Chapter 180: BETRAYAL! MILLIE KILLED HER
Chapter 180: BETRAYAL! MILLIE KILLED HER"Daemons, daemons, daemons." Aristia chanted, flipping through a book. She was cuddled up on the window seat that was actually a chaise lounge in front of a large window, very much like the one in S*fia The First.
All around her, books were strewn haphazardly. They were mainly books about daemons. The others were about aura.
Millie was lying beside her with her eyes closed as if she were asleep, but Aristia knew she wasn’t.
There were three books in particular out of the five she had gotten from the library the previous night that were stacked on top of each other. These books were specifically about daemons.
She had read the three books, was currently reading one, and the remaining book that she hadn’t read was lying beside her.
With a sigh, Aristia closed the book in her hand and put it on top of the pile.
"No." She groaned. It’s all saying the same thing!"
She hadn’t found much information about daemons apart from what she already knew. The books talked about how rare daemons were and about the special connection between master and daemon, as they were formed from the aura.
Her eyes fell on the last remaining book; the largest among the five.
Because it was the largest in the pile, it was placed at the bottom.
The light from the setting sun shone lightly into the room, illuminating the room with a slightly reddish-orange hue.
Aristia picked up the book, her eyes falling on the faint diagram on the cover.
Her fingers lightly grazed the diagram of beasts, stopping at the engraved words; ’Tale Of The Blessed Beasts’. She traced the engraving on the book.
She opened the book and began to read the words off the page. The information the book provided was a lot clearer compared to the other books.
She turned to the first page.
"Hmm."
A soft paw landed on the page, blocking the text.
Aristia slowly trailed her gaze from the paw, seeing Millie that had been lying with her eyes closed now looking up at her.
"Mm?" She asked confused.
[Wait...]
"You want me to read aloud?" She asked.
To her surprise, Millie nodded.
"Oh... okay." Aristia cleared her throat and got over her surprise.
"Long before Amberale was formed, Great King Fabian Amberale had heroically saved the mighty Lord Nerin Von Cali courageously. Okay... I know this."
Nevertheless, she continued, "Lord Nerin blessed him with abundance and prosperity, also giving him and his loyal companions Aura and a special beast— one we all know as a daemon. The daemons took on forms of different animals but possessed far greater strength and abilities than an animal. They possessed abilities that even animals did not..."
She turned the page. Millie seemed to be listening attentively.
Aristia read on. She hadn’t found any mention of daemons possessing the ability to change forms.
According to the book, the daemons were manifested from aura. They could be said to be a fraction of a person’s life source and were a part of a person. They felt the emotions of their master and felt whatever the master felt physically and emotionally. It was also the same for their master.
Daemons were a part of their owner and were connected in soul. So, if their owner were to perish, the daemons would also perish.
However, if a daemon perished before its owner, the owner would not die and would only enter a state of weakness. The reason was because the daemon was a part of the owner’s soul. A fraction being cut out would not greatly affect the life of the owner, however, if the main soul is cut out as a result of death, the fraction of the soul which was the daemon, would also be affected greatly and cause the death of the daemon.
Aristia continued until she reached a page that contained the information she was more curious about.
She noticed that the book referred to the daemon owners as ’he’, probably because it was always males who manifested daemons.
"Even though Lord Nerin had graciously gifted the king and his companions with the beasts, he kept them chained, not wanting the power of the daemons to be abused by humans. Only by breaking the chains could a daemon owner communicate with his daemon and strengthen their bond. A daemon owner would perish if he failed in his quest to break the chains. However, even though difficult to break the chains, most succeeded in partially breaking the chains..."
[Partially breaking the chains? Is there such a thing?] Her brows shot up in surprise and she looked at Millie.
Her eyes returned to the words written in the book.
Many daemon owners stopped at the partial breaking, that meant they only broke the chains partially, not completing it. This was because there was a high risk of not completing the process which would inevitably lead to death.
Once a person started the process, he had to complete it. When they moved to fully unlock it and failed, therefore not completing the process, they died. There was a high chance of failure which was why many decided to stop at the partial breaking, not wanting to take the risk.
It was a secret that many people wanted to avoid death. Knowing that they could die if they insisted on fully breaking the chains, they preferred to settle for breaking them partially.
Of course, King Fabian had succeeded in breaking the chains, along with his companions, the first heads of the first nobility— the original twelve nobles— of Amberale.
But now, in the whole kingdom, only her father, the king, Duke Anton, Duke Winston and Marquis Oswalt had fully broken the chains. That was what Captain Hugh Lancelot had told her.
[Woah! It’s really serious.] A dry chuckle left Aristia’s lips.
The book explained that it was mainly the pure nobles, as descendants of the first nobility in Amberale blessed by Lord Nerin, that manifested daemons.
Nobles belonging to the minor nobility also could manifest daemons.
Aristia had a guess that it was as a result of having the blood of those blessed by Lord Nerin because when children from pure nobility who couldn’t remain in the main branch formed side branches and joined minor nobility, they would still have the same blessed blood.
The side branches of the pure nobility would usually be given noble titles as a minor noble, allowing them to remain in nobility. Because they still possessed the same blood of pure nobility, it wouldn’t be impossible for them to manifest that blessing.
When they mingled with others in marriage to widen the family and continue their bloodline, this blood would continue to spread, even though dilluted. It wasn’t uncommon to even find commoners able to manifest daemons.
Aristia closed the book when she finished it, another sigh escaping her lips.
She put it aside, pulling Millie into her arms. The book hadn’t said much about how to break the chains or even how to see the chains in the first place.
She had to see the chains to break it, didn’t she? The question remained; How could she break something she couldn’t see?
But one thing she understood from Captain Hugh’s words and the book was that; breaking the chains was akin to defeating a daemon.
She had to fight a daemon and defeat it to be able to unlock its potential, fully or partially.
If she didn’t defeat the daemon, it would probably kill her which amounted to her dying if she didn’t ’break the chains’.
"Why couldn’t he just say that instead of giving me riddles and making me even more confused?" She scowled.
Now that she had decided the Captain’s words, she wasn’t too confused anymore. The problem now lay in feeling the spiritual connection.
[But wait... It’s actually Millie that might kill me?] Her jaw hung open. [No, I mean I knew that not unlocking the chains might kill me, so it was like Millie indirectly killed me. I just didn’t that Millie would be directly involved in killing me, like what the fudge?!]
Her gaze landed on Millie, and she put her hand on her chest dramatically, her eyes carrying a betrayed look. "You betrayed me..."
Millie just looked at her, confused and lazy.
Aristia sighed.
"Look, I’ve gotten grey hair already." She said, picking up a long strand of hair and bringing it in front of her eyes.
Her eyes squinted slightly and she chuckled with a shake of her head. "Nope, it’s just my natural grey hair."
Her own words made her snort uncontrollably.
"Oh, Millie. My sweet, adorable Millie." She cooed, hugging Millie tightly in her arms and swaying side to side.
She released Millie from her hold and stood up suddenly on the chaise lounge. "You know what? Sitting here brooding over this won’t change a thing!"
Her outburst seemed to surprise Millie. She sat up and looked up at Aristia curiously. Maybe her human had found a better solution to get an answer.
A look of determination flashed across Aristia’s eyes and she raised her fist, her face scrunched seriously.
The next moment,
"It’s time for dinner!"
Millie, "..."
She fell back on her belly.
"Come on," Aristia said, going to pick her up. "We can’t think of something on an empty stomach."
Millie’s eyes landed on an empty snack bowl beside Aristia’s feet on the chaise lounge. There had been snacks in it minutes ago...
