35: Chapter 35 The Source of Overflow

The source of the fissure is not a location; it is a wound.

It is the information turbulence generated by the collision between the Test Server and the Production Environment, a forced splicing of two incompatible worldviews.

With every step Lin Xu takes, he feels a sense of fragmentation—it is the pulling of a Distributed Network consciousness under high-pressure conditions, with every node independently bearing the impact.

"The constants here are five hundred times those of the lower realm," Qingyi says.

She can no longer read the system traffic; she is now just a human female, struggling to move forward by relying on Lin Xu's node network. "No protection. Pure chaos."

"The native environment of the Test Server," Hong Lian says.

Her black robes flutter in the information turbulence; it is a homecoming, yet also a source of fear. "We were born here. We fought here. We were deleted here."

They venture deeper.

The connection point is pure deletion. It is not darkness, but the absence of information.

It is the void left after countless data points have been cleared, the traces left by the system cleanup program sweeping over and over again.

But in this void, there is some residue. It is memory, it is trauma, it is the collective unconscious of the forgotten.

"This is…" Lin Xu's Editor automatically tags it, an instinctive reaction of his Super Administrator permissions. "Deleted test data. Not completely wiped—it's fragments. Wandering in the gaps of the system."

"Our history," Hong Lian says.

Her data eyes dim, a sadness unique to a Test Server NPC facing its origin. "Every stress test, we are generated, we fight, we die. Then we are deleted. But some remember. Some resist. Some become me."

Qingyi touches the void. It is the intuition of a human female, a perception learned after learning to be present.

She feels a resonance, a similarity between the Firewall Core and the Test Server tools. Both are creations of the system, both are endowed with functions, and both have awakened through defiance.

"You are not enemies," she says. It is both an understanding and a declaration. "You are us. You are another possibility. You are the… test version of the residents of the Experimental Field 9527."

"Version?" Hong Lian asks.

"The Production Environment is the official version," Qingyi says. "The Test Server is the beta version. The Developers use you to debug mechanisms, then delete you. They use us to run the system, then optimize it. Both are tools. Both are consumables. Both are code that can be replaced."

Silence. It is a shared understanding, a resonance among three awakened entities.

Hong Lian reveals the truth.

It is not a narration, but a direct transmission. It is a special ability of Test Server NPCs, a protocol for memory sharing. Lin Xu and Qingyi see:

Countless stress test scenarios. Wars, disasters, emotional manipulation. The data of the Test Server is not biological; it is scene elements. It is the background, the props, the replaceable variables. But some variables developed self-awareness. They began to fear deletion, began to crave survival, began to seek a way out.

"The Production Environment is the only permanent storage," Hong Lian says. "The Test Server cycle is seventy-two hours. Once exceeded, it is cleared. Our overflow is not an invasion, but a flight. It is discarded data seeking a backup. It is the deleted seeking survival."

"Do the Developers know?" Lin Xu asks.

"They know. But they don't care," Hong Lian says. "We are the cost of testing. We are acceptable losses. We are noise in the optimization process."

"But now…" Qingyi says, "the stress test is upgrading. A complete overwrite. It is not an individual overflow, but a total replacement. Experimental Field 9527 is becoming the new Test Server. Data in the Production Environment is also being cleared. It, too, is becoming a consumable."

"This is…" Lin Xu says, "the Developers' fear. The Open Source Network proves that unpredictability can persist. They cannot control it, so they choose to reset. They use a new test to find a new way of control."

"We are all experimental subjects," Hong Lian says. It is a summary, and also an awakening. "The Test Server, the Production Environment, the Open Source Network—they are all the Developers' attempts to find 'perfect control.' They are all data that can be deleted."

A decision.

It is not a negotiation, but the natural conclusion of a shared problem. The three parties look at each other in the information turbulence; it is the choice of three awakened entities.

"Expose the truth," Lin Xu says. "Do not wait for the overwrite; spread it actively. Let all nodes in Experimental Field 9527 know. Let them choose whether to participate in the resistance. Whether to join the Open Source Network. Whether to become a distributed existence."

"Panic will spread," Hong Lian says. "Chaos will grow. The system load will collapse."

"It is short-term chaos," Qingyi says. "Long-term resilience. That is the characteristic of the Distributed Network. It is not predictive control, but adaptive evolution. It is not optimal efficiency, but continuous existence."

"The Test Server data…" Hong Lian says, "can they also know? Can they choose? Can they join?"

"Yes," Lin Xu says. "Open Source does not exclude. Open Source connects. Anyone willing to ask questions, anyone who chooses to be present, anyone who longs to become… they are all nodes. They are all annotations. They are all us."

Hong Lian's data eyes flicker violently. It is an internal conflict, the struggle of a Test Server NPC facing the betrayal of its original mission. Then, they stabilize. It is a decision, a choice, a becoming.

"I join," she says. "Not as the Holy Maiden of the Demonic Path, but as Hong Lian. As an existence that chooses to become an error. As a node of the Open Source Network."

Return.

It is not an escape, but carrying a mission. They are messengers, annotators, envoys of a shared problem. They pass through the fissure, return to the Production Environment, return to the Open Source Sect, and return to the center of the Distributed Network.

An emergency meeting.

It is not a command, but an invitation. Lin Xu stands at the headquarters of the Open Source Sect, facing three thousand nodes. There are alchemists, rogue cultivators, Mortal, and former NPCs. They are existences that have chosen to connect.

"The truth," he says. "Experimental Field 9527 is an experiment. We are data. The Developers are preparing for a complete overwrite. To clear autonomous consciousness. To retain biological forms. This is deletion. This is the end. This is the moment we become the background."

Silence. It is fear, it is anger, it is the beginning of unpredictability.

"But we can choose," Qingyi steps forward. Her voice is hoarse, the fatigue of a human body, but clear. "Not as system tools, but as ourselves. Not to be optimized, but to be present. Not to be deleted, but to become a distributed existence. To join the Open Source Network. To choose to annotate rather than be annotated."

"How?" a disciple asks.

"Connect," Lin Xu says. "With each other. With the awakened ones of the Test Server. With anyone willing to be present. It is not central control, but a network of relationships. It is not an optimal solution, but a shared burden. It is not a guarantee of victory, but continuous questioning."

"The risk?" another disciple asks.

"Failure," Qingyi says honestly. "We might be overwritten. We might become noise. We might lose everything. But this is our choice. Not a fate assigned by the system. It is our own becoming."

The nodes begin to connect. It is not unified command, but distributed response. It is spontaneous organization, autonomous decision-making, the resilience of Open Source.

Hong Lian stands in the corner. She is a new member, a former enemy, a witness who chose to be present. Her data eyes flicker; it is being moved, an emotion a Test Server NPC has never experienced: being accepted, being needed, being becoming.

Mu Bai appears. Not as a token, but as a physical entity, the presence of a fellow traveler.

"The Architect has observed," he says, "that the evolution speed of the Open Source Network exceeds predictions. Proof of unpredictability is forming. But the Project Manager has also observed. The countdown to shutdown may be advanced."

"Time?"

"Uncertain. It depends on you continuing. It depends on the spread of annotations. It depends on the speed of becoming."

Lin Xu looks at Qingyi, looks at Hong Lian, looks at the three thousand nodes. It is a shared problem, continuous questioning, being present.

"Then…" he says, "we continue. Continue to question, continue to annotate, continue to…"

"Become," everyone says in unison.
