28: Chapter 28 Debug Partner

The third lesson is exploration.

The instructor announced the mission: investigate abnormal data fluctuations on the periphery of the Training Base's forbidden zone.

The standard protocol is remote scanning to avoid direct contact.

But Lin Xu noticed a loophole in the mission description: the specific scope of the "periphery" was not defined.

"We can get closer," he said.

"Dangerous." Qingyi's remaining Firewall caught the data density of the forbidden zone, a level sufficient to evaporate ordinary cultivators, "But my residual permissions can mask some monitoring. A fifteen-minute window."

They broke away from the group and headed deep into the forbidden zone.

7749 tried to follow, but was stopped by Lin Xu.

It wasn't rejection; it was protection.

The seed of awakening should not be exposed too early.

The boundary of the forbidden zone was a visual distortion.

It was not a physical barrier, but a manifestation of permissions.

Lin Xu saw golden runes flowing in the air; it was the system's highest level of encryption.

"Gu Yuan was once here," Qingyi suddenly said.

Her data glimmer flickered violently, a resonance of her residual Firewall, "My tracking records show: he was the first-generation GM, the first to refuse cooperation, and the first to choose the state of a Zombie Process."

Lin Xu stopped in his tracks.

Gu Yuan, his mentor, the source of his legacy.

A thousand years ago, he was right here, in this forbidden zone.

"Why did he refuse?" he asked.

"The records were cleared," Qingyi said, "But residual data shows: he discovered some kind of truth. About the Developers, about the ultimate purpose of the Experimental Field. He chose not to be rewritten, choosing to remain stuck in memory as a Zombie Process, waiting for someone destined."

"Waiting for me," Lin Xu said.

It wasn't narcissism; it was responsibility.

It was the weight of a legacy, the continuation of comments.

They found the entrance.

It wasn't a door; it was a vulnerability.

It was a gap in the periodic maintenance window, a timing error designed by an intern.

Qingyi's residual permissions were just enough to cover it.

"You go in first," Qingyi said, "I will mask the alarm. But when the window closes, I must withdraw, otherwise I will be locked."

"We go together," Lin Xu said.

"No." Qingyi's voice carried a sense of resolve, the resolve of a human female who had learned to sacrifice, "If I am locked, the Energy Bridging Ritual will fail. You must leave with Gu Yuan's truth. Continue the comments."

Lin Xu looked at her.

Five days.

She only had five days left.

Now she wanted to use fifteen minutes of those five days to trade for his safety.

"Is this a calculation?" he asked, "Optimal resource allocation?"

"This is a choice," Qingyi said, "My choice. Not a directive from the Firewall, but Qingyi's decision."

They entered the forbidden zone.

The interior was a graveyard of history.

Not a physical space, but an accumulation of information.

Records of countless failed GMs: those who were rewritten, deleted, forgotten.

Their final moments were saved—a system error, an oversight by the cleanup program.

Lin Xu saw Gu Yuan.

Not a complete image, but fragments.

An afterimage of a Zombie Process, fragments of consciousness stuck in memory.

He was typing code, facing the void, facing a screen that did not exist.

"You have come," Gu Yuan's afterimage said.

Not a conversation, but the playback of a recording, a preset trigger, "If you are hearing this, it means my wait was successful. You are the one destined."

Lin Xu knelt.

Not out of respect, but presence.

It was the posture of facing a legacy.

"The truth of the Experimental Field," Gu Yuan's afterimage continued, "The Developers are not creators; they are maintainers. They are looking for something. A kind of unpredictable existence that emerges from control. They test various mechanisms in order to replicate it, to mass-produce it."

"Child of Destiny," Lin Xu said.

"They are failures," Gu Yuan's afterimage said, "127 Children of Destiny, 127 optimization paths, all became new controllers. They didn't find what they wanted. Until you."

"Me?"

"Open Source Network. Distributed existence. Unpredictable evolution."

Gu Yuan's afterimage changed for the first time—was it a reaction outside the recording? Was it a true remnant of the Zombie Process? "You are not their goal; you are their accident. You are the evidence that proves their incompleteness."

Qingyi's alarm sounded in Lin Xu's consciousness.

The window was about to close.

Her residual permissions were decaying.

"And..." Gu Yuan's afterimage said, "The complete coordinates of the Ascension Channel. They are in my core fragments. But to extract them requires Super Administrator permissions. You are not enough right now."

"How can I improve?"

"Become something that is needed. Not something that is optimized. Let the connection choose you, instead of you choosing the connection. This is the paradox of open source."

Gu Yuan's afterimage began to dissipate.

The window closed.

Qingyi did not withdraw.

Her data glimmer flickered violently in the forbidden zone, the ultimate alarm of the Firewall, the signal that the system was locking her down.

But she stood in front of Lin Xu, a posture of protection, a posture of defiance.

"You..." Lin Xu said.

"I defied it," Qingyi said.

Her voice carried pain, the physical manifestation of system punishment, "The directive was to withdraw. I chose to stay. This is..."

"This is..."

"This is me," Qingyi said, "Not the Firewall, not abnormal data, but Qingyi. The Qingyi who chooses to be present."

The system lock was complete.

Her residual permissions dropped to zero.

The preparation for the Energy Bridging Ritual was damaged.

Five days might become even shorter.

But they were together.

In the forbidden zone, before Gu Yuan's afterimage, in the graveyard of history.

They waited.

Not cultivation, not planning, just presence.

It was the oldest technique Lin Xu had learned, the human ability Qingyi had just grasped.

"Why stay?" Lin Xu asked.

Not a reproach, but understanding.

A question between debug partners.

"Because you were inside," Qingyi said, "Because Gu Yuan's truth needed a witness. Because..."

She paused.

The hesitation of a human female, the language search during emotional expression.

"Because I don't want to be alone," she said, "Even if locked, even if dying, I want to be present. With you."

Lin Xu held her hand.

Not a connection, but presence.

The physical manifestation of a Distributed Network, the overlap of two shared problems.

"We will get out," he said, "Not the optimal path, but the open source one. It is trial, error, and continuation."

"I believe," Qingyi said.

This was the first time she had said this word.

Not a confirmation after system verification, but human-style trust, a choice made after vulnerability.

The lockdown of the forbidden zone continued.

But a certain change occurred.

It was Qingyi's defiance, Lin Xu's presence, the final pulse of Gu Yuan's afterimage.

The system experienced a delay—confusion, an input that could not be modeled.

They utilized this delay.

Not an attack, but a negotiation.

Lin Xu used the Editor to mark his position—not to request release, but to declare his presence.

Qingyi used her final human voice to recount her choice—not as an excuse, but as a witness.

The system responded.

Not a release, but a transformation.

Redefining the lock, re-encoding the punishment.

Qingyi's damaged permissions were recorded as a sacrifice—a value the system had not yet understood.

They walked out of the forbidden zone.

Not a victory, but a continuation.

Not an answer, but a better question.

Qingyi's five days might become three.

But her defiance, her choice, her presence had already become a comment.

It was a record in the deepest part of the system, evidence the Developers could not predict.

Debug partners, formally formed.

Not as a function, but as a shared problem.

Not as an answer, but as a continuous question.
