckless as you were last night."
"You have to be honest and start from the basics."
"Once he acknowledges you, then you can slowly show your ability."
Lu Chen: "I understand."
"Do you really understand?"
"I really understand. Keep a low profile first, then show my potential."
Attending Physician Liu Wenqiang was amused by his phrasing.
"You kid, alright. Then remember those words: after you go to the Emergency Department, keep a low profile first."
"Understood, Teacher Liu."
Lu Chen walked out of the office holding the envelope.
Eight hundred yuan.
It might not mean much to others, but for him right now, it was a significant amount of income.
He had already planned it out: six hundred yuan would be sent back to the Orphanage for Director Mother, and two hundred yuan would be kept to buy some books on Emergency Medicine.
Although the system had given him many skills, he still wanted to learn on his own.
The system's things belonged to the system, but his own accumulation belonged to himself.
Walking on two legs is the only way to walk steadily.
...
Over the two days of the weekend, Lu Chen did not rest.
He spent the entire two days immersed in the Hospital's library, flipping through Emergency Medicine textbooks from beginning to end.
He had taken Emergency Medicine courses in medical school before, but back then, he studied just to pass exams, so his knowledge wasn't deep.
Now that he was going to the Emergency Department for practical work, he had to build a solid theoretical foundation.
The system also provided some feedback while he was reading.
[Detected that the host is independently learning knowledge related to Emergency Medicine]
[Learning efficiency bonus: +30% (Due to the host possessing Proficient-level Basic Surgical Operations, related knowledge is understood through association)]
[Mastery progress of Basic Theory of Emergency Medicine: 12%]
Although it wasn't as satisfying as a direct skill injection, gaining experience through independent study made Lu Chen very satisfied.
...
On Sunday night, Lu Chen returned to the small single room he rented.
This room was in an old residential area near the Hospital, with a monthly rent of 1,200 yuan.
There was no living room, only a bed, a desk, a wardrobe, and a private bathroom.
It was a bit small, but at least it was close to the Hospital, just a ten-minute walk away.
He sat on the bed and checked his balance on his phone.
The remaining money in his bank card, plus the eight hundred yuan from Attending Physician Liu Wenqiang, totaled 2,347.28 yuan.
Six hundred yuan of that had to be sent to Director Mother.
That left 1,700.
The 1,700 had to last until next month's salary arrived.
Subtracting the 1,200 for rent.
Only 500 remained.
Five hundred yuan to last half a month.
Daily living expenses would be 33.33 yuan.
Hmm, that's enough.
Steamed buns and pickles for breakfast, two yuan.
Vegetable rice bowl at the Cafeteria for lunch, six yuan.
Instant noodles with an egg for dinner, four yuan.
Twelve yuan a day, 180 for half a month.
He'd still have over three hundred yuan left, enough to buy two second-hand Emergency Medicine reference books.
Perfect.
Lu Chen calculated for a long time on his phone's calculator and nodded with satisfaction.
He was a bit poor, but life was manageable.
Once he entered the Emergency Department and participated in more diagnoses and surgeries, the experience points on the system's side would accumulate rapidly.
When his skill levels increased, there would be even more things he could do.
Once he had the skills, the money would naturally follow.
He put down his phone and lay on the bed, looking at the dim light on the ceiling.
Su Wan's face appeared in his mind.
Then he took three seconds to erase that face from his mind.
"Lu Chen, the thing you need least right now is feelings."
He said to himself.
Then he rolled over and closed his eyes.
Tomorrow would be Monday.
Emergency Department, here I come.
...
Monday morning, 7:45 AM.
Lu Chen stood at the entrance of the Emergency Department's Nurse Station, wearing a white coat that was washed until it was fading but ironed perfectly straight.
The style of the Emergency Department was completely different from the General Surgery Department.
Although General Surgery was also busy, it at least had a rhythm.
Patients were checked when they should be, and surgeries were performed when they should be; everything followed a set procedure.
The Emergency Department was different.
It wasn't even 8:00 AM yet, and the corridor was already crowded with people.
There were parents rushing in holding children, and injured people being supported as they limped in.
There were pale elderly people sitting in wheelchairs, and a young man lying on the ground vomiting after drinking something unknown.
Nurses were incredibly busy at the Nurse Station, phones were ringing one after another, and the printer was whirring as it spat out forms.
After standing in this chaos for three minutes, Lu Chen could already feel the pulse of this department.
Fast.
Urgent.
Chaotic.
But full of vitality.
This was exactly what he wanted.
"Are you the new intern?"
A voice came from behind.
Lu Chen turned around and saw a woman in a white coat standing behind him.
She looked to be in her early thirties, with short hair, no makeup, and an expression of efficiency and indifference cultivated by years in the Emergency Department.
Her name tag read: Zhao Yaqin, Emergency Department, Attending Physician.
"Hello Teacher Zhao, I'm Lu Chen, rotating here from General Surgery."
Zhao Yaqin looked him up and down, her gaze lingering on his face for an extra half-second.
"You look quite energetic. How were your internship grades in General Surgery?"
"They were alright."
"What does 'alright' mean? Excellent or Good?"
"Excellent."
Zhao Yaqin raised an eyebrow slightly.
There were only two or three interns a year who received an 'Excellent' rating from General Surgery; it seemed this kid really did have some skill.
"Alright, you'll follow me. Today you'll first get familiar with the department's workflow. I'll only say the rules of the Emergency Department once, so remember them well."
"Understood, Teacher Zhao."
Zhao Yaqin took him for a walk around the Emergency Department, explaining as they went.
"The Emergency Department is divided into three zones."
"The Red Zone is the Resuscitation Room, which handles the most critical patients—cardiac arrest, massive hemorrhaging, and severe trauma are all here."
"The Yellow Zone is the Observation Room, where patients whose conditions are relatively stable but still need observation are kept."
"The Green Zone is for general emergencies, where minor issues like headaches, fevers, and diarrhea are handled."
"As an intern, you can only stay in the Green and Yellow Zones for the first two weeks."
"You will do basic Triage, Consultations, and write medical records. You are not allowed to enter the Red Zone."
"Resuscitation in the Red Zone requires at least the level of Resident Physician to participate. Do you understand?"
"Understood."
Zhao Yaqin glanced at him, her tone softening slightly.
"Also, the Emergency Department is unlike other departments."
"The patients and their families here are more emotional. You must pay attention to communication when handling things, and never get into a conflict with the family members."
"If there's anything you can't handle, find a superior doctor immediately."
Lu Chen: "Understood."
"One last thing." Zhao Yaqin stopped walking and turned to face him.
"Director Li is coming for an inspection this afternoon. He will talk to every new intern, so be prepared."
Lu Chen's heart skipped a beat.
Li Sen.
The person Attending Physician Liu Wenqiang specifically told him to watch out for.
"Thank you for the reminder, Teacher Zhao."
Zhao Yaqin didn't say anything more and turned to attend to a patient.
