49: Chapter 49 It's Raining

Just as Zhou Sanlang was explaining the promotion conditions for each rank of Martial Artist to Chen Mo, Xueni had already put down the luggage of the last child.

"Grandpa Director, when can we go back?"

A little boy who looked to be only four or five years old tugged at Director Gu Sanding's trouser leg and asked with teary eyes.

"This will be our new home from now on."

Director Gu Sanding picked the little boy up and gently pinched his cheek.

"Then, what will happen when Brother Mo comes back later?"

"Will he not be able to find home?"

The little boy was somewhat worried; he couldn't even care about the sadness of moving anymore.

"He won't. After his Provincial Joint Examination ends, I will tell Brother Mo."

"Xueni, give them a call and ask when the television will arrive..."

Before Director Gu Sanding could finish his sentence, his phone rang.

"Hello?"

"It's been delivered. Where did you have the television sent?"

Director Gu Sanding nodded in a daze before hanging up the phone. After a careful and earnest recollection, he realized that he seemed to have forgotten to change the delivery address...

The Chenguang Orphanage in the Old District was nearly eighty kilometers away from the new Orphanage in the New District, and a round trip would take nearly three or four hours...

"Well, Officer Li..."

Director Gu Sanding gave an awkward cough. He had specifically asked the delivery company for expedited shipping, which is why it was delivered in the middle of the night.

As it turned out, it was sent to the wrong place. Getting old really makes one useless.

"I understand, Director Gu."

Officer Li didn't say anything, just smiled and nodded.

Since the higher-ups had sent him and Officer Zhao here to be responsible for protecting the Chenguang Orphanage, he just needed to listen to the Director.

"But if you ask me, we should go tomorrow. We'll go during the day, and we'll be back by the afternoon or evening at the latest."

Out of safety considerations, Officer Li still advised Director Gu Sanding not to go overnight.

The road conditions are clearer during the day, which is more or less safer than at night.

"Alright, then we'll go tomorrow during the day."

Director Gu Sanding nodded and didn't say anything more.

The night passed in the blink of an eye. Early the next morning, Director Gu Sanding took Xueni, Officer Li, and Officer Zhao, and they got into the car.

They headed toward the Chenguang Orphanage in the Old District.

Looking at the somewhat gloomy sky, Officer Li unconsciously sped up.

"It looks like it's going to rain today..."

Director Gu Sanding rubbed his knees; his old rheumatism was still very accurate.

"The weather forecast says there will be a heavy rainstorm and advises citizens to avoid going out as much as possible."

"How did I forget about that?"

Officer Li sighed; if he had known, he would have waited another day.

"That won't do. Tomorrow, Chen Mo starts the Provincial Joint Examination, and I promised him I'd watch the live stream the whole way through."

"And the children, they are also looking forward to Brother Mo's performance."

Director Gu Sanding chuckled, quite looking forward to Chen Mo's performance in the Provincial Joint Examination.

"Director Gu, that makes sense."

Officer Li nodded in agreement.

"The new Orphanage's supporting facilities aren't quite perfect yet, mainly because there's no entertainment equipment."

"It will be much better once we move the television over."

"By the way, Director Gu, you don't need to lift a finger later. Officer Zhao and I will handle moving the things for you."

Whether it was out of respect for the higher-ups' intentions, Chen Mo's reputation, or the achievement of Director Gu Sanding raising so many children all by himself, both Officer Li and Officer Zhao respected him quite a lot.

"Then thank you both."

For so many years, this was the first time someone had respected Director Gu Sanding so much.

All of this was brought about by that child who made him the proudest...

Seeing the sky growing darker and darker, the dark clouds in the sky pressed down as if they were about to fall onto the earth.

The rain poured down in torrents. Even with the windshield wipers at full power, it was still impossible to see the road conditions clearly.

One could only vaguely see the blurry taillights.

Fortunately, Officer Li's driving skills were quite good. Plus, being a Rank 3 Martial Artist, both his reflexes and five senses were quite sharp, which allowed them to return to the Chenguang Orphanage in the Old District without incident.

"Quick, quick, let's go inside to take shelter from the rain."

Officer Li held up an umbrella, shielding Director Gu Sanding and Xueni under it.

The four of them quickly rushed into the Orphanage, avoiding being drenched by the downpour on the street.

"Oh, I'm really sorry..."

Director Gu Sanding looked at the vast curtain of rain outside and said somewhat embarrassedly.

"It's fine, it rains every year at this time."

"It's just not very common for it to be this heavy."

Officer Li took off his jacket, wrung out the water, and hung it on a rack nearby.

"This rain probably won't stop for a while. There are still old quilts in the Orphanage; let's rest for a bit."

Under Director Gu Sanding's repeated urging, Officer Li and Officer Zhao finally let the two go to the warehouse to get the old quilts.

As Rank 3 Martial Artists, getting caught in the rain wouldn't make them catch a cold or get sick.

But this was the old man's kind intention, so they couldn't refuse.

"Director Gu is a good man."

Officer Li, looking at the rain curtain outside that showed no sign of stopping, said to Officer Zhao beside him.

"Yes, raising so many children all by himself..."

Officer Zhao looked back at the figures of Director Gu Sanding and Xueni, nodding with some admiration.

"In my opinion... that little girl must have albinism, right?"

"And the other children, they all have some issues to varying degrees, otherwise their parents wouldn't have abandoned them."

"They are really irresponsible. Don't let me catch those bastards; I'll definitely give those bastards who abandoned their children a good talking-to."

Officer Zhao himself was also a father. Thinking about the suffering these children had endured in the past, he felt particularly unsettled.

Time ticked away, and this heavy rain showed no sign of stopping from noon until the next morning.

The sky remained pitch black, and the rain covered the entire Luo City like a curtain.

Fortunately, Luo City's drainage system was quite effective, otherwise it would have been flooded long ago.

Feeling quite bored, Officer Li connected the television to power and used his phone to cast the live stream of the Provincial Joint Examination, which was currently in the warm-up phase, onto the television.

"Mobile phones are really convenient..."

Director Gu Sanding couldn't help but marvel at the convenience of modern technology; this was much more convenient than cable television.

"Xueni, I'll buy you a phone later too. By then, you can manage the Orphanage's accounts."

"You've always wanted to be Brother Mo's housekeeper, right? Start practicing with the Orphanage's accounts first."

Director Gu Sanding's words made Xueni blush furiously, and she nodded shyly.

Xueni was already deathly pale because of her albinism, and with this blush, her entire face turned blood-red.

"Director Gu, stop teasing the little girl. The live stream has started!"

Officer Li was a bit excited; the Provincial Joint Examination was always quite spectacular every year.

After all, it was a gathering of geniuses from all over Henan Province, and the competition between geniuses was always the most spectacular.

"Chen Mo, where is Chen Mo?"

Director Gu Sanding no longer cared about teasing Xueni and quickly leaned in toward the television to search for traces of Chen Mo.

"Wait a second, let me check..."

Officer Li squinted his eyes as he searched for Chen Mo's name in the team assignments, eventually finding it in team number 12.

"Director Gu, Chen Mo is on team 12, and his teammates seem... quite good!"
