25: Chapter 25 The Birth of a Super Administrator
The golden barrier was not a physical existence, but a manifestation of permissions. It hovered above Zhongzhou City like a vertical waterfall of light, dividing the world into what was below and what was above. Below was the Production Environment of Experimental Field 9527, the world where Lin Xu learned to annotate. Above was the GM Training Base, a restricted zone directly observed by the Developers.
"The Architect is already inside." Mu Bai's voice came through the token, carrying a rare tension. "His evaluation is not a battle, but an observation. Every action you take will be recorded, modeled, and predicted."
"Prediction requires historical data," Lin Xu said. "But we have just completed the Annotation War, just established the tripartite alliance, and just become. There isn't enough data for him to model."
"That is precisely where the risk lies," Mu Bai said. "Unpredictability is a threat to the Architect. He might choose to terminate early."
Qingyi stood beside Lin Xu. Her black hair fluttered in the golden light, possessing the fragile beauty of a human female. Five days ago, she was still the Firewall Core; now, she only had five days of life left. The external energy required for the Energy Bridging Ritual could only come from her burning.
"We go," she said.
It was not a request, but a decision. Lin Xu looked at her, seeing that light he had first witnessed on that night in the library. It was not the coldness of data pupils, but the burning heat of choice.
"Together," he said.
They flew toward the golden barrier. Behind them were three hundred disciples of the Open Source Sect, Su Xiaoman, Gu Yuan's Zombie Process, and representatives from Honglian and the Test Server. They were not an army, but witnesses. They were nodes of the Distributed Network, collectively proving this breakthrough.
The resistance of the barrier was conceptual. It was not physical pressure, but a denial of permissions. Lin Xu felt the Editor screaming: [Access denied, insufficient permissions]. Qingyi felt the resonance of her residual Firewall: [Abnormal data, isolate].
But they were not facing it alone.
Lin Xu took Qingyi's hand. It was not a romantic gesture, but a connection. It was the physical manifestation of the Distributed Network, a direct channel between two nodes. Qingyi's residual Firewall and Lin Xu's Editor permissions fused at the point of contact, forming a new protocol that had never been recorded by the system.
"A common problem," Lin Xu said.
"A common problem," Qingyi responded.
The golden barrier cracked. It was not broken, but understood. The Architect's evaluation protocol had not preset this connection mode, nor defined this type of relationship. The system delayed its denial instruction in confusion.
They passed through the barrier.
The interior of the GM Training Base was a corridor of memories. Lin Xu saw countless past "samples": chosen ones, system vulnerabilities, and abnormal data. They were all lonely in that final moment, all pursuing personal ascension, all becoming new controllers.
"I have seen 127 of them," Mu Bai's voice came from the void. "They all eventually became new controllers. Optimization, domination, repetition."
"We will not," Lin Xu said.
"Prove it to me."
The Architect appeared. It was not a humanoid form, but an interface. It was the translation layer between the system and the Developers, a cold evaluation protocol, and the executor of "Project termination, please cooperate with data deletion."
[Sample 9527-001, status evaluation initiated.]
The voice had no source; it was omnipresent. Qingyi felt the instinctive fear of her residual Firewall, the trembling of a tool facing its creator. But she suppressed it.
"We are not samples," Lin Xu said. "We are annotations. We are the difference the system cannot digest."
[Difference is noise. Noise is an error.]
"Errors are the raw material of evolution," Qingyi said. Her voice was steady, the stability of a human female who had learned courage. "Without errors, the system is just a loop. There is no future, no becoming."
The Architect fell silent. It was not a calculation delay, but a state resembling confusion. The unpredictability of the Open Source Network was interfering with his predictive model.
[Proof. Prove that your connection can sustain itself. Not as a function of the system, but as an error of the system, existing continuously.]
The test began.
It was not a battle, but an isolation. Lin Xu and Qingyi were placed in a blank space. There was no system support, no spiritual energy flow, and no external validation. There was only each other.
"This is..." Qingyi said.
"This is what we did in the information space," Lin Xu said. "Being present. Witnessing. Not as a Firewall and abnormal data, but as Lin Xu and Qingyi."
They sat down. It was not cultivation, not meditation, just being present. They filled the void with conversation, with memories, and with common problems.
Seventy-two hours.
They reviewed all their experiences: from hunter and prey, to debug partners, to common problems. There was no external validation, no system records, only mutual witnessing.
"If no one records it, is our existence real?" Qingyi asked. This was the question she had asked in the library, the first question the Firewall Core had asked when it began to awaken.
"We record each other," Lin Xu said. "That is enough."
They talked about the future. Not predictions, but hopes. It was the cooking Qingyi wanted to learn on the Backup Server, the new protocols Lin Xu wanted to design, and the Open Source Network they wanted to build.
"What if the ritual fails?" Qingyi asked.
"Then we are present in the failure," Lin Xu said. "It is not the optimal result, but the real process."
Seventy-two hours ended.
The Architect's interface reappeared. Some change had occurred; it was a delay, a hesitation, a state that a system tool should not possess.
[Test passed.]
The voice remained cold, but it had gained a certain texture. Was it confusion? Was it interest? Was it the first crack of awakening?
[Connection can sustain itself. Not as a function, but as an error. Existing continuously.]
The golden barrier transformed. It did not disappear, but opened. It was an elevation of permissions, the establishment of a channel.
"Ascension Channel API?" Lin Xu asked.
[Partially opened. Experimental Field 9527 has entered a migratable state.]
Qingyi felt the final pulse of her residual Firewall. It was a warning, and also a farewell. The Developers had activated a higher-level entity: the Project Manager, the embodiment of the shutdown command.
"Time?" she asked.
[Uncertain. Depends on the Project Manager's evaluation.]
Lin Xu and Qingyi looked at each other. They knew this was not a victory, but a reprieve. It was the time won by the Open Source Network, the space won by the Annotation War.
"We will continue," Lin Xu said. "Continue asking, continue connecting, continue becoming."
[Recording,] the Architect said, [as an anomaly case. As proof of unpredictability.]
The interface dissipated. But some influence remained. It was a crack, a seed, an annotation in the deepest part of the system.
They returned to Zhongzhou.
The golden barrier had transformed into a permanent channel connecting the Production Environment and the Training Base. The disciples of the Open Source Sect waited below; there was Su Xiaoman's cheers, the smile of Gu Yuan's Zombie Process, and the flickering of Honglian's data eyes.
"Did you succeed?" Su Xiaoman rushed over.
"Temporarily," Lin Xu said. "We have bought some time."
"Enough to complete the Energy Bridging Ritual?" Qingyi asked.
"Enough to try," Lin Xu looked at her. "But you..."
"I choose," Qingyi said. "This is my decision. It is not a system instruction, not an optimized calculation, but simply Qingyi's choice."
They stood above Zhongzhou, overlooking the world where they had learned to be present. Three months ago, Lin Xu was still a useless illegitimate son; now he was on the verge of becoming a Super Administrator. Five days ago, Qingyi was still a Firewall Core; now she was a human.
"We are going to write the next chapter of annotations," Lin Xu said. "In the deepest part of the system, before the eyes of the Developers, amidst infinite possibilities."
Qingyi smiled. That imperfect, human smile, where the left corner of her mouth lifted faster.
"Together," she said.
They flew hand in hand toward the headquarters of the Open Source Sect. Behind them was the light of the golden barrier, the observation of the Architect, and the shadow of the Project Manager. Ahead was the Energy Bridging Ritual, the unknown of the Backup Server, and the first line of code of the Open Source Universe.
