32: Chapter 32 So this is what a truly powerful ranged DPS class is like.

The bus bounced along the desolate country road, the scenery outside the window fading from the plane trees of Wei City into withered, yellowed meadows.

Further ahead, even the grass became sparse, leaving only cracked brown wasteland covered in a thin layer of white frost.

Hu Jinsi pressed his face against the glass, his breath condensing into mist on the pane.

He wiped it away, suddenly noticing a familiar pale red vortex slowly rotating on the distant horizon.

"Is that... the entrance to the Blood Moor?" He turned his head and pointed outside.

Liu Betti was sitting on the other side of the aisle, head bowed as she wiped her short bow with a piece of deerskin.

Hearing this, she looked up, her mixed-race features appearing particularly sharp in the morning light: "Correct. The two dungeon entrances aren't far apart. It's normal for different areas of the same world fragment to be close to each other."

"We actually didn't notice it at the time," Su Wan said, speaking with the benefit of hindsight. "We were just too nervous."

Liu Betti plucked her bowstring lightly, testing a crisp note, and said casually: "That dungeon won't last much longer either. With Wei City students farming it at such high intensity, I estimate that by the end of next month, the Blood Moor will completely shatter and be absorbed by Water Blue Star."

"That soon?" Lin Rui looked up from his notebook, which contained the list of cold-weather supplies he had prepared.

"It will disintegrate once its energy is exhausted." Liu Betti shrugged. "That is the fate of a dungeon. Either it gets farmed empty by us, or it turns into a cancer of the world and gnaws back at Water Blue Star. The Blood Moor belongs to the former, which, from our perspective, is a good end."

The bus stopped in front of the entrance to the Cold Plains.

Unlike the desolation of Raccoon City, this place was significantly livelier.

A dozen buses with various school logos were parked sporadically, and students gathered in twos and threes in front of the pale blue vortex at the entrance, some checking their equipment, others exchanging intel. The air was filled with a vibrant, market-like bustle.

"Quite a lot of people," Hu Jinsi said, jumping off the bus. His boots crunched softly as he stepped onto the frosted ground.

"The business with Zhao Lei was, after all, his own mistake." Liu Betti slung her bow over her shoulder, the arrows in her quiver clattering softly with her movement. "It only unsettled everyone for a week or two. In the aftermath, people aren't stupid, especially those with classes inclined toward purifying undead and demons; this dungeon is very tempting to them. Plus, materials dropped by demons are always valuable, so many teams come here even if not for the experience, but for the materials."

She paused, her gaze sweeping over a group of students in Second High School uniforms nearby, and lowered her voice: "Moreover, the future planning for solo players is different from you all who run in fixed teams. Many times, we form temporary parties at the dungeon entrance, and inter-school teaming is also very common. Conflicts between schools aren't that important; at least in the dungeon, everyone cares more about whether classes can complement each other."

Su Wan leaned in curiously: "Is it safe to form parties like that? How do you fight without synergy?"

Liu Betti smiled, a smile that carried a nonchalance beyond her years: "Many of us are people who have confidence in our own classes. As for whether it's safe, at this level, what kind of drops could there be that would make people covet them? The world consciousness of Water Blue Star is watching, and no one dares to do anything too outrageous. As for verbal disputes..." She spread her hands. "Just the price of growth."

"What about combat?" Hu Jinsi asked. "Four people thrown together, not familiar with each other's skills—how do you fight?"

"Generally, you still want to form parties with complementary classes," Liu Betti explained. "Everyone is just there to fight mobs, at most elite monsters, so the requirement for synergy isn't that high. You wouldn't form a party of four Bards, right?"

Su Wan imagined the scene of four Bards hugging their lyres and buffing each other, and couldn't help but laugh out loud.

When the pale blue vortex spat the four of them out, it brought with it a bone-chilling wind.

Cold Plains.

The sky was an oppressive leaden gray, like a thick cloth soaked in ice water pressing down low overhead.

The ground was no longer the cracked brown earth of the Blood Moor, but covered in a thin layer of frost that crunched underfoot; occasionally, one could crush the ice crust hidden beneath the frost, revealing the dark brown frozen soil underneath.

Withered trees in the distance hung with icicles, their branches twisted like struggling arms, pointing toward the gray sky.

The wind was cold, carrying a faint scent of sulfur and a deeper, sickly sweetness, as if corpses were frozen beneath the ice.

Hu Jinsi hunched his shoulders. He was wearing a thick cotton jacket bought from a store over his school uniform, but the cold wind still poured in through the collar.

He breathed out a puff of white air, watching it dissipate rapidly in the air: "This place is definitely below zero."

"The map is randomized every time we enter." Liu Betti took a raven-feather hood from her backpack and put it on; the jet-black feathers at the edge of the hood trembled slightly in the wind. "The entry point is fixed every time, but unfortunately, it doesn't have much reference value. If the map here had been fully mapped out, everyone would have long since avoided the boss monsters and happily farmed the mobs in other areas. So don't count on me to lead the way. I suggest we first find the Underground Cave; that's where the monster density is highest, and there's a guaranteed elite monster on the second floor, so at least there's some hope for drops."

"A cave again." Hu Jinsi muttered. "Last week the sewers, this week a cave—I must have a connection to underground spaces."

"This cave is not like the sewers." Liu Betti hopped onto her bicycle. "It's quite spacious—at least enough for you to swing your long staff."

The four of them pedaled their bicycles, wandering aimlessly across the wasteland.

The tires rolled over the frosted ground, making a fine crunching sound.

The monster types in the Cold Plains were indeed similar to the Blood Moor—Zombies, Fallen, Quill Rats—but there was a new type of enemy: the Dark Rogue. They wore tattered dark leather armor; some rushed up to engage in melee with rusted short swords, while others drew short bows from a distance, firing cold arrows silently from the wind and snow, specifically targeting the seemingly weakest link in the party.

"These archers are so annoying!" Su Wan held her lyre, dodging to the side to avoid an arrow shot from the shadows.

The arrowhead grazed her ear and embedded itself into the withered tree trunk behind her, its fletching still buzzing and trembling.

Liu Betti did not get off her bike. She let go of the handlebars with both hands, pulled an arrow from her quiver with one hand, and gripped her short bow with the other. Nocking, drawing, and releasing—the motions were as fast as a pre-programmed sequence.

The arrow pierced the air, accurately striking the face of a Dark Rogue thirty meters away that was aiming at Su Wan. The monster fell to the ground in response, dissipating into points of light.

"Thanks! And that move was super cool!" Su Wan shouted.

"Don't stop, keep riding!" Liu Betti fired another arrow, pinning another low-level Fallen attempting to flank them from the side to the ground. "Let's find the path first!"

After some chasing and skirmishing, the four finally shook off the group of pursuers behind them.

Liu Betti had sharp eyes and pointed to a path in the distance paved with crushed stones: "Look, a path!"

The path wound between the frozen soil, the stones covered in moss and thin ice, clearly a passage trampled out by countless footsteps.

"Follow the path," Liu Betti explained. "It might lead to the Underground Cave, or it might lead to the Burial Grounds or the Stony Field. But regardless of which one, the path is the fastest way to guide you to the next area."

The four of them were lucky. After cycling along the gravel path for about twenty minutes, a pitch-black cave entrance appeared under the rock wall ahead.

The entrance was about three meters high and nearly four meters wide. Looking inside, the fluorescent moss on the rock walls emitted a faint green light, and one could vaguely hear the signature gibberish of the Fallen coming from deep within.

"Underground Cave." Liu Betti squeezed the brakes and stopped. "We're here."

Hu Jinsi pulled two spare headlamps from his backpack and tossed one to Lin Rui and one to Su Wan: "Learning from last week's lesson. If the main light runs out of power, switch it immediately; don't go fumbling in the dark."

"How many did you bring?" Su Wan took the headlamp and checked the batteries.

"Four." Hu Jinsi patted his backpack. "I even brought a pack of spare batteries. That time in the sewers gave me psychological trauma."

The space inside the cave was indeed much more spacious than the sewers.

The rock walls were made of grayish-white limestone, reaching up to four meters high, and the width could accommodate two trucks driving side-by-side.

The air was filled with a damp, moldy smell and a faint scent of sulfur.

The beams of the headlamps swept across the rock walls, revealing the outlines of stalactites and scattered bone fragments on the ground.

"This place..." Hu Jinsi slung his iron-reinforced long staff over his shoulder, finally able to straighten his back. "Finally, I can swing my staff."

But the Dark Archers immediately gave him a rude awakening.

The four of them had barely penetrated fifty meters when several cold arrows were shot from the shadows high up on the rock wall.

The arrowheads flashed and vanished in the beams of the headlamps.

Hu Jinsi barely managed to tilt his head to dodge one, while another grazed the outside of his thigh, tearing a gash in his police uniform trousers.

"There are some above!" Lin Rui raised his riot shield—the one brought from Raccoon City that he had paid to have repaired. The transparent upper part was embedded with a firing port. Lin Rui held the shield, blocking in front of Su Wan and Liu Betti.

An arrow nailed into the shield face with a crisp "clang," the arrowhead wedged in the gap of the riot layer, vibrating Lin Rui's wrist until it went numb.

"These Dark Archers..." Hu Jinsi gritted his teeth, the knuckle-duster bone blades on his right hand popping out. "Are really fucking annoying."

Internally, he was complaining like crazy: If only I had chosen Deflect Arrows back then! That perk at level 1 looks like a god-tier skill now; deflecting a ranged attack every three seconds—how much error tolerance would that add in a place like this? A resolution to "definitely next time" echoed repeatedly in his mind. But verbally, he could only grumble as he activated [Parkour], using the burst of speed to climb up the protrusions on the rock wall to clear out the archers stuck in the high spots.

And what truly shocked the three of them was Liu Betti's damage output.

A Fallen darted out from behind a stone pillar, waving a club and gibbering as it charged toward Lin Rui.

Liu Betti stood behind the riot shield, not even moving her feet half a step. She drew an arrow, nocked it, and pulled back fully—

"Whoosh!"

The arrow pierced through the air, accurately penetrating the Fallen's throat.

The little demon didn't even get a scream out before it dissipated into points of light.

[-14]

Immediately after, a Fallen Shaman in the distance raised its wooden staff, the dark red crystal at the tip of the staff beginning to condense a fireball.

A flash of red light flickered in Liu Betti's quiver—[Fire Arrow]! Fire magic adhered to the arrow, the bowstring vibrated, and the arrow tore through the air trailing an orange-red tail flame, striking the Shaman squarely in the chest.

The flames burst, and the Shaman stumbled backward. A second fire arrow followed closely, nailing it in the face.

[-12] [-13]

The Fallen Shaman fell to the ground, turning into black smoke.

The entire process took less than three seconds.

Liu Betti stood in place like a precise remote execution machine, her fingers drawing the string with a fluidity that was almost elegant.

"...One arrow per Fallen?" Hu Jinsi jumped down from the rock wall, watching the black smoke that hadn't yet dissipated, the corner of his mouth twitching. "Two arrows per Shaman?"

"Normal shots for mobs, fire arrows for elites." Liu Betti pulled out another arrow, her gaze locked on another Fallen in the distance attempting to flee. "Their health points aren't high."

Su Wan and Lin Rui exchanged glances, both of their eyes filled with shock.

They had prided themselves on their team's synergy and flexible tactics, but only now had they witnessed up close just how terrifying the damage of a dedicated ranged attack class could be.

The group of Fallen that took Hu Jinsi forever to clear with his Spinning Crane Kick were, before Liu Betti, like wheat waiting in line to be harvested.

"Before... were we getting a bit carried away?" Su Wan muttered softly, her fingers unconsciously gripping the strings of her lyre.

Hu Jinsi hoisted his long staff onto his shoulder, rarely failing to retort.

The past few weeks of smooth sailing had indeed bred some hidden arrogance in them.

The pig-tripping tactic, killing fish-men with campfires, mowing down zombies with submachine guns—they always felt they had found shortcuts to the dungeons.

But Liu Betti's stationary output efficiency was like a basin of ice water, dousing their bit of arrogance completely.

"Perhaps we are just a group of people who are better at utilizing tactics," Hu Jinsi said in a deep voice, his tone carrying a rare clarity, "rather than the strongest group of people."

Of course, Liu Betti's class was not without its flaws.

When another wave of Dark Archers fired simultaneously from both sides of the rock wall, she had to stop her output and dodge to the side, hiding behind Lin Rui's riot shield.

"In my past battles, I always had dual defensive classes to deal with ranged enemies." Liu Betti leaned against the shield, quickly changing her quiver. "This time is no exception. So please, Lin Rui, help me Block."

The formation changed subtly because of this.

Lin Rui was no longer the main attacker charging into the fray, but had become a pure protector.

He held the riot shield in one hand and a submachine gun in the other, the shield face always oriented toward the greatest threat, shielding Liu Betti and Su Wan from stray arrows.

The transparent firing port allowed him to observe the enemy situation while blocking, occasionally thrusting his gun out from beneath the edge of the shield to pick off approaching zombies.

"This shield..." Lin Rui shook his numb wrist after a Block, looking down at the two arrows embedded in the riot shield. "It's more useful than tower shields and round shields. At least in this dungeon, it's a divine artifact."

"After we get out, I plan to acquire another one." He added, his tone carrying the excitement of discovering a new world. "Every shield has its own application."

Hu Jinsi had thoroughly shifted into a roaming position. He wove through the perimeter of the Underground Cave with his long staff, specializing in dealing with Dark Rogues that flanked them, or chasing down Fallen that tried to escape to call for reinforcements. Occasionally, a fish that slipped through the net would break past Lin Rui's shield line, and he would cut in with a [Roll], driving his knuckle bone blade into the back of its head.

During lulls in combat, the four of them tallied the drops. The Cold Plains inherited the stingy tradition of the Blood Moor; most weapons and armor were prefixed with "Cracked" or "Worn," and their stats were outrageously low. The only things worth calling loot were arrows and throwing knives: Hu Jinsi replenished five sets of throwing knives, while Liu Betti and Su Wan each replenished nearly five sets of arrows.

"By that calculation," Su Wan said, counting on her fingers, "Liu Betti has almost zero combat costs in this dungeon? The only thing she consumes is arrows, and the arrow drop rate in this dungeon is so high..."

"Self-sufficiency." Liu Betti smiled as she picked up a set of usable arrows from beside a Dark Rogue's corpse and tucked them back into her backpack. "The Rogue class really is like a chosen daughter in this series of dungeons."

Su Wan sighed, "If Zhao Lei's team hadn't sabotaged you back then, your progression would probably be even stronger than the three of us."

Liu Betti's fingers paused on the bowstring, her eyes dimming for a moment before returning to normal. "Let's not talk about the past. At least I'm strong now."

Lunch was eaten at the entrance of the Underground Cave.

The temperature in the Cold Plains was too low, so the four of them didn't gnaw on compressed biscuits. Instead, they pulled out high-calorie food prepared in advance: cans of piping hot beef soup, hot chocolate, and even a few pieces of sugar-coated fried dough. With the hot food in their stomachs, their frozen fingers finally regained their flexibility.

"Let's exchange skill information." Lin Rui held his hot chocolate, white steam rising from the rim of the cup. "Since we're going to coordinate, we need to know each other's trump cards."

Liu Betti was very candid. She demonstrated her talent [Potential Activation]—by injection or acupressure, she could increase a teammate's movement speed or attack frequency for a short time, but they would fall into a brief state of fatigue afterward. She then explained her skills one by one: [Fire Arrow] (flame-enchanted arrows, bonus damage plus hit chance), [Inner Sight] (illuminates surrounding enemies, reduces their stealth, provides lighting), [Fire Conversion I] (converts a small amount of physical damage to fire damage), [Inner Sight Enhancement - Armor Piercing I] (reduces enemy defense within the Inner Sight range), and [Multishot] obtained at level 6 (splits one arrow into two fired in a fan shape, each dealing 75% of the original damage).

"Multishot splits into two right now." Liu Betti gestured. "One more for every five levels."

"Fan-shaped AOE..." Hu Jinsi's eyes lit up. "Combined with the armor reduction from Inner Sight, our mob clearing efficiency can go up even further."

The four sat behind a wind-sheltered rock, using stones to draw a simple tactical map on the ground. A new division of labor was quickly finalized:

Hu Jinsi took [rixats elegy] from Lin Rui, mainly because the magic dagger's illumination field was much better than a headlamp. His position changed to the team's peripheral scout, responsible for clearing out Dark Archers on high rock walls and intercepting high-speed enemies trying to flank or escape.

Liu Betti stood in the center of the team, becoming a pure stationary turret under the protection of Lin Rui's shield. Her duties were to snipe slow-moving cluster targets, hunt down escaping Fallen, and prioritize dealing with Fallen Shaman. [Multishot] was for AOE, and [Fire Arrow] was for elites.

Su Wan's main task became a buff machine. She kept the melody of [Heroism] enveloping Liu Betti and Lin Rui, boosting their strength and hit chance. The rest of the time, she would either use her police light crossbow to assist with precision shots or use the terrain to sing loudly, using her voice to attract the monsters' attention and share the aggro pressure on Liu Betti.

Lin Rui's task was the simplest, yet the heaviest: stand in the middle, raise the shield, and protect the two ranged characters. The riot shield's coverage area was enough to cover both of them, and the firing port allowed him to output with his rifle between Blocks. He didn't need to Charge into the fray anymore; he just needed to be a moving wall.

"This formation..." Hu Jinsi looked at the sketch on the ground and smacked his lips. "A typical three-protect-one tactic."

"Finally looking like a regular army." Lin Rui downed the last of his hot chocolate, stood up, and brushed the dust off his backside. "Shall we try it?"

The effect of the new tactic was immediate.

The four re-entered the depths of the cave. Lin Rui's riot shield was at the very front, the shield face slightly tilted, taking all arrows and spells from the front. Liu Betti stood two steps behind the shield, drawing her Soul-Siphon Short Bow to full tension, [Inner Sight] activated! A circle of pale red shimmer spread out from her as the center, and the enemies in the shadows of the rock walls were instantly marked with pale red outlines, their defense simultaneously weakened.

"Multishot!"

The bowstring vibrated, and after the arrow left the string, it split into two streaks of light in mid-air, shooting into the group of Fallen ahead in a fan shape. The two arrows pierced through the chests of two Fallen, [-10] [-9], and points of light rose simultaneously. Immediately after, she switched to [Fire Arrow], and an arrow trailing flames nailed into the wooden staff of a distant Fallen Shaman. The flames burst, forcibly interrupting the Fireball spell it was channeling.

Su Wan's lyre played [Heroism], the impassioned melody echoing within the cave. Liu Betti felt the strength in her arms swell slightly, and her bow-drawing speed became half a beat faster. Once Su Wan finished applying the buff, she immediately raised her light crossbow and nailed an arrow into the eye socket of a skeleton creeping in from the side, [-6]. Although the damage wasn't high, it successfully attracted its attention, making it deviate from the path it was taking to pounce on Liu Betti.

Hu Jinsi was like a swallow flying close to the ground, roaming the perimeter of the cave. He activated [Parkour], doubling his speed, and with a leap, climbed onto a three-meter-high rock platform. The blue light of rixats elegy surged, and he stabbed his sword into the back of a Dark Archer's neck, [-14]. Before the monster could even turn around, it fell from the rock wall. He took advantage of the momentum to leap down, landing right in the middle of a group of Fallen below.

With Qi gathered in his Dantian and standing on one foot—

[Spinning Crane Kick], activate!

The 0-Qi activation cost meant he didn't need to worry about his Qi pool hitting empty. His body began to spin like a top, leg shadows turning into arcs, and the knuckle bone blade and magic dagger struck alternately during the rotation, [-11] [-10] [-12]. The surrounding Fallen were swept into this sudden whirlwind, like fruit thrown into a blender, turning into points of light amidst their screams.

Three seconds ended, and he spent another point of Qi to continue. Another three seconds.

The limited visibility and chaotic battle situation inside the cave perfectly masked the abnormality of this overpowered skill. His teammates' attention was all on their own output and defense; no one had the energy to count how many times he spun or how many points of Qi he consumed. White healing mists constantly rose within the rotation, slowly restoring the health Lin Rui lost while blocking.

The combat turned into an efficient assembly line operation. Lin Rui's shield was the chassis, Liu Betti's arrows were the main shaft, Su Wan's lyre music was the lubricant, and Hu Jinsi's guerrilla tactics were the janitor. It took the four of them less than two hours to clean the first level of the Underground Cave completely, with even the fluorescent moss on the rock walls shaking off due to the aftermath of the battle.

When the last skeleton shattered into bone dust under Liu Betti's [Fire Arrow], a hollow sound of wind came from the depths of the cave. Hu Jinsi's headlamp swept over, illuminating a downward slope; that was the entrance to the second level.

The four gathered in front of the slope to take a short rest. Liu Betti checked her quiver, finding more arrows than before; Lin Rui's riot shield had seven or eight arrows stuck in it, like a hedgehog; Su Wan's lyre strings were slightly warm, a normal reaction after continuous spellcasting; Hu Jinsi's Qi pool had three points left, enough to handle emergencies.

"What's the situation on the second level?" Lin Rui asked.

Liu Betti crouched at the edge of the slope, tapping the rubble on the ground with an arrowhead: "The area is smaller than the first level. The only feature is that the second level always spawns a ranged elite monster."

"What about the drops?" Su Wan asked.

"There might be surprises, but most of the time it's very mundane." Liu Betti shrugged. "Also, there's a probability of a treasure chest appearing. But don't have high expectations for what's inside; it's mostly health and mana potions characteristic of this world fragment, along with some explosive potions, deadly poison potions, and the like. The rest are just white-grade equipment. Anyway, I've never opened anything with special effects from a chest."

"Ranged elite..." Lin Rui touched the firing port on his riot shield and glanced at his rifle's magazine. "Perfect timing to test the limits of the shield-and-gun combo."

"Then let's go down." Hu Jinsi hoisted his long staff onto his shoulder, his headlamp's beam piercing the darkness below the slope. "Finish early, clock off early. Although this place is more spacious than the sewers, it's still oppressive if you stay too long."

The four stepped onto the slope leading to the second level one by one. The temperature on the rock walls seemed to be even lower, and the white breath they exhaled condensed into tiny ice crystals in the beam of the headlamp, drifting away slowly with their footsteps.
